- 00:01 - 00:03
alone. Welcome to stem stories, Miss Ewing.
- 00:04 - 00:08
This is Episode six and our work on the brain.
- 00:09 - 00:11
And today we're gonna talk about something that's called soft
- 00:11 - 00:14
skills. Now, before we get started, I just want to
- 00:14 - 00:16
say that there are people that do not like term
- 00:16 - 00:18
calling himself skills, and we're not going to get into
- 00:19 - 00:19
the debate today.
- 00:20 - 00:23
But we're gonna talk about what they are and how
- 00:23 - 00:24
they affect you.
- 00:25 - 00:31
You know, having taught now for 13 someone years, being
- 00:31 - 00:32
up in the classroom or being in the classroom.
- 00:34 - 00:35
I know that I have a lot of expect expectations
- 00:36 - 00:39
for my students, and I expect the very best from.
- 00:41 - 00:44
And a big part of that is developing soft skills.
- 00:45 - 00:47
Now, sometimes I have students.
- 00:47 - 00:49
They're like, Why are you being so hard on us?
- 00:50 - 00:51
Why are you asking us to do things?
- 00:51 - 00:52
I don't know.
- 00:52 - 00:53
I don't want to do that.
- 00:54 - 00:57
Well, there's a reason behind everything that I do in
- 00:57 - 00:59
from the classroom, whether you understand it or not.
- 01:00 - 01:02
And I think this video is gonna help you understand
- 01:03 - 01:04
it a little bit better.
- 01:05 - 01:08
So there are two different things.
- 01:08 - 01:11
They're called hard skills in soft skills, and I might
- 01:11 - 01:12
explain the difference between the two.
- 01:13 - 01:17
Now, hard skills are those things that we can learn
- 01:17 - 01:17
in school.
- 01:19 - 01:20
Our math are arithmetic.
- 01:20 - 01:23
Are coding how to use equipment?
- 01:24 - 01:28
Um, these are the skills that we go to college
- 01:29 - 01:29
for. These other things.
- 01:29 - 01:30
We get training.
- 01:31 - 01:31
Excuse me.
- 01:32 - 01:34
These are the things we get degrees for these air,
- 01:35 - 01:38
the skills that we go out and go to get
- 01:38 - 01:42
jobs and say These are the skills that I have.
- 01:42 - 01:45
These are the things I've been trained to do these
- 01:45 - 01:46
air, the hard skills.
- 01:47 - 01:50
They're called hard skills because their candle, I can say
- 01:50 - 01:52
that I know how to type my name.
- 01:53 - 01:55
I know how to code a game.
- 01:56 - 01:58
Those are hard skills that I know I can sell
- 01:59 - 02:01
now you would think those are the most important skills.
- 02:03 - 02:09
No soft skills are a little bit different, and I'm
- 02:09 - 02:11
gonna explain which one's more important in just a little
- 02:11 - 02:17
bit. But soft skills can be defined as qualitative attributes
- 02:17 - 02:20
that provide hiring managers with a sneak peek oven.
- 02:21 - 02:27
Applicants have professional behavior, so it's qualitative, which means that
- 02:27 - 02:31
could see, or they can look at your behavior, basically
- 02:31 - 02:37
skills include adaptability, the ability to change communication and teamwork.
- 02:38 - 02:42
So how you're able to adapt a situation, how you
- 02:42 - 02:46
were able to communicate and talk with other people and
- 02:46 - 02:48
how well you work together as a team.
- 02:50 - 02:52
Remember those things that I have you guys do in
- 02:52 - 02:53
the front when I'm in the classroom?
- 02:55 - 03:00
Teamwork Contemplating technical skills Would soft skills increases your value?
- 03:01 - 03:06
So having these Theodore stability, communication and team or actually
- 03:06 - 03:11
makes your hard skills look 10 times more hirable and
- 03:11 - 03:15
a deficit meaning a low area of soft skills is
- 03:15 - 03:21
the number one reason workers lose their jobs so they
- 03:21 - 03:23
don't lose their jobs for not having the hard skills
- 03:24 - 03:28
actually lose jobs for not having their soft skills 94%.
- 03:30 - 03:32
That's all this area in the yellow of recruiters.
- 03:33 - 03:37
People that hire you believe that employees employees with a
- 03:37 - 03:41
stronger soft skill set has a better chance of getting
- 03:41 - 03:43
the job and getting promoted within that job.
- 03:44 - 03:48
Everybody applying for the job has similar hard skills, but
- 03:48 - 03:51
being able to show that you have soft skills not
- 03:51 - 03:54
only gives you a better chance of getting the job,
- 03:54 - 03:57
keeping the job and getting promoted at that job.
- 03:58 - 04:01
So what are the top 10 Soft skills communication?
- 04:02 - 04:05
How well you're able to actually have dialogue with people
- 04:05 - 04:08
that are your friends, but people that are not your
- 04:08 - 04:11
friends. So sometimes, like when I put you into teams
- 04:11 - 04:15
with people that you don't normally work with, I'm looking
- 04:15 - 04:18
to see how well you're able to communicate with those
- 04:18 - 04:21
people. I have said this in my class before.
- 04:22 - 04:24
If you're in a job and you don't get along
- 04:24 - 04:27
with other people at school, if you're on a team
- 04:27 - 04:29
and you're not getting along your team, a lot of
- 04:30 - 04:31
times a teacher will put you in another team or
- 04:32 - 04:33
let you work by yourself in a job.
- 04:34 - 04:36
If you're not getting along with someone and you go
- 04:36 - 04:38
to your boss and say, you know what, We don't
- 04:38 - 04:38
get along.
- 04:39 - 04:40
They're gonna let you go.
- 04:41 - 04:46
Not the team being self motivated, stepping up and being
- 04:46 - 04:46
like this.
- 04:47 - 04:49
Like with May, Mr Ewing, I've done What do I
- 04:49 - 04:49
do next?
- 04:50 - 04:51
What's next?
- 04:51 - 04:54
Not just I'm done and sitting back and not doing
- 04:54 - 04:56
the next steps are asking what the next steps are.
- 04:57 - 05:00
Be self motivated, be a leader, and that doesn't mean,
- 05:01 - 05:02
you've got to be the front of the line.
- 05:02 - 05:04
That doesn't mean you gotta lead the class.
- 05:04 - 05:07
The leader of yourself being responsible.
- 05:08 - 05:12
You know what being responsible also means taking, making good
- 05:13 - 05:15
choices. But it's also like if you made a bad
- 05:16 - 05:19
choice or you've done something, just take ownership of it,
- 05:19 - 05:21
be responsible for it.
- 05:21 - 05:23
Teamwork. I can't talk about teamwork enough.
- 05:24 - 05:26
That is one of the hardest skills to learn.
- 05:27 - 05:30
But it's one of the most important soft skill in
- 05:30 - 05:30
my eyes.
- 05:31 - 05:31
Be your problem.
- 05:32 - 05:34
So look at what you do have and what you
- 05:34 - 05:36
need to actually solve something.
- 05:37 - 05:42
Decisiveness, Make a decision and run with it, this one
- 05:43 - 05:44
being able to work under pressure.
- 05:44 - 05:47
If you know some things, do it three o'clock and
- 05:47 - 05:49
your wait until 2 45 to start your work.
- 05:51 - 05:55
You're not getting it done, and deadlines are super important.
- 05:56 - 05:59
They aren't usually held as important in school.
- 06:00 - 06:02
Not know him entry school, but they should be.
- 06:03 - 06:06
You need to be held to a deadline because in
- 06:06 - 06:07
the real world you don't hit your deadline.
- 06:08 - 06:12
You don't get paid nexus flexibility.
- 06:14 - 06:17
Be flexible if you're not getting the way you want
- 06:17 - 06:17
or you're not.
- 06:18 - 06:19
Your ideas aren't going the way you want.
- 06:20 - 06:22
Be flexible to understand that maybe someone's ideas.
- 06:23 - 06:26
They're just better in that situation and the other conflict
- 06:26 - 06:32
resolution. If there is a conflict, don't talk about it
- 06:32 - 06:33
in the heat of the moment.
- 06:33 - 06:36
Take a breather, but be willing to see the other
- 06:37 - 06:37
side of a conflict.
- 06:39 - 06:41
It always has two sides, not just your side and
- 06:41 - 06:41
their side.
- 06:42 - 06:44
And sometimes we got to step out of our own
- 06:45 - 06:47
side just to be able to hear and see that.
- 06:48 - 06:54
And that's why these same things clear communication, listening skills,
- 06:54 - 06:59
self control, positive attitude, assertiveness, empathy for your other teammates.
- 07:00 - 07:02
Yes, these are all skills that we should be building
- 07:03 - 07:03
in our classroom.
- 07:04 - 07:07
This is why I said the expectations so high with
- 07:07 - 07:10
my students is because I expect to see all of
- 07:10 - 07:14
this. And when I don't it's a problem because I'm
- 07:15 - 07:18
trying to make sure that you each one of you,
- 07:19 - 07:22
is set up for the most success that you can
- 07:22 - 07:23
possibly have.
- 07:23 - 07:26
And if you don't master, these doesn't matter how many
- 07:26 - 07:27
hard skills you have.
- 07:29 - 07:30
That's the biggest reason people are let go.
- 07:31 - 07:34
So Which one's more important after hearing that?
- 07:34 - 07:36
Which one do you think is more important?
- 07:40 - 07:41
This is the crazy part.
- 07:42 - 07:48
It's more important to hire for soft skills, have 30%
- 07:48 - 07:49
said soft skills.
- 07:50 - 07:53
A combination of soft skills and our schools skills is
- 07:54 - 07:58
62% and just hard skills is 8% bad hires, actually,
- 08:00 - 08:01
as how people lose their jobs.
- 08:02 - 08:03
We already talked about that graph.
- 08:04 - 08:09
So here's the difference between look at our heart skills.
- 08:09 - 08:12
Look at are soft skills, which ones are more important
- 08:12 - 08:14
and which one of each of those is more important
- 08:15 - 08:16
to you and your success.
- 08:17 - 08:19
So remember when I'm up in front of the classroom
- 08:19 - 08:21
or your teachers up in front of classroom and they're
- 08:21 - 08:25
asking you to develop those soft skills by giving you
- 08:25 - 08:26
assignments that's going to do it.
- 08:27 - 08:29
It isn't that we're trying to be mean or angry
- 08:30 - 08:30
or punish.
- 08:30 - 08:33
You were trying to make you a better student and
- 08:33 - 08:33
a better learner.
- 08:34 - 08:37
We're trying to help you develop your muscles as a
- 08:37 - 08:39
learner and developing those sauce
