Hello. My name is Sarah Kleiber and this is my
- 00:05 - 00:08
Y me video for my application to teach fifth grade
- 00:08 - 00:08
at Steel Elementary.
- 00:10 - 00:12
I would be an excellent higher because I've had a
- 00:12 - 00:16
wide range of experiences in education that have shaped shaped
- 00:16 - 00:16
me as an educator.
- 00:18 - 00:22
I started teaching in Evanston Illinois in the district that
- 00:22 - 00:22
I grew up in.
- 00:23 - 00:26
I taught second grade at Bessie Rose School, Global Studies
- 00:26 - 00:29
and it laid the foundation for my passion, passion and
- 00:29 - 00:30
teaching through a global lens.
- 00:32 - 00:33
Well, I loved second grade.
- 00:33 - 00:35
I was ready to travel and see the world.
- 00:35 - 00:39
I spent two years teaching fourth grade at country day
- 00:39 - 00:42
school in S Kazoo, Costa rica, living in a foreign
- 00:42 - 00:45
country and being immersed in a new culture and language
- 00:45 - 00:48
gave me a lot of perspective as a person and
- 00:48 - 00:48
a teacher.
- 00:49 - 00:51
My students came from all over the world and brought
- 00:51 - 00:52
so much insight into our learning.
- 00:54 - 00:56
We even got to visit volcanoes for science field trips.
- 00:58 - 01:00
When I came back to the United States, I taught
- 01:00 - 01:02
third grade at stem Launch K.
- 01:02 - 01:05
Eight. This is where I spent the past five years
- 01:05 - 01:05
as an educator.
- 01:06 - 01:09
I owe so much to this experience here.
- 01:09 - 01:12
I've been extremely involved in the community, from garden club
- 01:12 - 01:16
to bilingual club, have engaged students and families outside of
- 01:16 - 01:16
school hours.
- 01:18 - 01:20
It is here that I learned about problem based learning,
- 01:21 - 01:23
stem education and design thinking.
- 01:24 - 01:27
I discovered the power of the PBL process for all
- 01:27 - 01:32
learners investigating authentic community issues and designing solutions to present
- 01:33 - 01:34
to expert panels for feedback.
- 01:35 - 01:37
The level of engagement when students care about what they're
- 01:38 - 01:40
learning, when they see the immediate impact of their ideas
- 01:41 - 01:45
is what learning is all about at Stem Launch is
- 01:46 - 01:48
also where I became an E.
- 01:48 - 01:48
LD. Teacher.
- 01:50 - 01:53
I've spent most of my time with third grade co
- 01:53 - 01:56
planning and co teaching literacy lessons with our L.
- 01:56 - 01:57
D. Students needs in mind.
- 01:58 - 02:01
I believe one of my greatest strengths has been solidified
- 02:02 - 02:05
through this experience and that is collaborating with others.
- 02:06 - 02:11
Being in another teacher's classroom requires vulnerability and communication on
- 02:11 - 02:11
both ends.
- 02:12 - 02:15
I am able to be thoughtful and articulate, flexible and
- 02:15 - 02:16
adaptable in these situations.
- 02:18 - 02:20
And even after a crazy year and a half my
- 02:21 - 02:24
teammates still find me a calming presence.
- 02:28 - 02:32
Finally I am perpetually willing to grow and expand.
- 02:33 - 02:35
I seek feedback from my colleagues.
- 02:35 - 02:38
I'm willing to try new things and always ready for
- 02:38 - 02:40
the next professional development or book club.
- 02:40 - 02:42
I finished my Masters this year in C.
- 02:43 - 02:43
L. D.
- 02:43 - 02:45
E. And I loved every moment of it.
- 02:45 - 02:46
I love learning.
- 02:47 - 02:50
I'm always looking for a new challenge or experience to
- 02:50 - 02:52
shift my thinking and my teaching practice.
- 02:53 - 02:56
Being a lifelong learner is something that we must model
- 02:56 - 02:56
for our students.
- 02:58 - 03:01
Teaching 5th grade at steel elementary would be an amazing
- 03:02 - 03:04
opportunity for me to continue this growth.
- 03:05 - 03:07
Thinking about the capabilities and the developmental level of 5th
- 03:07 - 03:09
graders is very exciting to me.
- 03:09 - 03:12
I hope I have the opportunity to work with the
- 03:12 - 03:13
students and staff at Steel Elementary.
- 03:14 - 03:15
Thank you for this opportunity.
