everybody. This is Wayne Turmail from the Remote Leadership Institute,
- 00:04 - 00:06
and I want to talk about something that's going on
- 00:07 - 00:10
right now that not a lot of people want to
- 00:10 - 00:10
cop to.
- 00:10 - 00:11
But here it is.
- 00:12 - 00:16
During these Covad times, a lot of companies have changed
- 00:16 - 00:19
the way they do training in their organization, and there
- 00:19 - 00:22
isn't a lot of in person training in classroom stuff
- 00:23 - 00:23
going on.
- 00:23 - 00:26
And that's creating a bit of a crisis for people
- 00:27 - 00:28
who are good classroom trainers.
- 00:28 - 00:32
They're being asked to move to tools like Zoom and
- 00:33 - 00:37
some other things, and they're not really comfortable with that.
- 00:37 - 00:40
So I want to talk really honestly for a minute
- 00:40 - 00:46
about why good classroom trainers don't really like virtual facilitation
- 00:47 - 00:49
and how they can kind of get over it.
- 00:50 - 00:53
So let's start with why it's happening right if people
- 00:53 - 00:54
can't get together.
- 00:55 - 00:56
But we still need to train people.
- 00:57 - 00:57
We have to do something.
- 00:58 - 01:01
And you know the learning doesn't always get the job
- 01:02 - 01:05
done. And there's lots of reasons, right?
- 01:05 - 01:07
Virtual instructor led training.
- 01:07 - 01:11
Obviously, there's no travel, it's easy to do and it's
- 01:11 - 01:13
still a synchronous training event.
- 01:13 - 01:16
You get at least some of the interaction that we
- 01:16 - 01:22
get in a classroom because learning is social, its social
- 01:23 - 01:27
for the warders is social when you're interacting with the
- 01:27 - 01:31
instructor. And so there are a lot of good reasons
- 01:31 - 01:34
to move to virtual instructor led training.
- 01:35 - 01:35
Here's the problem.
- 01:36 - 01:37
We still hate it.
- 01:38 - 01:42
So why why do good classroom trainers not particularly like
- 01:43 - 01:44
virtual instructor led training?
- 01:45 - 01:47
Well, there's a bunch of reasons if we think about
- 01:47 - 01:49
why we like being in the classroom.
- 01:49 - 01:50
We love the interaction.
- 01:51 - 01:53
There's an energy that goes on.
- 01:54 - 01:54
There's an energy transfer.
- 01:56 - 01:59
You know, when you see the light bulb go on
- 01:59 - 02:01
for trainers, that's part of our motivation.
- 02:02 - 02:05
And by the way, it's fun for us.
- 02:06 - 02:08
Unlike most people who don't like to speak in public,
- 02:09 - 02:13
most classroom trainers we get an endorphin rush being at
- 02:13 - 02:16
the front of the room that we don't get when
- 02:16 - 02:17
we're sitting in front of a webcam.
- 02:18 - 02:21
And also, here's the other thing.
- 02:21 - 02:23
We feel really, really uncomfortable.
- 02:24 - 02:25
Why is that?
- 02:25 - 02:26
Well, let me give you this analogy.
- 02:29 - 02:31
You ever drive late at night in the pouring rain,
- 02:32 - 02:34
you're trying to find an address, and you have to
- 02:34 - 02:36
turn down the radio so you can see better.
- 02:38 - 02:42
That's what happens when we try to deliver training in
- 02:42 - 02:43
an online environment.
- 02:43 - 02:45
All the things that we do naturally.
- 02:46 - 02:51
Scanning the audience, checking for understanding, hearing their reaction, adjusting
- 02:52 - 02:53
to the mood in the room.
- 02:55 - 02:57
We still have to do all of that.
- 02:57 - 03:01
And, oh, by the way, we have to remember which
- 03:01 - 03:03
button to push and how do we make this work?
- 03:04 - 03:07
And Dad, we use the white board and it becomes
- 03:08 - 03:12
so much inside our skulls that we turn down the
- 03:12 - 03:15
radio so we can see better, and we wind up
- 03:15 - 03:18
not using a lot of the tools that help us
- 03:18 - 03:18
be successful.
- 03:19 - 03:20
So here's the thing.
- 03:21 - 03:23
Yeah, we don't like it and we gripe about it
- 03:23 - 03:24
and all of that.
- 03:28 - 03:31
But if you're already doing classroom training successfully, you have
- 03:32 - 03:33
what you need to succeed.
- 03:34 - 03:35
Now. What do I mean by this?
- 03:36 - 03:40
Well, you know what makes adult learning work right?
- 03:40 - 03:43
You need a good way to deliver content Prezi.
- 03:44 - 03:49
Or however you're delivering the course visuals allow you to
- 03:49 - 03:49
do that right?
- 03:50 - 03:50
You've already got that.
- 03:51 - 03:52
You've got the content experience.
- 03:52 - 03:55
You know what you're talking about and how to make
- 03:55 - 03:56
it relevant to your audience.
- 03:57 - 04:02
We know that interaction and social accountability is important, and
- 04:02 - 04:05
if you use your Web platform well, you can get
- 04:05 - 04:05
some of that.
- 04:06 - 04:10
You can get riel time discussion processing, and you can
- 04:10 - 04:12
keep your learners actively involved.
- 04:13 - 04:15
You already know how to do that part.
- 04:17 - 04:20
You need to make online facilitation work.
- 04:20 - 04:22
So what you need to do is ask yourself, What
- 04:23 - 04:25
would I do in an ideal learning environment?
- 04:27 - 04:29
And then what's the closest I can come to that?
- 04:29 - 04:32
So if you're using and I don't care what platform
- 04:32 - 04:37
it is, zoom WebEx, whatever it is you've got away
- 04:37 - 04:38
toe have people raise their hand.
- 04:39 - 04:40
You have a way to have them vote.
- 04:41 - 04:44
You have a way to engage them and get them
- 04:44 - 04:45
to answer questions.
- 04:45 - 04:51
And there's white boards and all kinds of tools, and
- 04:51 - 04:54
you can build it into the course where if you're
- 04:54 - 04:59
using president, for example, you can build the questions and
- 04:59 - 05:03
the pauses and the interaction into the presentation itself.
- 05:04 - 05:05
You can put it in the notes as a kind
- 05:06 - 05:10
of leaders guide to yourself, but the number one thing
- 05:10 - 05:13
that you need to do to make all of this
- 05:13 - 05:16
work is you need to practice, and it takes about
- 05:16 - 05:21
half a dozen times of using the tool in conjunction
- 05:21 - 05:25
with delivering the content for it to become muscle memory.
- 05:26 - 05:29
At which point, just like when you're driving, you can
- 05:29 - 05:30
drive with the radio.
- 05:31 - 05:34
You can push the button and listen for responses at
- 05:34 - 05:38
the same time, but you need to get over that
- 05:38 - 05:38
learning hump.
- 05:39 - 05:43
You need to practice and practice, by the way, is
- 05:43 - 05:45
not going through your presentation muttering yourself.
- 05:46 - 05:51
It means using the presentation tools in real time with
- 05:52 - 05:55
your content so that your brain in your body sink.
- 05:58 - 06:00
There are ways to get interaction.
- 06:00 - 06:02
We've all been on that call.
- 06:02 - 06:03
So who's got a question?
- 06:04 - 06:05
Nothing. Crickets, Tumbleweeds.
- 06:06 - 06:10
There are ways that you can help condition your audience
- 06:11 - 06:12
to be more responsive.
- 06:13 - 06:15
The first is to set expectations early.
- 06:16 - 06:18
This is how this is going to work.
- 06:18 - 06:22
Get them to push buttons and right in the chat
- 06:23 - 06:24
and speak up and contribute.
- 06:25 - 06:28
The earlier you get them involved, the easier it is
- 06:28 - 06:29
to keep them involved.
- 06:29 - 06:32
If they sit, pass him for 40 minutes and then
- 06:32 - 06:35
you expect them toe leap into action it's just not
- 06:36 - 06:36
going to work.
- 06:36 - 06:39
You also need to offer multiple ways to interact.
- 06:40 - 06:42
Not everybody is comfortable speaking up.
- 06:42 - 06:45
Some people are gonna want to use the chat feature,
- 06:45 - 06:50
for example, or they're gonna want to find different ways
- 06:50 - 06:50
to contribute.
- 06:51 - 06:54
Maybe, you know, they're working breakout groups, but they won't
- 06:54 - 06:58
necessarily speak up in a larger group.
- 07:00 - 07:00
We need to do that.
- 07:01 - 07:03
And so you need a questioning strategy.
- 07:04 - 07:07
And again, you can use your presentation tool, whatever it
- 07:07 - 07:13
is Prezi outlook, whatever to build those different types of
- 07:13 - 07:16
questions and seek those different types of responses.
- 07:17 - 07:21
So, yeah, we're not crazy about presenting online.
- 07:21 - 07:25
But what I have found in over 15 years is
- 07:25 - 07:32
that once people start tubes, think about the possibilities and
- 07:33 - 07:33
less about the constraint.
- 07:34 - 07:36
Our instincts will kick in.
- 07:36 - 07:39
Once you've learned the tool, you can relax and go
- 07:39 - 07:42
back to doing what you do, which is communicating your
- 07:42 - 07:45
knowledge and helping people learn, which is why we do
- 07:46 - 07:51
this. If you found this useful, that's great.
- 07:51 - 07:53
