Okay, so here's my new Prezi and I just wanted
- 00:04 - 00:05
to mention that I had made a Prezi about bears
- 00:06 - 00:09
before. But now I've taken the multimedia learning principles and
- 00:09 - 00:12
learning theories into it and made some changes.
- 00:13 - 00:15
I wanted to show you to share with you those
- 00:16 - 00:19
changes. So the first things I took into consideration was
- 00:20 - 00:22
the cognitive load theory and the signalling principle.
- 00:23 - 00:26
The cognitive load theory discusses how if you overload working
- 00:26 - 00:29
memory before there is time for encoding and long term
- 00:29 - 00:32
storage in mental models, things will be forgotten.
- 00:33 - 00:35
And the signalling principle to discuss is how people learn
- 00:35 - 00:39
better. Um when queues are added that highlight the information
- 00:40 - 00:41
as well as its organized.
- 00:42 - 00:46
So when I first made this uh Prezi I had
- 00:47 - 00:48
all the white themes come up.
- 00:48 - 00:51
But now you'll see that as I discuss what we're
- 00:51 - 00:54
going to be talking about, a white bubble comes up
- 00:54 - 00:55
on only the ones that I will be discussing.
- 00:57 - 00:59
So when I run through with the students, that will
- 00:59 - 01:01
be a quick little overview and then they will exactly
- 01:01 - 01:02
see what we're working on.
- 01:03 - 01:05
So it'll go back to then the beginning and then
- 01:06 - 01:08
here is where I will go into it more in
- 01:08 - 01:11
depth and then we can discuss further from there.
- 01:12 - 01:14
The next thing I took into consideration was the modality
- 01:15 - 01:18
principle, which explains that people learn better from graphics and
- 01:18 - 01:21
narration than graphics and printed text as well as the
- 01:21 - 01:22
redundancy principle.
- 01:22 - 01:25
Um so I didn't want to make things, I didn't
- 01:26 - 01:28
want to have to put the words and say the
- 01:28 - 01:31
words and have them written on there because it would
- 01:31 - 01:31
just become redundant.
- 01:32 - 01:36
Uh so what I did here um was make sure
- 01:36 - 01:39
that because I'll be speaking to it, I will have
- 01:39 - 01:40
only the images.
- 01:41 - 01:45
So if you see when you go through instead of
- 01:45 - 01:49
saying wonders, I put a bubble and instead of facts,
- 01:50 - 01:54
I have placed a checkbox instead of bear paws.
- 01:54 - 01:56
I have placed or types of bears.
- 01:56 - 01:59
I placed pots, etcetera, etcetera.
- 02:00 - 02:01
I didn't go and write the words because I'll be
- 02:01 - 02:03
saying those words as I go through.
- 02:04 - 02:09
Finally, I took into consideration the self explanation principle, which
- 02:09 - 02:12
explains how people learn better when they're encouraged to generate
- 02:12 - 02:14
self exploitations during learning.
- 02:14 - 02:17
So here I thought, okay, I didn't take much time
- 02:18 - 02:20
to allow the students to kind of have that team
- 02:21 - 02:22
talk or partner talk.
- 02:23 - 02:29
So in um, this section here I decided responds about
- 02:30 - 02:30
the types of bears.
- 02:31 - 02:33
So in that section there I chose that I would
- 02:34 - 02:37
stop and ask questions and have them turn to a
- 02:37 - 02:40
partner and talk about a bear they found interesting or
- 02:41 - 02:43
tell a friend about a bear that they learned about
- 02:44 - 02:45
and then have another discussion about what types of bears
- 02:46 - 02:47
might live in Canada and why they might think that.
- 02:48 - 02:49
So along the way, we were going to be taking
- 02:49 - 02:53
those stops and those pauses and giving them some time
- 02:53 - 02:54
to do some work in between.
- 02:55 - 02:59
Like I said before, this whole Prezi is built around
- 03:00 - 03:01
uh kind of guiding them through everything.
- 03:02 - 03:04
First we'll do a quick run over the Prezi and
- 03:04 - 03:05
then we'll use it in steps.
- 03:05 - 03:07
So first we will wonder that will be a day's
- 03:08 - 03:10
lesson. The next we will learn some facts and then
- 03:10 - 03:11
maybe they can go out and tell their friends and
- 03:12 - 03:13
our facts or read some books and learn some more
- 03:13 - 03:15
facts the next day they learn about types of bears
- 03:16 - 03:18
so on so far and this way it's not an
- 03:19 - 03:20
overload and they can do one thing at a time
- 03:21 - 03:23
and focus on that within the booklet that I have
- 03:24 - 03:24
provided as well.
- 03:25 - 03:28
So yeah, that's how I hope that my Prezi is
- 03:29 - 03:31
now better for learning.
- 03:31 - 03:34
And uh I hope you enjoy it.
- 03:34 - 03:36
If you'd like it, I can absolutely send it to
- 03:36 - 03:36
you.
