Hello everyone and welcome to my presentation.
- 00:04 - 00:08
Hi my name is Mina and this is my journey of how I discovered
- 00:08 - 00:11
my love for teaching and how I got to where I am today.
- 00:12 - 00:15
So a little bit about me. I am korean american.
- 00:15 - 00:21
I am a daughter of two korean immigrants who came to America to start a new life.
- 00:21 - 00:25
I went to elementary middle school and high school all
- 00:25 - 00:28
in the same neighborhood in the suburb of L.
- 00:28 - 00:31
A. Which had predominantly white and hispanic communities.
- 00:32 - 00:37
And although I had a good group of friends I felt alienated from my peers.
- 00:37 - 00:42
Um Just because I felt different from the rest of the school community.
- 00:43 - 00:46
But I remember specifically in elementary school I
- 00:46 - 00:47
had a teacher in the fourth grade.
- 00:47 - 00:50
Her name was Miss Lee who was korean just like me.
- 00:50 - 00:53
And I was so shocked that she knew my
- 00:53 - 00:56
heritage and where it's coming from because it wasn't really
- 00:56 - 00:59
common to see someone like me around and she
- 00:59 - 01:02
made me feel comfortable and accepted in the classroom.
- 01:02 - 01:05
And it was then when I thought that I wanted to become someone like her.
- 01:06 - 01:10
Someone who would be able to make other people feel welcomed in the classroom.
- 01:11 - 01:16
So like I said earlier I had always had this idea of becoming a teacher in
- 01:16 - 01:20
mind but it wasn't until I went to college um where I went to U.
- 01:20 - 01:25
C. S. D. When I truly felt a strong desire to be in the education field.
- 01:25 - 01:27
I had applied to the shot to be a tutor at
- 01:27 - 01:30
an elementary school and hadn't put much thought into it.
- 01:30 - 01:32
But I thought it would be a good
- 01:32 - 01:35
experience considering I had plans to pursue education
- 01:36 - 01:36
there.
- 01:36 - 01:41
I met two students both of whom were asian immigrants learning to find a place um
- 01:42 - 01:46
at the school I spent a lot of my time at this job working one
- 01:46 - 01:50
on one with these two students and seeing the growth made me extremely happy.
- 01:50 - 01:52
And even though I didn't really know the best
- 01:52 - 01:56
strategies and practices they were always so excited to work
- 01:56 - 01:59
with me and my heart was just really full knowing
- 01:59 - 02:01
that I could be a source of support to them
- 02:02 - 02:05
being a part of the education studies minor.
- 02:05 - 02:07
I was also placed in two different schools.
- 02:07 - 02:10
Um One being san Diego cooperative preschool
- 02:10 - 02:13
and the other being Lafayette Elementary School.
- 02:13 - 02:17
And both of those experiences were completely different. I worked with um
- 02:18 - 02:20
very different communities but it also made
- 02:20 - 02:23
me realize how valuable teachers are and how
- 02:23 - 02:27
much I wanted to help build a community that is supportive of all students no
- 02:27 - 02:32
matter what background they come from or what challenges they may face and yeah I
- 02:32 - 02:36
just loved working with all the kids and wanted to be a positive impact.
- 02:37 - 02:43
After graduating I took a brief break and then I decided that I wanted to
- 02:43 - 02:49
um go back and get my Masters in education. So I decided to attend U. C. S. D.
- 02:49 - 02:53
Again and there I learned so much about
- 02:53 - 02:56
teaching and um just practices that I could
- 02:56 - 03:00
do and implement to create a restorative classroom.
- 03:01 - 03:05
So some things that I learned about attending U. C. S. C.
- 03:05 - 03:06
Um
- 03:08 - 03:15
were to have a student centered classroom and a culturally responsive classroom.
- 03:15 - 03:18
So student centered learning is
- 03:18 - 03:22
placing students at the center which as the name implies
- 03:22 - 03:25
is essentially having a student be involved in the who,
- 03:25 - 03:27
what, where, when and how of their learning.
- 03:27 - 03:29
Keeping content accessible,
- 03:29 - 03:32
available and relevant is extremely important
- 03:32 - 03:34
in creating a student centered classroom.
- 03:34 - 03:39
Having a culturally responsive classroom also means that students, cultures
- 03:39 - 03:42
and languages are included in the learning process.
- 03:42 - 03:47
And as educators we should aim to address and eliminate biases
- 03:47 - 03:51
by promoting acceptance and respect for all cultures and life experiences.
- 03:52 - 03:53
UcsD has also provided
- 03:54 - 03:58
me with many resources where I learned how to develop engaging lessons,
- 03:58 - 04:01
focus on student inquiry and ultimately just different
- 04:01 - 04:04
ways on how to best support my students.
- 04:05 - 04:10
So aside from that I also grew a lot and learned a lot through my experience.
- 04:10 - 04:14
Soon teaching at a third grade classroom at ivy Ranch
- 04:14 - 04:18
Elementary School which was a school in Oceanside there.
- 04:18 - 04:20
I taught my first whole class lesson
- 04:21 - 04:25
and I struggled through various behavioral and classroom management strategies
- 04:25 - 04:29
and learned of the importance of building relationships with students,
- 04:29 - 04:31
staff and parents,
- 04:31 - 04:35
getting to know my students was really one of the most rewarding
- 04:35 - 04:40
experiences and um the main reasons as to why I would still
- 04:40 - 04:43
as to why I still want to be a teacher today,
- 04:47 - 04:48
I learned so much,
- 04:48 - 04:51
and I was really able to build foundational teaching practices
- 04:51 - 04:55
through my experience here and learn from my um,
- 04:55 - 04:58
learn from my guide teacher.
- 04:58 - 04:59
And yeah,
- 05:00 - 05:04
so everything that I have learned up until this point has
- 05:04 - 05:07
shaped me to become who I am as an educator,
- 05:07 - 05:09
and I hope that I can be,
- 05:09 - 05:12
become the best teacher that I can be to my
- 05:12 - 05:15
students and support them in every and any way possible.
- 05:15 - 05:19
And with that said, I appreciate everyone here and thank you so much for listening.
