  • 00:01 - 00:05

Hi, my name is jennifer LaMarca and I am an academic coach at the learning center.

  • 00:05 - 00:07

This short video is going to go through a few

  • 00:07 - 00:10

different perspectives of time to allow you to think about

  • 00:10 - 00:13

how you can manage your time from these different angles

  • 00:13 - 00:15

so that you can achieve success in your courses.

  • 00:15 - 00:18

We're going to talk through using a monthly calendar,

  • 00:19 - 00:22

then creating weekly schedules and finally how to make to do

  • 00:22 - 00:27

lists so that your daily routine feeds into that weekly routine,

  • 00:27 - 00:29

which will ultimately have you reaching

  • 00:29 - 00:31

your academic goals throughout the semester.

  • 00:32 - 00:36

First, we want to talk about understanding the big picture,

  • 00:36 - 00:41

having an idea of when your exams papers,

  • 00:41 - 00:45

projects are due and how that bumps up against your personal life.

  • 00:45 - 00:48

Can really help you get a grip on

  • 00:48 - 00:50

everything you're expected to accomplish throughout the semester.

  • 00:50 - 00:54

So we want to use a calendar that has a monthly view,

  • 00:54 - 00:57

I'm just opening up my calendar so I can show you,

  • 00:58 - 01:04

we want to see that month at a glance. This is for february. What are all those dates?

  • 01:04 - 01:06

Right. What do we have coming up?

  • 01:07 - 01:09

And how does that look from an academic perspective,

  • 01:09 - 01:12

but also from a personal perspective.

  • 01:14 - 01:16

In order to build this effectively, we want to be really,

  • 01:16 - 01:19

really aware of what's going on.

  • 01:19 - 01:22

And the first place to look is our academic

  • 01:22 - 01:26

calendar to see when are important campus states are

  • 01:26 - 01:30

these campus states are for spring 2022.

  • 01:30 - 01:33

This video you may be watching and you may not be in that semester.

  • 01:33 - 01:36

So if you're curious about the semester that you're in,

  • 01:36 - 01:40

you can google academic calendar at CSU L.

  • 01:40 - 01:40

    B.

  • 01:40 - 01:44

And you'll be taken to a page that has a list of academic years you click

  • 01:44 - 01:48

in and that will give you all of your important academic dates for that semester.

  • 01:48 - 01:51

So when we're looking at this, we want to know when does school start?

  • 01:51 - 01:53

When does it end when our finals,

  • 01:53 - 01:56

Are there any breaks or holidays where the campus is closed?

  • 01:56 - 02:00

This just helps lay the groundwork for, where are we supposed to be,

  • 02:00 - 02:01

    where we expected to be?

  • 02:02 - 02:03

And when are we taking our finals?

  • 02:03 - 02:06

We want to plug that into our monthly calendar right away

  • 02:07 - 02:08

    next

  • 02:08 - 02:10

by the end of the first week,

  • 02:10 - 02:13

hopefully you've been to class and you've been able to get your syllabi.

  • 02:13 - 02:15

What we want to do with that is not just

  • 02:15 - 02:18

leave those syllabi in their folders or in our physical

  • 02:18 - 02:20

world folders. If we print them out,

  • 02:20 - 02:24

we want to go through them and we want to pull out any big point items.

  • 02:24 - 02:28

So exams papers, projects, presentations, those really,

  • 02:28 - 02:30

really big point items that build our grade,

  • 02:30 - 02:34

we want to pull those out and situate them within our calendar.

  • 02:34 - 02:37

You know when our our midterm is going to be when our papers do,

  • 02:37 - 02:40

and ultimately when our our finals,

  • 02:40 - 02:42

we want to be aware of that from the very beginning

  • 02:42 - 02:45

so that we know how life is going to look,

  • 02:45 - 02:47

Is it going to be really busy at certain times?

  • 02:47 - 02:50

Most likely yes. Is it gonna be lighter at times? Yes.

  • 02:51 - 02:54

This awareness allows us to think about how we're going

  • 02:54 - 02:57

to spread or break up our study throughout the weeks

  • 02:57 - 03:02

to really get the time and attention we need in order to meet our big picture goals

  • 03:03 - 03:05

and finally we're people too right.

  • 03:05 - 03:08

We have personal lives and we want to know how those personal lives

  • 03:08 - 03:13

are going to work or not work maybe with our academic life.

  • 03:13 - 03:18

So thinking about, you know spring, do we have holidays? Do we have um

  • 03:18 - 03:24

birthday celebrations, weddings? Who knows? Right, what's coming up in spring

  • 03:24 - 03:27

and plop those into your monthly calendar as well?

  • 03:27 - 03:31

I know that one thing that gets a lot of people, if you celebrate Mother's day,

  • 03:31 - 03:32

    usually that's right before finals.

  • 03:32 - 03:35

So being aware that that sunday before finals,

  • 03:35 - 03:40

you might be with your family and not able to study uh knowing that is fine,

  • 03:40 - 03:42

it's fine to do that and we encourage you to

  • 03:42 - 03:44

do that because that's what allows you to stay balanced.

  • 03:44 - 03:48

But we can only manage that effectively from an academic perspective,

  • 03:48 - 03:52

if we know ahead of time and then we can spread our study out around those events.

  • 03:52 - 03:56

So getting all of those important days in your calendar is really,

  • 03:56 - 04:00

really critical to achieving balance and maintaining academic success.

  • 04:01 - 04:06

Now we're going to talk through creating a weekly schedule and this is really

  • 04:06 - 04:11

centered on making sure that you have a routine that honors your academic life,

  • 04:11 - 04:12

    right?

  • 04:12 - 04:13

We don't want to just study right before an

  • 04:13 - 04:17

exam that is using mainly our short term memory.

  • 04:17 - 04:21

And it's not allowing us to learn deep enough to perform well consistently.

  • 04:21 - 04:23

What we want to do is see this content on a regular

  • 04:23 - 04:27

basis so that we're building long term memories really solid understanding.

  • 04:27 - 04:30

So our performance on exams is great, right?

  • 04:30 - 04:32

We're able to get those AIDS that we want.

  • 04:33 - 04:38

So creating a weekly routine requires us to know when and where we are throughout

  • 04:38 - 04:40

the week what our obligations are and then

  • 04:40 - 04:43

structuring our study time around those obligations.

  • 04:43 - 04:44

So we want to think about

  • 04:45 - 04:46

    when are your classes? Right.

  • 04:46 - 04:49

That's one thing that's solid that we know every week,

  • 04:49 - 04:51

certain days and times were in class.

  • 04:52 - 04:54

We want to put that on our weekly schedule.

  • 04:54 - 04:58

Um also because this semester and some of our

  • 04:58 - 05:00

future semesters might be a little in person,

  • 05:00 - 05:01

    a little virtual.

  • 05:01 - 05:04

We want to know that to write for us this semester.

  • 05:04 - 05:08

We're virtual until the 7th of February. We want to be aware of that.

  • 05:08 - 05:11

And then once we're in person, we want to know, where are we going?

  • 05:11 - 05:12

    Where are classes at?

  • 05:13 - 05:13

    Similarly?

  • 05:13 - 05:17

We want to go through a personal life with this as well and create that schedule.

  • 05:17 - 05:19

So do we use the gym on a regular basis?

  • 05:19 - 05:22

We should definitely do that if that's something that feeds us.

  • 05:22 - 05:27

So we want to carve out that time throughout the day to get to the gym.

  • 05:27 - 05:32

If you have other things that you need to take care of family obligations, pets,

  • 05:32 - 05:33

    to take care of

  • 05:33 - 05:36

personal items that you need to fit into your day,

  • 05:36 - 05:39

make sure that you put that into your weekly schedule.

  • 05:39 - 05:43

We essentially want to build out a routine with all of our obligations first

  • 05:43 - 05:46

and then we want to look at with the time we have left over.

  • 05:47 - 05:49

When can we put study time?

  • 05:49 - 05:54

We want to shoot for studying a couple of different sessions a week per class

  • 05:54 - 05:58

and working within two hour increments seems to work really well for most students.

  • 05:58 - 06:03

So if we could say, you know, alright for history, I need to study,

  • 06:03 - 06:05

I want to study four hours a week.

  • 06:05 - 06:08

I'm going to study Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 4

  • 06:09 - 06:13

and putting that on our weekly routine and then trying to live that as best we can.

  • 06:13 - 06:17

That's gonna allow us to start to get into a groove of learning

  • 06:17 - 06:22

and processing information effectively so we can perform really well on exams.

  • 06:22 - 06:24

    Okay. Um yeah,

  • 06:26 - 06:30

and then finally this last little guy, right making to do list.

  • 06:30 - 06:30

    This is really,

  • 06:30 - 06:34

really important too because our weekly routine won't

  • 06:34 - 06:35

work if we don't plan our days,

  • 06:35 - 06:39

we need to plan on a daily basis what we are up against

  • 06:39 - 06:41

what we need to take care of tomorrow to make it work.

  • 06:42 - 06:45

So I always recommend to students, you know the end of your day,

  • 06:46 - 06:47

    sit down for a second,

  • 06:47 - 06:50

look at what you have coming up tomorrow on your weekly schedule.

  • 06:50 - 06:53

Maybe take a glance at that monthly calendar.

  • 06:53 - 06:55

Say okay I have a test coming up in a week.

  • 06:56 - 06:59

I'm gonna study Mondays and Wednesdays. Today is

  • 06:59 - 07:02

Tuesday. So tomorrow is a study session.

  • 07:02 - 07:05

What do I need to take care of in regards to this class? Right?

  • 07:05 - 07:08

And writing it down a little to do items. Maybe I need to review my notes.

  • 07:08 - 07:10

Maybe I need to complete an assignment.

  • 07:11 - 07:14

Maybe I need to do some reading or watching some videos.

  • 07:14 - 07:17

We want to put that on our to do list so that tomorrow when we sit

  • 07:17 - 07:21

down to study we're not wondering where to start and we're not kind of lost.

  • 07:21 - 07:25

We know exactly where to begin and what we need to take care of.

  • 07:26 - 07:28

So planning our days out like this can

  • 07:28 - 07:33

really really help us with focus with motivation.

  • 07:33 - 07:37

But also if we happen to have some extra time pop up in the middle of the day,

  • 07:37 - 07:40

maybe a class is canceled or a meeting gets canceled.

  • 07:40 - 07:42

We can pull out our to do list and we can be

  • 07:42 - 07:45

effective time managers by saying what can I cross off this list.

  • 07:46 - 07:51

So similarly to planning our academic life, we want to plan our personal life too.

  • 07:51 - 07:55

So if we have to mail a rent check or if we have to pick something up from the store,

  • 07:55 - 07:57

we have to make a phone call.

  • 07:57 - 07:59

We want to write those on our to do list as well.

  • 07:59 - 08:03

So that in one place we see all the things we need to accomplish throughout the day.

  • 08:03 - 08:07

I use a cute little, I like aesthetics. So I um

  • 08:08 - 08:11

you know, make an effort to find cute pads of paper but you'll see,

  • 08:11 - 08:15

I build this out to do lists and then these are just notes throughout the day.

  • 08:15 - 08:17

    There is a time

  • 08:17 - 08:21

if you can see listed by time there so that I can really say, okay,

  • 08:21 - 08:24

this is definitely happening at this time.

  • 08:24 - 08:27

I have these things to take care of. When can I fit that in in my day. Right,

  • 08:28 - 08:31

So that's our quick and dirty time management.

  • 08:31 - 08:36

Hopefully you're able to use some of these tips.

  • 08:36 - 08:41

These are great strategies and not too time consuming in and of themselves.

  • 08:41 - 08:43

So making sure that you have that monthly calendar taken

  • 08:43 - 08:47

care of ideally after that first week of the semester.

  • 08:47 - 08:50

Then looking at creating those weekly schedules,

  • 08:50 - 08:54

what does your routine look like And then finally making this to do list.

  • 08:54 - 08:57

Can help you stay on top of course work can help you pivot if you

  • 08:57 - 09:02

need to and can help you manage things that are coming up in the semester.

  • 09:02 - 09:06

If you want to meet with one of our peer coaches to carve out one of these

  • 09:06 - 09:08

are coaches can help you build out that monthly

  • 09:08 - 09:11

calendar that weekly or that daily to do.

  • 09:11 - 09:13

You can schedule with our coaches through beach,

  • 09:13 - 09:17

connect and they're available and ready to

  • 09:17 - 09:20

help you really personalize your time management

  • 09:20 - 09:23

approach and make sure that you're being as effective as you possibly can.

  • 09:24 - 09:25

    Thank you. Good luck.
