Hi everyone.
- 00:01 - 00:01
I'm ashleigh from Atlassian.
- 00:02 - 00:05
Today I'd like to share the 3Cs of marketing to
- 00:05 - 00:07
make a hybrid environment work.
- 00:08 - 00:10
We just came off of a crazy year that suddenly
- 00:11 - 00:12
forced most people to work from home.
- 00:14 - 00:15
I don't know how that looked for you, but it
- 00:15 - 00:17
was a little tricky for me.
- 00:18 - 00:18
For example.
- 00:19 - 00:21
I set up a filming studio in my living room
- 00:21 - 00:24
complete with notes laid out on amazon boxes and my
- 00:24 - 00:27
laptop balanced on a wedding photo album for conferences.
- 00:28 - 00:30
I drew mock ups on note cards and sent pictures
- 00:30 - 00:33
to my team on zoom during a virtual offsite and
- 00:34 - 00:35
I even sparred on a diagram.
- 00:36 - 00:38
I market to developers and I was struggling to articulate
- 00:39 - 00:41
a concept handily my husband is a death.
- 00:42 - 00:43
So we whipped out a pen and paper and went
- 00:43 - 00:44
back and forth on the diagram together.
- 00:46 - 00:48
But something really weird happened recently.
- 00:49 - 00:51
I went back to the office for the first time
- 00:52 - 00:54
in over a year and when I took this picture
- 00:55 - 00:56
I was alone in the office.
- 00:57 - 01:00
Now more people came in later in the morning, but
- 01:01 - 01:03
it was just so different than when we left for
- 01:03 - 01:04
just a few weeks.
- 01:06 - 01:07
And then I worked from home the next day.
- 01:08 - 01:10
So as we start figuring out how work looks going
- 01:11 - 01:13
forward, a lot of people think it's black and white,
- 01:14 - 01:14
everyone works remote.
- 01:15 - 01:18
Everyone comes into the office, we just use our same
- 01:18 - 01:20
ways of working, but employees can choose where to work
- 01:22 - 01:25
instead. I think we need to treat our colleagues like
- 01:25 - 01:28
our customers because it's not just where we work.
- 01:28 - 01:29
That's changed.
- 01:29 - 01:30
It's how we work.
- 01:31 - 01:33
Many teams are struggling to figure out how to work
- 01:34 - 01:37
together in a hybrid environment, but I would suggest that
- 01:37 - 01:41
marketers have some transferable skills to help figure this out.
- 01:41 - 01:44
We think about three key elements in the audience journey
- 01:45 - 01:47
that we can translate into our hybrid work journey.
- 01:48 - 01:52
The 3Cs are context content and comments.
- 01:54 - 01:57
Marketers start by understanding the context of our audience.
- 01:58 - 01:58
Were they?
- 01:59 - 02:00
What do they like?
- 02:01 - 02:02
What are their pain points and challenges?
- 02:03 - 02:04
How did they end up on our website?
- 02:05 - 02:06
How do they navigate through our product?
- 02:07 - 02:10
And we can ask these same questions about our colleagues
- 02:11 - 02:13
to gain context on how we work together in a
- 02:13 - 02:14
hybrid environment.
- 02:15 - 02:18
For example at Lassie and created the work life impact
- 02:19 - 02:22
play to help teams understand their colleagues context Across three
- 02:22 - 02:27
dimensions, each person fills out information about their home office,
- 02:28 - 02:30
what their role entails on the team and their professional
- 02:31 - 02:32
and personal support networks.
- 02:33 - 02:36
Then everyone comes together to discuss the results to build
- 02:36 - 02:38
trust, shared understanding and empathy.
- 02:40 - 02:42
Many teams also write user manuals.
- 02:43 - 02:46
This document covers all sorts of details like your usual
- 02:47 - 02:50
work hours and your time zone, your preferred communication method
- 02:50 - 02:53
and other details that might impact how you collaborate with
- 02:53 - 02:58
teammates. For example, I like work life integration so I'll
- 02:58 - 03:01
answer slack pings between sets at the gym or standing
- 03:01 - 03:02
in line at the grocery store.
- 03:03 - 03:06
But my colleague prefers work life balance so she's all
- 03:07 - 03:11
in during working hours, all business but she disconnects in
- 03:11 - 03:12
the evenings to spend time with her family.
- 03:15 - 03:17
Now that we know our context, it's time to create
- 03:17 - 03:20
content to empower, educate and advocate.
- 03:22 - 03:24
We write blogs and presentations and videos for our customers
- 03:25 - 03:28
and we can use the same tactic to facilitate teamwork
- 03:28 - 03:29
in a hybrid environment.
- 03:30 - 03:33
At last we use confluence to write internal blog posts.
- 03:34 - 03:37
We also document best practices and results on pages that
- 03:37 - 03:38
are open by default.
- 03:40 - 03:44
You'll notice that I mentioned blogs and pages because just
- 03:44 - 03:48
like an external audience, your internal audience needs different types
- 03:48 - 03:48
of content.
- 03:50 - 03:52
As you can see in this example, for an internal
- 03:52 - 03:55
blog post, I wrote a quippy title, a summary at
- 03:56 - 03:58
the top and I used a conversational writing style.
- 03:59 - 04:01
I tried to make the content about what my audience
- 04:02 - 04:05
needs to hear, not about selling my work to my
- 04:05 - 04:09
managers. We've also shifted to creating short on demand videos
- 04:10 - 04:13
for many of our updates on Okay ours strategy and
- 04:13 - 04:16
programs. We don't really need a live meeting to give
- 04:16 - 04:19
a status update, especially when our peers are working in
- 04:19 - 04:20
different time zones.
- 04:20 - 04:22
And it can be tough to read about a concept
- 04:23 - 04:25
on a long form page instead of just watching a
- 04:25 - 04:26
walk through or a short demo.
- 04:27 - 04:29
But a lot of people think that it takes special
- 04:30 - 04:31
skills and a lot of time to create a video.
- 04:32 - 04:35
But if we get in this mindset that videos are
- 04:35 - 04:38
just sharing like we would in the office, we start
- 04:38 - 04:39
to realize that we can create them faster.
- 04:40 - 04:43
In this case I just opened up zoom and started
- 04:43 - 04:46
sharing my screen and walked through for about 10 minutes.
- 04:47 - 04:49
Like I would if I was giving a presentation in
- 04:49 - 04:52
the office in person and in this case I didn't
- 04:52 - 04:54
even bother to trim off the ends so you can
- 04:54 - 04:56
literally see me pointing and clicking to start the screen
- 04:56 - 05:01
chair. Finally, marketers love getting customer feedback and we need
- 05:01 - 05:04
to make the same efforts to give our colleagues the
- 05:04 - 05:04
ability to comment.
- 05:06 - 05:08
People love the office because it's easier to collaborate when
- 05:08 - 05:10
you can just pop by someone's desk.
- 05:11 - 05:14
In our case confluence allows us to comment in line
- 05:14 - 05:18
on the page and tag colleagues for input and of
- 05:18 - 05:20
course you could do this with other tools like google
- 05:20 - 05:20
docs as well.
- 05:21 - 05:25
But the real benefit is the culture and mindset around
- 05:25 - 05:26
giving and receiving feedback.
- 05:28 - 05:30
We know that people commenting on our posts have good
- 05:30 - 05:34
intentions to make the work better and we recognize that
- 05:34 - 05:38
sometimes we might need to move to a conversation but
- 05:38 - 05:41
we have robust discussions in our comments which ensures that
- 05:41 - 05:44
all stakeholders have a chance to give their input no
- 05:44 - 05:45
matter where they're working.
- 05:46 - 05:49
We also use the polling feature in slack and include
- 05:49 - 05:52
an emoji for our monday mood in our weekly digital
- 05:52 - 05:52
stand ups.
- 05:53 - 05:55
We use the voting feature and hello to prioritize work
- 05:56 - 05:58
from Metro's vote on the best concept for a campaign
- 05:59 - 06:03
and generally gain consensus among the group as marketers.
- 06:03 - 06:06
We want to give the right message to the right
- 06:06 - 06:08
person in the right place at the right time when
- 06:08 - 06:09
we think about our customers.
- 06:10 - 06:13
So now we need to apply these same skills to
- 06:13 - 06:14
our colleagues as well.
- 06:16 - 06:18
If you're looking for more tips to make a hybrid
- 06:18 - 06:21
environment work for you, I encourage you to check out
- 06:21 - 06:22
at last season's free team playbook.
- 06:23 - 06:26
It includes exercises and templates to help you make the
- 06:26 - 06:29
most of hybrid work and be sure to catch the
- 06:29 - 06:30
rest of Prezi hybrid work series.
- 06:31 - 06:33
And if you'd like to connect, I would love to
- 06:34 - 06:36
continue the conversation on twitter and linkedin.
- 06:37 - 06:38
Thank you so much.
