  • 00:00 - 00:00

    Hello,

  • 00:00 - 00:07

my name is Rachel nath and I am here to tell you today why I want to become a teacher.

  • 00:07 - 00:10

Many people in my life have asked me why would you choose that path.

  • 00:10 - 00:14

Kids are so challenging there so exhausting.

  • 00:14 - 00:17

The pay is so underrated and I would love to answer all

  • 00:17 - 00:20

those questions which I'm here today to answer them for you.

  • 00:21 - 00:25

So for starters I've had many influences, my life, teachers, family members,

  • 00:25 - 00:26

    peers,

  • 00:26 - 00:32

but today I'd like to special shout out to the ones who have really made an impact.

  • 00:32 - 00:33

    So

  • 00:33 - 00:35

growing up I was surrounded by teachers.

  • 00:35 - 00:39

I even so often said teaching runs in my bones because

  • 00:39 - 00:41

I've been surrounded by it since I was a little girl.

  • 00:41 - 00:44

In fact most of my family members in this picture

  • 00:44 - 00:47

right here ended up becoming teachers because of my grandmother,

  • 00:47 - 00:50

    the ultimate influence grandma Marsha.

  • 00:50 - 00:55

Now in this picture before you see we have in the pink, this is aunt heather.

  • 00:55 - 00:58

My aunt ended up running her own daycare center in the

  • 00:58 - 01:00

sanctity of her own home for many years with many,

  • 01:00 - 01:05

many Children and loved on them and was very much like favored

  • 01:05 - 01:09

by all then we have right here on the doll horse.

  • 01:09 - 01:14

My mother, my mother ended up being a preschool teacher, a elementary

  • 01:14 - 01:18

teacher in a k through 12 district to now running a very

  • 01:18 - 01:22

successful online school business And so I look up to her many

  • 01:22 - 01:25

ways and I aspire to be just like her in a lot

  • 01:25 - 01:28

of ways here we have in the middle or center corner.

  • 01:29 - 01:32

My aunt Heidi who ended up marrying someone and moving to south America chile

  • 01:32 - 01:36

and becoming a school teacher for underprivileged

  • 01:36 - 01:39

Children in South America who are Chilean and

  • 01:39 - 01:43

she teaches them english for many many years and was very beloved by all.

  • 01:43 - 01:47

Then the last we have aunt holly, she did not end up being a teacher,

  • 01:47 - 01:51

she wanted to become a nurse but she did in fact do childcare.

  • 01:51 - 01:56

She had many, many Children she nanny for and all of them loved her very,

  • 01:56 - 01:59

very much and so you could say teaching was kind of

  • 01:59 - 02:04

like my only choice but for many reasons I chose it.

  • 02:04 - 02:08

In fact this lovely lady right here next to me is my grandma Marcia.

  • 02:08 - 02:12

She meant the absolute world to me.

  • 02:12 - 02:14

I always heard stories of her teaching days in

  • 02:14 - 02:17

second grade and how she was the beloved teacher.

  • 02:17 - 02:18

    Everyone's favorite.

  • 02:18 - 02:24

Everyone adored her and I could just see why because her her essence and

  • 02:24 - 02:31

her spirit was so much joy and loved by all like I mean you would

  • 02:31 - 02:35

have loved to have met her so and we would play school when I was

  • 02:35 - 02:40

little so you could say you know teaching was just it was the alternative and

  • 02:41 - 02:42

    yeah,

  • 02:42 - 02:43

    no

  • 02:43 - 02:47

as many Children can testify with childhood trauma

  • 02:47 - 02:49

school is never just a piece of cake.

  • 02:49 - 02:51

    In fact many, many,

  • 02:51 - 02:57

many of my school years I was made fun of bullied and just picked on by many,

  • 02:57 - 03:02

many kids but there was one teacher who stood out to me and that was the one right here,

  • 03:02 - 03:04

pictured next to me in the first grade.

  • 03:04 - 03:10

Her name was Mrs morrow, she was light sunshine in a bottle and just a genuine,

  • 03:10 - 03:11

    amazing person.

  • 03:11 - 03:16

I remember my first day of school she made sure that every student felt included.

  • 03:16 - 03:20

Every student felt special and every student as cliche as that sounds,

  • 03:20 - 03:24

which I know it does, she just made sure every student was appreciated.

  • 03:24 - 03:29

I remember one of my fondest memories was when we went on the carpet and we had

  • 03:29 - 03:34

story time and we would all sit there and be amazed by her and you know kids,

  • 03:34 - 03:37

they have a short attention span, so if they can lock on to you,

  • 03:37 - 03:41

you got their attention, you absolutely mean something to them.

  • 03:41 - 03:43

And so she would embellish the voices of the

  • 03:43 - 03:45

characters and she would just come to life.

  • 03:45 - 03:48

And I remember that's when I fell in love with reading was

  • 03:48 - 03:51

through her story times and I just loved it so much.

  • 03:51 - 03:57

I look forward to it every single week. And you know, she was always loving and kind.

  • 03:57 - 04:00

I remember personal story when my father passed away,

  • 04:00 - 04:04

she went to my father's funeral and was there for me during this difficult time.

  • 04:04 - 04:07

So she means a lot to me. Now,

  • 04:08 - 04:10

you could say that schooling wasn't all peaches in korean

  • 04:10 - 04:13

because I got bullied a lot like I said,

  • 04:13 - 04:15

but I also got made fun of for having a learning disability,

  • 04:15 - 04:18

    never experienced racism or discrimination,

  • 04:18 - 04:21

but did get picked on for having a learning disability and

  • 04:21 - 04:23

was called Rachel math because I wasn't good at math.

  • 04:23 - 04:27

I almost got held back from kindergarten but thankfully I

  • 04:27 - 04:30

overcame those and the people that stood by me,

  • 04:30 - 04:31

    those educators,

  • 04:31 - 04:34

those teachers challenged me and showed me what a teacher

  • 04:34 - 04:37

is as someone who perseveres and is your biggest fan

  • 04:37 - 04:39

And that is the type of teacher I want to be.

  • 04:39 - 04:42

One memory that stands out is a few years ago in

  • 04:42 - 04:46

2018 I took a semester off and went to South America

  • 04:46 - 04:50

Chile with my aunt Heidi and we worked in underprivileged schools

  • 04:50 - 04:52

and daycare centers and with a look on the kids faces,

  • 04:52 - 04:55

you can say we had a good time and I learned a lot.

  • 04:55 - 04:57

I learned how to be bilingual.

  • 04:57 - 05:01

I learned how to transition and be independent and be a

  • 05:01 - 05:04

teacher and I don't take any of those memories for granted.

  • 05:04 - 05:08

And it really showed the community of how much they

  • 05:08 - 05:11

have so little yet they are so grateful for everything you

  • 05:11 - 05:15

give them and the love you show them because they don't

  • 05:15 - 05:17

get that shown at home that affection and that affirmation.

  • 05:17 - 05:20

So it definitely stood out to me

  • 05:20 - 05:22

these last photos I have before me is my aunt Heidi and I we

  • 05:22 - 05:25

got very close during this time together and I'm very grateful for that.

  • 05:25 - 05:28

She showed me what an educator is as someone who was firm

  • 05:28 - 05:32

but kind and supportive and make sure that you are being,

  • 05:32 - 05:33

that your needs are being met.

  • 05:33 - 05:35

And this is mail in many,

  • 05:35 - 05:38

many Children I gave my heart to and she was definitely one of them.

  • 05:38 - 05:44

And she definitely showed me that teaching is what I'm supposed to do and that

  • 05:44 - 05:48

teaching is about putting the students needs first. And I know my experience.

  • 05:48 - 05:52

I want to be the type of teacher that cares for the students

  • 05:52 - 05:57

intentionally and their needs and loves them and make sure they feel included.

  • 05:57 - 05:58

So I hope you enjoy this present.
