  • 00:00 - 00:01

    hmm,

  • 00:01 - 00:02

Hey, my name is Ron ewing.

  • 00:02 - 00:05

I'm a chapter president with truth at work here in central indiana.

  • 00:06 - 00:08

Um, but I spent a time in my career,

  • 00:08 - 00:11

about 14 years where I worked with a firmware servant leadership

  • 00:11 - 00:14

was the core value of a for profit company.

  • 00:14 - 00:18

And the fact that that core value was there did flow out of the faith in christ

  • 00:19 - 00:20

    of our founding Ceo.

  • 00:21 - 00:25

And I saw this play out in all the other core values that flowed from it,

  • 00:25 - 00:28

but also from this statement that we would talk about

  • 00:28 - 00:30

all the time that if we would serve people well,

  • 00:30 - 00:32

they would allow us to lead

  • 00:32 - 00:35

and that leadership would happen internally and externally and whether it

  • 00:35 - 00:38

was different areas of the company where there was outside clients,

  • 00:38 - 00:42

one of the stories was really popular that it was so effective is that when

  • 00:42 - 00:46

our Ceo did onboarding anytime between your first and 90th day with the firm,

  • 00:46 - 00:48

you'd go meet with him about a 10 minute

  • 00:48 - 00:51

meeting and he would ask you essentially one question

  • 00:52 - 00:55

whether you were coming in as an intern, whether you're coming in as a,

  • 00:55 - 00:56

as a partner in the firm

  • 00:57 - 01:00

and the question would be this, what's the core value Assessment Associates.

  • 01:01 - 01:04

And if that person didn't roll off their tongues servant leadership,

  • 01:04 - 01:07

he would quietly say, I'll tell you what, let's pause our meeting.

  • 01:08 - 01:11

You go out into the out into the company of about 110 people

  • 01:12 - 01:14

and you just ask until you feel comfortable,

  • 01:14 - 01:17

you found you found what the core value of Schmidt is.

  • 01:17 - 01:19

And so it was interesting because some people would

  • 01:19 - 01:21

go and ask the first person they'd see,

  • 01:21 - 01:22

    they would get the answer.

  • 01:22 - 01:23

    They'd come right back.

  • 01:23 - 01:25

Some people would have to go and ask 56 people to make sure they felt like

  • 01:25 - 01:29

they were getting the right answer or hear the answer enough times to believe it.

  • 01:29 - 01:33

Um and they'd come back and have the rest of that meeting with the Ceo.

  • 01:33 - 01:36

But it was incredibly impactful of just driving in.

  • 01:36 - 01:40

Do is there anybody in the company does the random person you run into?

  • 01:40 - 01:42

Are they gonna know what the servant said that

  • 01:42 - 01:44

servant leadership was the core value of the company?

  • 01:45 - 01:48

Another thing that happened that I'll end with this is we

  • 01:48 - 01:51

had a graduate student one time from Canada reach out to our

  • 01:51 - 01:55

Ceo and they were doing their um their graduate thesis work

  • 01:55 - 01:59

on servant leadership as a core value for for profit companies.

  • 01:59 - 02:02

And they reached out to Ceo and said can we come interview some people in your firm.

  • 02:03 - 02:05

And so they did the CEO gave me access to about

  • 02:05 - 02:09

25 people and um I wasn't on the list of the 25

  • 02:09 - 02:11

but I got called in to sub for someone who was sick

  • 02:11 - 02:14

and I was the 25th person to walk into the room.

  • 02:14 - 02:17

And when I did I sat down and the lady doing the research looked

  • 02:17 - 02:20

at me and she says I really don't need to ask you any questions.

  • 02:20 - 02:21

And I said why is that?

  • 02:21 - 02:25

She goes, I've already heard the same answer from 24 of your coworkers,

  • 02:25 - 02:28

but I've heard it in 24 different ways.

  • 02:29 - 02:31

You guys aren't repeating a mantra,

  • 02:31 - 02:34

servant leadership is your core value and you're living it out

  • 02:34 - 02:37

no matter what part of the firm that you work in.

  • 02:37 - 02:39

So that was really cool from just seeing the depth

  • 02:39 - 02:43

of the penetration of core value being servant leadership.

  • 02:43 - 02:43

    Now,

  • 02:43 - 02:46

the fun part from the face standpoint is I got to look to that

  • 02:46 - 02:49

as a graduate student and I said I want to ask you a question then

  • 02:49 - 02:51

and she said okay, she had her pen ready

  • 02:51 - 02:55

and I said I want you to go back to your research and ask yourself this,

  • 02:55 - 02:57

is there any company that has servant leadership

  • 02:58 - 02:59

    as their core value?

  • 03:00 - 03:02

That in their founding or in their current ownership or leadership

  • 03:03 - 03:04

    doesn't have christ followers

  • 03:05 - 03:06

because I don't think there are.

  • 03:07 - 03:10

And I could tell by the way she intently wrote down the question,

  • 03:10 - 03:14

I'm not sure she came at this perspective, this,

  • 03:14 - 03:16

this research from a from a faith in christ

  • 03:17 - 03:19

and the wonderful thing about servant leadership is

  • 03:19 - 03:22

we get to model the ultimate servant leader,

  • 03:22 - 03:23

    jesus,

  • 03:23 - 03:27

who clearly was the leader of the king of the universe, creator of the universe,

  • 03:27 - 03:32

but came to serve us as a suffering servant to come to die on the cross for us.

  • 03:32 - 03:37

So just a quick story about servant leadership that can really be powerful,

  • 03:37 - 03:42

really be effective in the, in the marketplace, in the for profit world.

  • 03:43 - 03:44

    So thanks a lot.
