Hi. My name is Brie Reynolds, and I am a
- 00:03 - 00:05
career coach at Flex Jobs, which is the leading and
- 00:06 - 00:08
most trusted site for remote job listings.
- 00:09 - 00:10
And I'm here today to talk to you about how
- 00:11 - 00:12
to spot remote job scams.
- 00:14 - 00:16
The reason that we need to be pretty careful when
- 00:16 - 00:19
we're looking for a remote job online is because there
- 00:19 - 00:24
are 60 to 70 scams for everyone, really job listing
- 00:24 - 00:27
when it comes to remote jobs and some of them
- 00:27 - 00:28
are pretty easy to spot.
- 00:28 - 00:29
Others are much more sophisticated.
- 00:30 - 00:33
So it's really important to know what to look for
- 00:33 - 00:36
to keep yourself safe and find a real job.
- 00:38 - 00:40
I'm gonna be talking about three different things today.
- 00:41 - 00:44
What are remote job scams, how to actually spot them
- 00:45 - 00:48
and how to check a suspicious job or company that
- 00:48 - 00:50
you found to see if it is a scam or
- 00:51 - 00:51
a real opportunity.
- 00:54 - 00:56
So the first thing I'm going to cover is what
- 00:56 - 00:57
are remote job scams?
- 00:59 - 01:01
Really. The are a couple of different things.
- 01:01 - 01:03
There are fake remote job ads.
- 01:04 - 01:08
They are often seeking sensitive information or money from you,
- 01:08 - 01:11
and there are also more sophisticated scams that we call
- 01:11 - 01:15
copycat companies, where the scammers will actually pose as a
- 01:15 - 01:19
riel well known company on, and they will use their
- 01:19 - 01:22
logo, their website designed to create a brand new site
- 01:23 - 01:25
that lures people in for a remote job scam.
- 01:27 - 01:28
So some of the ways that you can actually spot
- 01:29 - 01:33
different remote job scams are if you receive a fake
- 01:33 - 01:36
job listing or a fake email, you have to know
- 01:36 - 01:39
that when you're searching online, most job words do not
- 01:40 - 01:42
pre screen the jobs and companies that are on their
- 01:42 - 01:46
site. So you are really responsible when you're searching online
- 01:47 - 01:51
for finding and verifying that a job is legitimate, you
- 01:51 - 01:54
might also receive emails that promise these types of jobs,
- 01:54 - 01:56
and you can also get them on social media and
- 01:57 - 01:59
sites like Lengthen, where you're interacting with different people.
- 02:00 - 02:04
Scammers try to use those situations as well to get
- 02:04 - 02:08
into your messages and your emails to lure you into
- 02:08 - 02:09
their scam.
- 02:10 - 02:12
Most of these will promise something like lots of money
- 02:13 - 02:16
or really easy work, and it's also extremely easy to
- 02:16 - 02:16
get a job offer.
- 02:17 - 02:19
Sometimes they will offer you a job on the spot.
- 02:19 - 02:21
They might actually email you and say that they'd like
- 02:21 - 02:24
to offer you a job, or they will interview you
- 02:24 - 02:27
very briefly on a phone or video interview, or oftentimes,
- 02:28 - 02:30
an instant messaging or online chat interview, which is also
- 02:31 - 02:33
a big red flag, and then they'll offer you the
- 02:33 - 02:33
job immediately.
- 02:34 - 02:36
They'll also urge you to accept the job really quickly,
- 02:37 - 02:37
which is a big red flag.
- 02:39 - 02:41
So you want to be able to spot these different
- 02:41 - 02:42
things in order to keep yourself states.
- 02:43 - 02:45
The other thing to pay attention to is the spelling
- 02:45 - 02:47
and grammar in a job listing.
- 02:47 - 02:49
If there are lots of mistakes or there's lots of
- 02:49 - 02:54
capitalisation or punctuation, lots of dollar signs and exclamation points,
- 02:54 - 02:56
that's a big sign that you're looking at a scam
- 02:56 - 02:56
as well.
- 02:59 - 03:01
One of the things that most of these scams have
- 03:02 - 03:03
in common is that they will ask you for personal
- 03:04 - 03:08
sensitive data like your bank account number, credit card information,
- 03:08 - 03:12
social Security number and any other important information like that
- 03:12 - 03:15
that you really need to keep safe and secure A
- 03:15 - 03:17
legitimate job will not ask for any of that information
- 03:18 - 03:21
until well after the job offer has been made and
- 03:21 - 03:23
you are being on board in the position, and they'll
- 03:23 - 03:26
only do that in terms of setting up a a
- 03:27 - 03:31
paycheck deposit or getting your information for tax purposes.
- 03:32 - 03:35
They also in scams, will often ask you to do
- 03:35 - 03:38
things like wire transfers for money, whether it's receiving a
- 03:38 - 03:41
check or receiving money into your bank account or sending
- 03:42 - 03:44
money. And they might also ask you to do something
- 03:44 - 03:46
like purchase gift cards and send those and you'll be
- 03:47 - 03:50
reimbursed any time you're using your own funds in order
- 03:51 - 03:53
to do a job that's a huge red flag.
- 03:54 - 03:56
You also should not have to pay for any supposed
- 03:56 - 04:00
to work from home kits or software programs to get
- 04:00 - 04:01
you started working from home.
- 04:02 - 04:04
Legitimate remote jobs do not require that sort of thing.
- 04:06 - 04:08
The next thing is how to actually check to see
- 04:09 - 04:12
if you have found a suspicious job or company, whether
- 04:13 - 04:14
it's a scam or a real job.
- 04:15 - 04:17
And I mentioned before that most job words do not
- 04:17 - 04:19
pre screen the jobs and companies that are on their
- 04:19 - 04:21
site. They leave it up to the individual job seekers
- 04:22 - 04:23
to do that research themselves.
- 04:24 - 04:25
One of the things that we do it.
- 04:25 - 04:28
Flex jobs is pre screen every job and company before
- 04:28 - 04:29
it gets listed.
- 04:30 - 04:32
So we have a lot of experience going through scam
- 04:33 - 04:36
job listings and feeling out which are really, which are
- 04:36 - 04:38
fake and keeping job seekers safe.
- 04:38 - 04:40
So some of the things you can do it's actually
- 04:40 - 04:43
very simple to keep yourself safe in these early stages.
- 04:44 - 04:46
First of all, you just do a search online for
- 04:47 - 04:49
either the company's name or the job title that you
- 04:49 - 04:53
feel is suspicious and the key word scam and what
- 04:53 - 04:55
that's going to bring back our local news articles that
- 04:56 - 04:59
have been written where they have figured out that this
- 04:59 - 05:01
is a scam and the news has reported on it.
- 05:01 - 05:04
It might bring back better Business Bureau ratings or reports.
- 05:05 - 05:08
FBI warnings are also common, and it comes toe online
- 05:09 - 05:12
scams. And it will also bring back any message boards
- 05:12 - 05:15
where people have warned others that they have been scammed
- 05:16 - 05:17
by this particular job or company.
- 05:18 - 05:19
So it's really important to do that search.
- 05:20 - 05:21
It only takes a couple minutes, and you can keep
- 05:21 - 05:22
yourself safe that way.
- 05:23 - 05:26
The other thing, if you think you're dealing with a
- 05:26 - 05:29
copycat company where it seems like a well known companies
- 05:30 - 05:32
offering a work from home job, but they are actually
- 05:33 - 05:37
a fake company that's scam and is posing as that
- 05:37 - 05:37
real company.
- 05:38 - 05:40
Do a search for the rial company's name and the
- 05:40 - 05:43
keyword careers, and you can find their riel careers website.
- 05:44 - 05:46
You can compare the address that you were on that
- 05:47 - 05:50
seemed suspicious with the Web address of the Rial Careers
- 05:50 - 05:51
Page to see if they're the same.
- 05:52 - 05:54
If they're not the same, you have most likely found
- 05:54 - 05:55
a scam.
- 05:57 - 06:00
The last thing I'll say is surge on reputable sites.
- 06:00 - 06:02
There are so many job boards out there, it's hard
- 06:03 - 06:05
to know which ones to focus on a site like
- 06:05 - 06:08
Flex Jobs does pre screen all of the jobs and
- 06:08 - 06:11
companies before they're listed to make sure that everything is
- 06:11 - 06:15
above board that were only posting legitimate jobs and that
- 06:15 - 06:17
they are high quality and professional level remote jobs.
- 06:18 - 06:20
And we do a lot of work to keep jobseekers
- 06:20 - 06:23
safe. But whether you're searching on flex jobs or anywhere
- 06:23 - 06:26
else, do your research about the job boards that you're
- 06:26 - 06:29
on. See what their policies are, see how they do
- 06:30 - 06:32
different screening of their jobs and their companies.
- 06:32 - 06:34
And if they do any of that in order to
- 06:34 - 06:37
keep their job seekers safe, that's one of the biggest
- 06:37 - 06:37
things you can do.
- 06:38 - 06:40
To keep yourself safe is just search on job boards
- 06:40 - 06:43
that have good reputations and that you have researched to
- 06:43 - 06:45
make sure that they're doing a good job for their
- 06:45 - 06:45
job seekers.
- 06:48 - 06:49
That's all about job scams for today.
- 06:50 - 06:51
I wish you the best of luck in your remote
- 06:52 - 06:52
job search.
