  • 00:00 - 00:02

Welcome to tip number five plotted out,

  • 00:02 - 00:06

which is the fifth tip on our countdown of seven tips for creating engaging,

  • 00:06 - 00:08

    effective instructional videos.

  • 00:08 - 00:10

    I'm paul Chesky presses,

  • 00:10 - 00:13

teacher and residents and today we're going to talk about how to be creative,

  • 00:13 - 00:18

how to get started with our presence is and how to how to simply begin

  • 00:18 - 00:22

and then plot out our content before we actually get into the design tools.

  • 00:22 - 00:25

So I'm going to give you some organizational structures to work with.

  • 00:25 - 00:27

    Alright, let's get started.

  • 00:27 - 00:28

    So when I first started,

  • 00:28 - 00:32

I think about what is my topic and what does that need to look like on the screen?

  • 00:32 - 00:34

So what I have is, um,

  • 00:34 - 00:38

I usually pick some colors and then font as

  • 00:38 - 00:41

well as the shapes and you might ask well why

  • 00:41 - 00:45

those things, well they're at the top level of your design suite,

  • 00:45 - 00:50

inside of President feature set, so you'll pick the colors and whatnot.

  • 00:50 - 00:54

So if I'm doing something on the 17th century I may not use all this purple,

  • 00:54 - 00:58

I might have swoopy font, I might have some brown in there.

  • 00:58 - 01:02

Um, things that connote that time of, of, of,

  • 01:02 - 01:08

of place as well as the content that I have, whether it be a journey or art or whatever,

  • 01:08 - 01:09

    the human body,

  • 01:09 - 01:11

it would all look slightly different and we

  • 01:11 - 01:14

all have different choices at a foundational level,

  • 01:14 - 01:16

like your font, your color and your shapes.

  • 01:16 - 01:19

Okay, here are some pieces that I've done over the years.

  • 01:19 - 01:20

I'm going to go through these really quickly.

  • 01:20 - 01:25

This first one came out of main uh, main is on the water.

  • 01:25 - 01:27

There's nautical themes, their mascots and everything.

  • 01:27 - 01:32

So I chose really bold colors as well as fonts and nautical shapes in there as well.

  • 01:32 - 01:37

Um, then I did one on the brain and this one is great because the brain is right there.

  • 01:37 - 01:41

You see it, but also different images around the brain.

  • 01:41 - 01:44

Uh, connote the questions that we have about brain,

  • 01:44 - 01:46

their soccer balls to the head too hard.

  • 01:46 - 01:51

Do video games destroy the brain the brain to social media, all of those things.

  • 01:51 - 01:55

Um, and then also it was connected throughout the whole piece

  • 01:55 - 01:58

to bring some continuity to it. It's a lovely deck.

  • 01:58 - 02:00

Um, next we have here something.

  • 02:00 - 02:04

Jamie ewing ewing used um, it's on the great barrier reef.

  • 02:04 - 02:08

We use some great images here of coral and fish.

  • 02:08 - 02:12

Those are all independent assets that come together with words and text

  • 02:12 - 02:16

to make a lovely piece that looks like Jamie would be underwater

  • 02:16 - 02:19

in this piece. I worked with Helene Marshall, a professor on the east coast and,

  • 02:20 - 02:22

and she had a deck, a PowerPoint deck.

  • 02:22 - 02:25

And I noticed that she had this sprout, You'll see it in the corner there.

  • 02:25 - 02:29

And I asked, well Elaine how and why did you use that?

  • 02:29 - 02:29

    And she goes, well,

  • 02:29 - 02:31

I wanted to get at this idea of creating

  • 02:31 - 02:34

a fertile space for your students to grow online.

  • 02:34 - 02:38

And so I ran with it. I just used the green and I used the yellow.

  • 02:38 - 02:43

I used that sprout in the various clip arts and I even used sort

  • 02:43 - 02:47

of a gray to act as a contrast to the yellow and the green,

  • 02:47 - 02:49

but I also thought it looked sort of, you know,

  • 02:49 - 02:52

like dirt and mud and where things grow.

  • 02:52 - 02:56

And so I used that sort of color combination along with the fonts in order to do that.

  • 02:57 - 02:58

    Um here's another great one.

  • 02:58 - 03:00

    This is Brianna Hodges,

  • 03:00 - 03:03

she's an educational consultant that does a lot of keynotes.

  • 03:03 - 03:05

Um She also has a background in marketing and what

  • 03:05 - 03:08

you'll notice here is that look at her name,

  • 03:08 - 03:12

she uses a script and then she uses a nice modern fought for her last name.

  • 03:12 - 03:14

I love that. She also has very bright colors.

  • 03:14 - 03:16

Um they sort of remind me a little bit of

  • 03:16 - 03:19

the beach and that's exactly what she was going for.

  • 03:19 - 03:23

Um and then when you get into it, she starts using these brush strokes.

  • 03:23 - 03:25

And I asked her what, what is that all about?

  • 03:25 - 03:26

    And she goes, well,

  • 03:26 - 03:29

it has to do with the central idea that I get out and a lot of my keynotes,

  • 03:29 - 03:32

which is this idea of unfinished leaders or

  • 03:32 - 03:35

having to be creative or starting off fresh.

  • 03:35 - 03:37

So there's the swatches there, right?

  • 03:37 - 03:39

    The, the paintbrush,

  • 03:39 - 03:44

um as well as the splatters and she uses that throughout to get at that theme.

  • 03:45 - 03:45

    Okay.

  • 03:45 - 03:49

Um these are some questions that I asked folks when they first start

  • 03:49 - 03:53

working with me around different design elements and what they want to do.

  • 03:53 - 03:55

Um and they can be very handy,

  • 03:55 - 03:59

like how do you reinforce the elements of tone and tone that you have through

  • 03:59 - 04:04

your color as as well as your graphic design and the images that you're using.

  • 04:05 - 04:07

What is the metaphor? What colors do you want to use?

  • 04:07 - 04:09

All of that is super helpful when you start.

  • 04:10 - 04:10

    Okay,

  • 04:10 - 04:11

now I'm going to get into some of the

  • 04:11 - 04:14

organizational stuff and you might remember that in press.

  • 04:14 - 04:16

E there's two ways to create the videos.

  • 04:16 - 04:19

One is in the quick record area in the present video,

  • 04:19 - 04:21

    the others in present present.

  • 04:21 - 04:23

I'm gonna go through both real quickly here.

  • 04:23 - 04:28

This first one is on quick record and in that you have 15 slides in 15 minutes.

  • 04:28 - 04:32

It's a bit like a slowdown peta kuka depending on how fast you go right.

  • 04:32 - 04:34

    Um so anyway,

  • 04:34 - 04:40

you have 14 templates to work with and these can't really be customized that much.

  • 04:40 - 04:42

Um you can add content to the top,

  • 04:42 - 04:45

but basically the colors in the front will remain the same.

  • 04:45 - 04:49

Um You just add the images and the text on top of it and one slide goes up and

  • 04:49 - 04:51

then the next slide comes up and the next

  • 04:51 - 04:54

slide comes up so it's a very simple structure.

  • 04:55 - 04:59

Um but you can do some customization if you have the right version of present,

  • 04:59 - 05:03

you can add your own colors and fonts to that quick record set.

  • 05:03 - 05:08

Um When I do the structure, however you'll notice that there's not a lot there,

  • 05:08 - 05:11

it's slide in the text and the image.

  • 05:11 - 05:17

What are those uh what are, what is it that I want to add on the screen? I plotted out.

  • 05:17 - 05:19

I put it on there I guess with text I kind of

  • 05:20 - 05:24

Try to go under 12 words because there's not a lot of room

  • 05:24 - 05:28

for text on the screen when you're working in a quick record.

  • 05:28 - 05:33

So just remember that. Don't get verbose. Just keep it really simple.

  • 05:33 - 05:37

Alright, next up we have present present now with present present.

  • 05:37 - 05:39

You'll notice that and this is what I'm using now.

  • 05:39 - 05:45

You have a lot of flexibility in so far as uh you're creative set

  • 05:45 - 05:48

that you get to work a lot of customization you can do here.

  • 05:48 - 05:52

Um and it's structured differently than it is in presi

  • 05:52 - 05:54

    video in the quick record

  • 05:54 - 05:57

and present present. You have topics and sub topics.

  • 05:57 - 05:59

Um Those are the planets right there.

  • 05:59 - 06:02

See those those round things are called planets.

  • 06:02 - 06:07

Um That's figurative, not literal and they're round, they could be square,

  • 06:07 - 06:09

    you make the choice there.

  • 06:09 - 06:13

Um and they sort of gives people cognitive anchors about where you're going in

  • 06:13 - 06:16

your presentation and this one I have the style thing we already talked about

  • 06:17 - 06:19

color and so forth. That's where all that style stuff was.

  • 06:19 - 06:21

I talked about some of the templates.

  • 06:21 - 06:23

I talked about some of the choices you get to

  • 06:23 - 06:26

make and now we're down here in the present,

  • 06:26 - 06:27

present down there at the bottom.

  • 06:28 - 06:33

Um It's structured then that if you had stuff to say inside of that topic,

  • 06:33 - 06:35

you'd have another set and those would because sub

  • 06:35 - 06:38

topics and again they'd show up as circles.

  • 06:38 - 06:41

If you're using a square, they'd show up as squares.

  • 06:41 - 06:47

Um but those are, that's the planet format. You could also do it to choose

  • 06:47 - 06:51

a topic and then a page and a page goes full screen.

  • 06:51 - 06:55

I wouldn't be here. You would see just the screen and the visual that I have.

  • 06:55 - 06:56

    There are the text

  • 06:57 - 06:59

that's intended to accentuate or if you want to

  • 06:59 - 07:02

give yourself a break from being on the screen,

  • 07:02 - 07:04

    that's what you would use.

  • 07:04 - 07:09

Um All of these are really handy. Um but think of the topic and subtopic,

  • 07:10 - 07:13

That's the structure or topic and page.

  • 07:13 - 07:17

You can mix it up, you can do topic, subtopic and page if you like.

  • 07:17 - 07:22

It really depends on what you want to do. Um to organize this work.

  • 07:22 - 07:26

Um or I should mention this to, there's a ton of templates out there.

  • 07:26 - 07:28

I think there's like 25 different templates and

  • 07:28 - 07:31

those can these templates can all be customized,

  • 07:31 - 07:34

you can swap out the color, you can swap out the font,

  • 07:34 - 07:36

images, whatever you want to do.

  • 07:36 - 07:37

    It's it's limitless. Really?

  • 07:38 - 07:41

Okay, so when I'm planning out my

  • 07:42 - 07:43

    present presents,

  • 07:43 - 07:46

that will be turned into videos like I did here. I'll

  • 07:46 - 07:48

do what do I want in the overview?

  • 07:48 - 07:50

What are the words and what are the images that I want there?

  • 07:50 - 07:52

I'll put that in my in my sheets.

  • 07:52 - 07:58

I do my topics. What is the title? What is the the body text and what images do I want?

  • 07:58 - 08:02

And do I want them animated in any way? Do I want them to fade in or fade out?

  • 08:02 - 08:07

Do I want them to zoom in or zoom out? It really depends on what you want to do.

  • 08:07 - 08:09

But indicating those things ahead of time can be

  • 08:09 - 08:12

super helpful to the work that you're doing.

  • 08:12 - 08:18

Alright. I'll just show you that really up close for a second, positive, you like?

  • 08:18 - 08:23

Um these links to these templates will be down below in the description,

  • 08:23 - 08:25

so feel free to use them

  • 08:26 - 08:27

    anyway,

  • 08:27 - 08:31

I just want to thank you so much for your time and um this gives

  • 08:31 - 08:35

you a nice start for thinking about your designs and how to get going with them

  • 08:35 - 08:37

and how to plot out your content

  • 08:37 - 08:43

for now. I'm sure you've got it and have fun creating everyone. Bye bye.
