Hi, my name is Mackenzie. My project is on the PMU industry.
- 00:05 - 00:08
Before I really get into showing you my presentation,
- 00:08 - 00:13
I'm just going to kind of go over it and tell you everything about it in my process.
- 00:13 - 00:15
Um so to become my presentation,
- 00:15 - 00:20
I kind of explain to you guys about what PMU is what it stands for.
- 00:20 - 00:25
Um and I also explain like what the farms do, like how they collect their urine,
- 00:25 - 00:27
how they function
- 00:27 - 00:28
um
- 00:29 - 00:33
and how slash what medicines and treatments they produce.
- 00:34 - 00:41
Um Then I go on to my next slide, which is about the abuse the animals face,
- 00:41 - 00:45
which connected into the last section of my last one
- 00:45 - 00:46
um
- 00:46 - 00:51
in regards to the environments that the horses live in slash
- 00:51 - 00:53
how the farmers treat them.
- 00:54 - 00:55
Um,
- 00:55 - 00:59
I provide lots of pictures and I also explain
- 00:59 - 01:02
what happens after these horses leave these farms.
- 01:03 - 01:07
Then in my third section, I go on to talk about the treatments,
- 01:07 - 01:11
which I put medicine in the parentheses to kind of
- 01:11 - 01:14
as like a sarcasm thing to kind of let you know that
- 01:16 - 01:20
I don't believe they work as well as what the doctors and pharmaceutical companies.
- 01:20 - 01:22
Um I want you to think
- 01:23 - 01:25
So in that section,
- 01:25 - 01:30
I explain what the estrogens are in these medications because they're not
- 01:30 - 01:36
the same as the estrogen that our human bodies normally make.
- 01:36 - 01:40
I also explain how our bodies process these different estrogens as
- 01:40 - 01:43
well as list a few of the side effects and talk
- 01:44 - 01:50
um about them as well as providing a link that goes a lot more in depth into them.
- 01:50 - 01:55
My next one is alternatives to the medications because
- 01:55 - 01:58
if I'm providing you with information on why you shouldn't
- 01:59 - 01:59
be taking these,
- 02:00 - 02:02
then I figure I should probably give you some sort
- 02:02 - 02:04
of alternative instead of just saying don't take these.
- 02:05 - 02:06
Um
- 02:06 - 02:09
so in particular, I go on about the bioidentical estrogens
- 02:10 - 02:16
which are made from plants and actually are altered to the individual,
- 02:16 - 02:21
um which I will go on to talk about later once I present my project.
- 02:21 - 02:26
So my fifth section goes on to talk about um
- 02:27 - 02:30
the people who are already trying to take action and
- 02:31 - 02:34
help these mirrors and get rid of the PMU industry
- 02:34 - 02:36
in particular. I talked about
- 02:36 - 02:38
one um
- 02:38 - 02:42
rescue and their operations as well as the
- 02:42 - 02:45
resources they provide to the communities around them.
- 02:45 - 02:48
And then in my last little section,
- 02:48 - 02:52
I just explained how you can help and I throughout this project,
- 02:52 - 02:55
I give you lots of different
- 02:55 - 02:58
links that go more in depth to what I'm talking about because
- 02:58 - 03:00
I don't want to bore everyone with just tons of information.
- 03:01 - 03:06
Um so my intended audience is the general public as well as women
- 03:06 - 03:10
who may be deciding on a hormone replacement therapy to be taking.
- 03:10 - 03:13
Um I provided a lot of just general information
- 03:13 - 03:15
about a lot of different aspects of the PMU
- 03:15 - 03:18
industry to give someone who may not have any
- 03:18 - 03:21
idea what the PMU industry is a good understanding on
- 03:21 - 03:23
what it is, how it functions,
- 03:23 - 03:26
what medications come out of it and all that sort of stuff.
- 03:27 - 03:29
Um I also provide a lot of information on what these drugs do
- 03:29 - 03:33
to your body and what is inside of them as well as alternatives,
- 03:33 - 03:36
which would connect to the women who are deciding on these treatments.
- 03:36 - 03:41
So my thesis is the pregnant mare urine industry causes unnecessary harm
- 03:41 - 03:44
to mares and foals as well as unnecessary side effects to women,
- 03:44 - 03:46
which could be eliminated through utilizing
- 03:46 - 03:48
other forms of hormone replacement therapies.
- 03:49 - 03:51
I hope that that was pretty clear through how
- 03:51 - 03:53
I formatted everything and all the information I provided,
- 03:53 - 03:56
but if it isn't, I would really like to know.
- 03:56 - 04:00
Um so lastly the design challenges that I faced
- 04:00 - 04:03
were I originally wanted to do a brochure,
- 04:03 - 04:03
just
- 04:04 - 04:06
especially since I was like focusing on
- 04:06 - 04:08
giving lots of information quickly to people
- 04:09 - 04:09
um
- 04:11 - 04:15
and not just got kind of cluttered because I had way too much
- 04:15 - 04:20
information and way too many like photos and everything to share with the
- 04:20 - 04:22
readers and viewers.
- 04:22 - 04:25
So then I opted out for this present design,
- 04:25 - 04:27
which I think looks a lot more organized
- 04:27 - 04:31
and provides a lot more information to the people
- 04:31 - 04:35
and I hope maybe makes my thesis and purpose clear.
- 04:37 - 04:40
Okay, so now I'm going to kind of go into my presentation.
- 04:40 - 04:44
My birds decided to be very noisy during my first section of this,
- 04:44 - 04:45
so I hope you can hear it.
- 04:46 - 04:48
Um but I did change locations,
- 04:48 - 04:51
so hopefully you can hear me and I hope you can hear me in the last section.
- 04:51 - 04:58
Okay, so what is PMU PMU is the abbreviation for the pregnant mare urine industry.
- 04:58 - 05:02
This includes not only the farms that housed the horses and collect the urine,
- 05:02 - 05:04
but also the laboratories and the
- 05:04 - 05:07
pharmaceutical companies that create PMU medication.
- 05:08 - 05:11
So as I stated earlier, they create medications.
- 05:11 - 05:13
So large pharmaceutical companies in particular,
- 05:13 - 05:18
Fizer utilize the strong components that come along with pregnant
- 05:18 - 05:22
mare urine to create treatments known as hormone replacement therapies,
- 05:22 - 05:25
which are commonly called H.
- 05:25 - 05:27
R. T. If you're doing some more research.
- 05:27 - 05:30
Um So these treatments are really for women who have lowered estrogen
- 05:30 - 05:36
levels in particular those who are going through the post menopausal stage.
- 05:37 - 05:39
So how do they collect a urine?
- 05:40 - 05:44
These farms house these pregnant mares and tiny little stalls
- 05:45 - 05:49
um and have them stand there and collect their urine.
- 05:49 - 05:51
They have like a little contraption on them,
- 05:51 - 05:54
a full body harnesses what I what they are and that's what I call them.
- 05:54 - 05:56
In the rest of this presentation.
- 05:56 - 06:02
They utilize gravity to take the urine and drain into a
- 06:02 - 06:05
like jug, which they then drain into buckets
- 06:05 - 06:12
and then put into large containers. Um To give to these pharmaceutical companies.
- 06:14 - 06:16
Next, we're gonna talk about the abuse.
- 06:16 - 06:20
Um So first we're gonna talk about the stalls that they're in.
- 06:20 - 06:25
They're in very tiny stalls which don't allow them to move around or lay down at all,
- 06:26 - 06:28
Usually when mayors are pregnant,
- 06:28 - 06:32
they need a lot more room because not only is it harder than
- 06:32 - 06:36
harder for them to make tight turns or move just because of the
- 06:37 - 06:39
folds that are in their bellies.
- 06:39 - 06:40
Um,
- 06:40 - 06:42
but they also need to move and have
- 06:42 - 06:45
constant exercise because they can get what's called edema
- 06:46 - 06:51
um and they also need to lay down with the extra weight on them. So yeah.
- 06:51 - 06:56
Um these mirrors are also constantly bread while they're at these farms.
- 06:56 - 06:59
So very quickly after, you know, they have the foals,
- 06:59 - 07:03
they are again bread until they are deemed unusable.
- 07:03 - 07:05
So as well as these stalls,
- 07:05 - 07:08
they are strapped to the full body harnesses which I talked about earlier.
- 07:08 - 07:14
These harnesses, I do have pictures more pictures of later in the picture section.
- 07:14 - 07:14
Um,
- 07:15 - 07:17
but they cause a lot of discomfort to the mirrors
- 07:17 - 07:20
and they can ask actually like rub and cause like
- 07:20 - 07:24
skin conditions which could negatively affect the mirrors,
- 07:25 - 07:27
which they do it negatively affect the mirrors.
- 07:28 - 07:31
So the farms, I also found out during my research
- 07:32 - 07:35
control the amount of water these horses drinks so they don't provide them
- 07:35 - 07:40
with adequate amounts just to make the strong urine even stronger um,
- 07:40 - 07:42
to give to these pharmaceutical companies.
- 07:43 - 07:47
So what happens after mayors are deemed unusable.
- 07:47 - 07:49
So once these mayors are deemed unusable,
- 07:49 - 07:53
they are then sent to auctions and inevitably most of these mayors
- 07:54 - 07:57
actually get shipped to Japan and china in these
- 07:57 - 08:02
tiny crates alive to get slaughtered for food purposes.
- 08:02 - 08:06
Only a very select few of the folds that come
- 08:06 - 08:09
out of the PMU industry are actually kept um,
- 08:09 - 08:13
to replace some areas that are old and deemed unusable or
- 08:13 - 08:16
studs for later use for breeding.
- 08:17 - 08:20
Okay, so now here are some pictures.
- 08:20 - 08:26
So this top left picture just shows a horse and a harness that has, you know,
- 08:26 - 08:28
red raw some spots on her
- 08:29 - 08:32
and you can like see like the upper hip, the lower hip
- 08:33 - 08:37
and some of the like her her coat condition. It's not good at all.
- 08:37 - 08:38
So it just shows, you know,
- 08:38 - 08:43
there's nutrition as well as environmental factors that are playing um,
- 08:43 - 08:44
into her well being.
- 08:45 - 08:46
So then on
- 08:47 - 08:49
the, this picture, right to the right,
- 08:49 - 08:53
it shows one of the harnesses that these horses are strapped to
- 08:54 - 08:57
these, this bottom one and this one to the left or from the same farm.
- 08:57 - 09:00
So then you can see how they're strapped to the horses.
- 09:00 - 09:01
It doesn't show the top,
- 09:01 - 09:06
which is like kind of a mesh covering on top of the horse just to hold and
- 09:06 - 09:10
or to be able to hold the way of the year. And that is in these bottles.
- 09:10 - 09:12
Um, I, the link down below
- 09:12 - 09:15
just is where I got these photos and it provides a lot more if you
- 09:15 - 09:19
want to go see some different photos of the different aspects of these farms.
- 09:22 - 09:27
All right. So then the medicine that is created from the mayor you're in.
- 09:27 - 09:33
There's a few known as the print maxi Prep, Oprah McQuay and Premarin and Dave.
- 09:33 - 09:36
So the picture to the right is actually of a premiere in paste.
- 09:37 - 09:42
Um But these medications can also come in pills and patches.
- 09:42 - 09:46
So as I stated earlier in my presentation these medications
- 09:46 - 09:49
are prescribed to women whose bodies do not produce enough estrogen
- 09:49 - 09:52
um to fight off just some of the symptoms of menopause.
- 09:52 - 09:56
These medications don't actually take care of the full
- 09:56 - 09:58
aspect of the woman and what she's dealing with.
- 09:58 - 10:02
It only counteracts just some of the aspects.
- 10:03 - 10:04
So
- 10:04 - 10:06
at what cost
- 10:06 - 10:08
do these medicines provide relief?
- 10:09 - 10:12
So these drugs are known as C. E. S.
- 10:12 - 10:16
Which are conjunctivitis equine oh estrogens which are not the
- 10:16 - 10:20
same as the estrogens that the woman's body naturally produces.
- 10:20 - 10:22
So when our bodies
- 10:22 - 10:24
um find something that they think is foreign,
- 10:24 - 10:27
they're going to attack it and it's going to cause
- 10:27 - 10:30
um like increases and
- 10:30 - 10:33
stuff like heart attack, thrombosis and breast cancer.
- 10:33 - 10:37
Um Those are actually pretty common increases from these
- 10:37 - 10:39
equine oh, estrogens.
- 10:39 - 10:44
So the link below can give you a lot more information on these estrogens
- 10:45 - 10:49
as well as other information on the other aspects of these
- 10:49 - 10:50
um treatments.
- 10:51 - 10:55
During my research it was pretty hard for me to find different studies
- 10:55 - 11:00
on the Premarin or just PMU drugs in general and how they worked.
- 11:00 - 11:02
There was one that I found that took place
- 11:02 - 11:04
in 2000 and two by the women's health initiative.
- 11:04 - 11:08
But it was quickly shut down by the government because it showed
- 11:08 - 11:12
how these medications had a lot more negative effects than positive effects.
- 11:12 - 11:15
So they shut that down pretty quick.
- 11:17 - 11:20
So here are just a few of the side effects that come from these medications.
- 11:20 - 11:23
Um It's breast cancer, heart attack, vaginal bleeding, difficulty, breathing,
- 11:23 - 11:25
sneezing and body pain.
- 11:25 - 11:28
Those are just a very um select few.
- 11:28 - 11:33
The link I have on the right goes to the Maya clinic which provides a
- 11:33 - 11:36
way bigger list in more in depth information
- 11:36 - 11:39
on the side effects of these medications.
- 11:41 - 11:43
So alternatives.
- 11:43 - 11:45
Um one alternative that I'm really going to be
- 11:45 - 11:48
talking about is the bio identical hormone replacement.
- 11:48 - 11:53
Um These treatments are created from plants in particular soybeans and wild yams.
- 11:53 - 11:56
So scientists are actually able to process and
- 11:56 - 11:58
alter the makeup of these plants so that they
- 11:58 - 12:04
can create a hormone that is an exact replica of the hormone in the woman's body.
- 12:04 - 12:08
So these can be altered to every patient so that it is almost like a
- 12:09 - 12:12
perfect match to her.
- 12:12 - 12:15
And since they're a perfect match to her actual hormones,
- 12:15 - 12:18
her body is going to recognize them as the
- 12:18 - 12:21
hormone and non foreign invader which is going to
- 12:21 - 12:26
lead to um less side effects and your body is actually going to be able to utilize it.
- 12:26 - 12:30
Whereas the equine estrogens are not the same and your
- 12:30 - 12:32
body is going to kind of try and attack them.
- 12:34 - 12:39
So here's just a good informational video by dr Walton G smith.
- 12:39 - 12:43
It just really goes into depth about the bio estrogens, how they're used,
- 12:43 - 12:48
how your body can process them and just how they're very effective and good,
- 12:48 - 12:50
good alternative.
- 12:54 - 12:54
Okay,
- 12:54 - 12:58
so there are lots of people um in our
- 12:58 - 13:01
world today that are fighting against the PMU industry
- 13:02 - 13:03
and trying to help.
- 13:03 - 13:06
But one of the biggest operations that I came across
- 13:06 - 13:10
um was this group known as the equine advocates.
- 13:10 - 13:11
So they're
- 13:12 - 13:13
they're a very big operation.
- 13:13 - 13:17
They save lots of horses from the PMU industry which the photo
- 13:17 - 13:22
I provided below actually is from their farm and are all horses and
- 13:23 - 13:28
um there are babies which are now grown um that have been saved from these PMU farms.
- 13:29 - 13:35
So the goal of um their rescue is not just to save the horses,
- 13:35 - 13:39
but it's to educate the general population about PMU industry
- 13:39 - 13:44
and other Ikhwan abuse that is going on and how that you can help.
- 13:45 - 13:49
They have lots of lessons as well as guest
- 13:49 - 13:53
speakers that come and educate whoever wants to see on
- 13:54 - 13:59
issues of the PMU industry as well as other aspects like I mentioned earlier.
- 14:00 - 14:02
So lastly how can we help?
- 14:02 - 14:06
So one of the biggest things that we can do is just educate ourselves on the
- 14:06 - 14:10
working of these PMU farms as well as the drugs produced and how they affect us
- 14:11 - 14:14
as well as educating our friends and family because honestly
- 14:14 - 14:17
knowledge is power and if more people know
- 14:18 - 14:21
then it's going to become apparent the abuse and negative effects
- 14:21 - 14:24
that come from this and it can be shut down.
- 14:25 - 14:28
Um So the next two ways that we can help kind of go hand in hand,
- 14:28 - 14:30
which is boycotting fighter products and talking
- 14:30 - 14:33
to your doctor about possible alternatives.
- 14:33 - 14:36
So by boycotting these products, I mean if you
- 14:37 - 14:40
are a woman who is needing these hormone replacement therapies,
- 14:40 - 14:45
maybe try and look into other alternatives than these PMU created drugs
- 14:45 - 14:48
because if people are not taking them and not buying them,
- 14:48 - 14:49
then they
- 14:50 - 14:53
you know, are kinda gonna have to shut down if they lose that support.
- 14:54 - 15:00
Um another way that you can help is also by just supporting or donating.
