Hi everyone, my name is Katherine Lozano.
- 00:05 - 00:08
However, please feel, please feel free to call me Kat.
- 00:09 - 00:13
There has been times where my full name is said
- 00:14 - 00:15
and I think I'm in trouble.
- 00:15 - 00:19
Um I am 28 years old and I currently live
- 00:19 - 00:20
in whittier California.
- 00:21 - 00:25
Um I am the assistant director for a small school
- 00:25 - 00:27
in brea named CC's Learning Center.
- 00:28 - 00:34
Um I have worked recently, I am sorry, I like
- 00:34 - 00:38
to write down my, my answers to the questions before
- 00:39 - 00:41
recording or anything like that, so if you see me
- 00:41 - 00:44
looking up because I'm reading my notes, um I recently
- 00:45 - 00:48
actually moved back into the classroom as we are in
- 00:48 - 00:51
the hiring process for some teachers, so if you know
- 00:52 - 00:54
anybody send them my way, I need a two year
- 00:54 - 00:54
old teacher.
- 00:55 - 00:58
Um I have worked with Children from birth to school
- 00:58 - 01:02
age for about 11 years now and it's the best
- 01:03 - 01:08
thing ever within those years, I have been uh moved
- 01:08 - 01:12
up the ladder several times from assistant assistant teacher to
- 01:12 - 01:17
head teacher and as I just said, assistant director um
- 01:17 - 01:21
while working with Children, I have gained and shared many
- 01:21 - 01:28
experiences, some including developing a curriculum, creating a stimulating classroom
- 01:29 - 01:34
and nutrition that has been a big one uh that
- 01:34 - 01:38
families have really dealt with, especially with the pandemic, so
- 01:38 - 01:44
that has very, has piqued my interest um one that
- 01:44 - 01:47
I actually didn't write down though, but I would like
- 01:47 - 01:52
to mention is I have recently got into moving classrooms
- 01:52 - 01:58
around, so basically setting up areas that allow Children too
- 02:00 - 02:05
stimulate their senses and um the best way possible with
- 02:06 - 02:08
the, the areas around them.
- 02:09 - 02:13
Um I have to, associate degrees, one in child development
- 02:14 - 02:17
and one in social behaviors both from Rio hondo college
- 02:18 - 02:21
and then I have my bachelors degree from the University
- 02:22 - 02:26
of Arizona Global campus um in child development as well.
- 02:26 - 02:29
And then I'm currently working on my masters, like all
- 02:29 - 02:35
of us and I'm almost done um upon completing my
- 02:35 - 02:38
Master's degree, my goal is to become apparent educator or
- 02:38 - 02:39
curriculum specialist.
- 02:40 - 02:43
Um like I had mentioned before, those are my two
- 02:43 - 02:43
favorite things.
- 02:44 - 02:49
So when I'm not at work or studying, you can
- 02:50 - 02:51
find me at three of my favorite places.
- 02:52 - 02:55
Well not anymore because the season's over, but dodger games,
- 02:55 - 03:00
um Disneyland and at home, I am in the process
- 03:01 - 03:06
of planning a wedding, so trying to stay stress for
- 03:07 - 03:11
you with school work and this, uh, the video that
- 03:11 - 03:14
I actually decided to watch was kids take charge.
- 03:15 - 03:18
Um as educators, I think it's important that we encourage
- 03:19 - 03:22
motivate and inspire the Children that we work with on
- 03:23 - 03:23
a daily basis.
- 03:24 - 03:31
Children have the mindset of, I can't as the video
- 03:31 - 03:37
mentioned. Um however, there should be no such word, especially
- 03:38 - 03:38
with working with Children.
- 03:39 - 03:43
Um, they shouldn't be told no or you can't to
- 03:43 - 03:44
do that.
- 03:44 - 03:49
Um Karen sethi did just the opposite in that video.
- 03:50 - 03:53
She had Children believe in themselves and at a young
- 03:54 - 03:58
age, sorry, flipping the page and at a young age
- 03:59 - 04:00
know that they can take charge.
- 04:01 - 04:04
Um This was an inspiring video to me as we
- 04:05 - 04:08
want Children to feel confident and powerful when in the
- 04:08 - 04:10
classroom and even outside of the classroom.
- 04:11 - 04:15
Um There are times in my classroom right now, as
- 04:15 - 04:18
I said, I'm back in the classroom where Children will
- 04:18 - 04:21
say I can't do this or I don't want to
- 04:21 - 04:22
do this.
- 04:22 - 04:27
Um but rather than doing it for them, I guide
- 04:28 - 04:33
them with open ended questions or uh just assisting them
- 04:33 - 04:34
with some things.
- 04:35 - 04:38
For example, I had a little boy today put take
- 04:39 - 04:41
out all his stuff from his lunch and just through
- 04:42 - 04:44
the lunch pail and said, I can't pick it up
- 04:45 - 04:48
and I kind of just looked at him and said,
- 04:48 - 04:51
you can pick it up if you need help, you
- 04:51 - 04:52
can ask for help.
- 04:54 - 04:58
So after he, sorry, my video paused, I don't know,
- 04:58 - 04:58
bad connection.
- 04:59 - 05:03
Um but after he picked it up and put everything
- 05:04 - 05:07
away, I praised him and I told him good job.
- 05:08 - 05:11
Um so I just want Children to know that they
- 05:11 - 05:14
can do things um even with a little bit of
- 05:14 - 05:16
help and on their own.
- 05:17 - 05:22
Um and the last section of my introduction, I believe
- 05:22 - 05:27
there are various ways educators and leaders can make positive
- 05:27 - 05:28
differences in the world of education.
- 05:30 - 05:34
Um as an educator and a leader myself, some ways
- 05:34 - 05:38
I would implement a positive difference is just having a
- 05:38 - 05:41
positive nurturing and stimulating environment for the Children.
- 05:41 - 05:45
Uh it is very, very important that all Children and
- 05:45 - 05:49
families and staff feel welcomed and safe into the program
- 05:50 - 05:51
that you are in.
- 05:52 - 05:56
Um Another one is to create a diverse and inclusive
- 05:56 - 06:00
curriculum. We want to make sure that we are including
- 06:00 - 06:04
all special needs kids and all um values and beliefs
- 06:05 - 06:05
of families.
- 06:07 - 06:07
Uh huh.
- 06:08 - 06:08
Excuse me.
- 06:09 - 06:12
Um a third one is to appreciate and respect all
- 06:13 - 06:14
families and educators.
- 06:15 - 06:19
Um I think that's just a big one because it's
- 06:20 - 06:22
it's not easy to be apparent and it's not easy
- 06:23 - 06:24
to be a teacher.
- 06:24 - 06:29
Um so just having that positivity and motivation for both
- 06:30 - 06:31
sides is very, very critical.
- 06:32 - 06:38
Um Another one which I really strongly believe in is
- 06:38 - 06:43
having a strong communication and effective partnership between parents and
- 06:44 - 06:50
peers. Um it's always good to collaborate and communicate about
- 06:50 - 06:52
everything that's going on, so that way you guys are
- 06:52 - 06:57
on the same page, um that's there's a lot more
- 06:57 - 07:00
to that, but this would be a long video.
- 07:01 - 07:05
Um 1/4 1 would be having an open door policy
- 07:05 - 07:08
for parents I know with covid it has been hard
- 07:09 - 07:11
for some schools to have that interaction.
- 07:12 - 07:17
Um but just encouraging families to, you know, work at
- 07:17 - 07:20
home with their Children with what you're learning in the
- 07:20 - 07:23
classroom and all that fun stuff uh and then listening
- 07:23 - 07:26
to the, to the concerns or questions to, of families
- 07:27 - 07:28
if they have any.
- 07:28 - 07:34
Um And my 5th 1 or 6th 1, maybe I
- 07:34 - 07:35
lost count, sorry.
- 07:35 - 07:39
Uh, would be to just be available for those around
- 07:39 - 07:43
you. We never know what's going on in the lives
- 07:43 - 07:45
of our families, Children or our teachers.
- 07:46 - 07:50
Uh, so just being there to talk to or mentor
- 07:50 - 07:55
or guide is always just a plus, so I look
- 07:55 - 08:00
forward to learning with everybody and I'm pretty sure I've
- 08:01 - 08:04
had some of you guys in my previous classes, so
- 08:04 - 08:07
it is nice to see you again and we'll see
- 08:08 - 08:09
you for the next six weeks.
