Yeah I will never forget the time that my friends
- 00:03 - 00:06
and I discovered that we were required to take four
- 00:06 - 00:08
humanities courses in order to graduate at U.
- 00:09 - 00:09
N. C.
- 00:09 - 00:13
A. We did not understand what was so important That
- 00:14 - 00:16
it took four classes to teach us instead of one.
- 00:17 - 00:22
Mhm. Okay after taking my fourth humanities course I now
- 00:22 - 00:24
realize why it's so important.
- 00:25 - 00:27
This is my opinion on why humanity is so important
- 00:28 - 00:35
and what it has done for me dad.
- 00:36 - 00:39
Yeah. When I first got to U.
- 00:39 - 00:42
n c a in 2008 I realized I was a
- 00:42 - 00:44
conservative going to a liberal arts school.
- 00:45 - 00:45
I had many questions.
- 00:46 - 00:48
And the one thing that still stands out to me
- 00:48 - 00:51
today is why are we taking four humanities courses?
- 00:52 - 00:52
Uh huh.
- 00:55 - 00:58
My first humanities class was in the spring of 2010
- 00:59 - 00:59
with Dr Long Blood.
- 01:00 - 01:02
I had hit a hard time in my life and
- 01:02 - 01:07
ended up having to take humanities 124 I ended up
- 01:07 - 01:10
retaking it with dr but so he was the one
- 01:11 - 01:13
who made me realize how important humanities was.
- 01:14 - 01:16
We wrote a paper on shame and took a walk
- 01:17 - 01:18
in a labyrinth to relate it to the readings we
- 01:19 - 01:19
were doing.
- 01:20 - 01:24
We read works like the bag of baga geeta, the
- 01:24 - 01:27
Iliad, the Trojan women and the epic of Gilgamesh, a
- 01:28 - 01:30
quote that started changing my life was a quote from
- 01:30 - 01:34
the Iliad, like the generations of leaves, the lives of
- 01:34 - 01:34
mortal men.
- 01:35 - 01:38
Now the wind scatters the old leaves across the earth.
- 01:39 - 01:41
Now the living timbers burst with the new buds and
- 01:42 - 01:43
spring comes around again.
- 01:44 - 01:47
And so with men, as one generation comes to life,
- 01:47 - 01:48
another dies away.
- 01:49 - 01:52
This quote made me realize that each generation plays an
- 01:52 - 01:55
important role and I wanted our generation to be the
- 01:55 - 01:56
one that made the difference.
- 02:00 - 02:02
So you may ask what has changed since my first
- 02:02 - 02:03
humanities class.
- 02:04 - 02:06
Well, I can honestly say that I realize nothing is
- 02:07 - 02:07
black and white.
- 02:08 - 02:10
There is so much gray in the world, you have
- 02:10 - 02:13
to be open to new ideas and concepts in order
- 02:13 - 02:13
to grow as a person.
- 02:14 - 02:17
I am no longer a conservative nor am I a
- 02:17 - 02:19
liberal. I can see and understand both sides.
- 02:20 - 02:22
I can have a civil conversation and learn things that
- 02:23 - 02:23
I did not know about.
- 02:24 - 02:27
It also allows me to teach others what I believe
- 02:28 - 02:31
and think without starting arguments, I am now a firm
- 02:32 - 02:35
believer in humanities and believes all colleges should have four
- 02:35 - 02:36
courses on it.
- 02:37 - 02:39
I came into this college with blinders on and I
- 02:39 - 02:41
will be leaving it with my eyes wide open.
- 02:45 - 02:47
You may ask how humanity has changed me.
- 02:47 - 02:49
It changed me in so many different ways.
- 02:50 - 02:50
It brought on.
- 02:50 - 02:53
So many open discussions by people of all different backgrounds
- 02:54 - 02:54
and majors.
- 02:55 - 02:59
People who would normally never crossed paths were forced to
- 02:59 - 03:01
have class or four together.
- 03:02 - 03:04
This allowed different opinions to be brought up.
- 03:04 - 03:07
It also made you think differently when reading these stories
- 03:07 - 03:07
for class.
- 03:08 - 03:11
It didn't help that all five of my professors made
- 03:11 - 03:11
it fun and enjoyable.
- 03:15 - 03:17
In 2012 I had to leave U.
- 03:17 - 03:17
N. C.
- 03:17 - 03:18
A. To attend some family problems.
- 03:19 - 03:21
I was always planning on coming back, but I was
- 03:22 - 03:24
never sure when this was my first semester back since
- 03:25 - 03:28
I left in 2012, I am now a mother of
- 03:28 - 03:28
two Children.
- 03:29 - 03:31
Thanks to my newest mindset from my first three humanities
- 03:32 - 03:34
courses, I have taught my Children to be open minded
- 03:35 - 03:37
to not look at race or gender and to try
- 03:37 - 03:39
to be the very best person they can be.
- 03:41 - 03:44
This last humanities class made me realize how important an
- 03:44 - 03:44
open mind is.
- 03:45 - 03:47
I have listened to our lectures and read our readings.
- 03:48 - 03:50
I would go into work the following day and start
- 03:50 - 03:51
conversations with my co workers.
- 03:53 - 03:55
So not only were we having discussions in class, but
- 03:55 - 03:57
I was also discussing them to people in my life
- 03:57 - 03:58
as well.
- 03:59 - 04:02
Thanks to learning about redlining, I am now able to
- 04:02 - 04:04
understand what is so important about the Black Lives Matter
- 04:05 - 04:07
movement and the changes that need to be made.
- 04:09 - 04:11
All four he made classes have taught us different time
- 04:12 - 04:15
periods, the ancient world, medieval and renaissance world, the modern
- 04:16 - 04:18
world and the critical perspectives on contemporary.
- 04:20 - 04:23
But they all taught me the same thing that we
- 04:23 - 04:29
need to accept everyone for their culture, race, gender and
- 04:29 - 04:32
identity. Who are we to judge someone else when we
- 04:32 - 04:33
ourselves are not perfect.
- 04:36 - 04:38
And this is one of my favorite quotes.
- 04:38 - 04:39
The end is never the end.
- 04:39 - 04:41
It's always the beginning of something
