Hello, my name is Lana Eden.
- 00:05 - 00:09
I am a current student at Brigham Young University, Idaho.
- 00:10 - 00:13
I am a marriage and family studies major.
- 00:14 - 00:19
And today I will be talking about the internship that I completed.
- 00:20 - 00:23
How I found it, what my responsibilities were,
- 00:23 - 00:28
how I benefited from my internship connections that I made
- 00:28 - 00:33
during this semester and how you can contact this same information
- 00:33 - 00:36
or internship um
- 00:36 - 00:37
to set
- 00:37 - 00:40
up your own personal internship.
- 00:40 - 00:44
Um So my internship that I did was working with
- 00:44 - 00:51
individuals with disabilities at turn community services located in Provo,
- 00:51 - 00:52
Utah.
- 00:56 - 00:58
How did I find this internship?
- 00:58 - 01:03
So I found this internship by first looking at different
- 01:03 - 01:08
places to work with individuals with disabilities in Utah.
- 01:08 - 01:09
I
- 01:10 - 01:11
then
- 01:11 - 01:16
reached out to them and asked them if I could do an internship
- 01:16 - 01:21
and also work with them as a job after completing my internship.
- 01:22 - 01:26
Um I saw that turn community services was hiring full time
- 01:27 - 01:28
and
- 01:28 - 01:30
I reached out to them.
- 01:30 - 01:34
We did an interview and I explained that I would
- 01:34 - 01:37
love to do an internship and have a job.
- 01:37 - 01:39
I ended up being accepted
- 01:40 - 01:45
and I had paid training while doing this internship.
- 01:48 - 01:51
So my responsibilities that I had were
- 01:51 - 01:54
to create positive relationships with the clients.
- 01:55 - 01:57
A lot of the clients look up to you
- 01:58 - 02:02
as a mentor and a friend and
- 02:03 - 02:05
you will be helping them every day.
- 02:06 - 02:12
Um Each of the clients get to pick their staff for the day and who they want to be with.
- 02:12 - 02:17
And the more that you try to make a positive relationship with them,
- 02:17 - 02:23
the more able you will be able to make a positive impact in their life.
- 02:23 - 02:25
It's just general respect to
- 02:26 - 02:30
treat them with kindness and be patient with them.
- 02:30 - 02:31
Um
- 02:32 - 02:33
I
- 02:33 - 02:39
had the responsibility of encouraging them as they worked on their goals.
- 02:39 - 02:41
So each client had
- 02:42 - 02:47
an emotional social, intellectual or physical that they were working on.
- 02:48 - 02:51
This looked like learning how to count money,
- 02:51 - 02:52
um
- 02:52 - 02:56
learning how to walk around better or
- 02:57 - 02:58
use
- 02:58 - 03:02
maybe their legs or arms or hands um
- 03:03 - 03:09
talking appropriately with one another and staying on appropriate topics
- 03:09 - 03:14
as well as learning how to handle challenging emotions that they have.
- 03:14 - 03:17
Um Some of the clients have a harder time
- 03:17 - 03:22
with their emotions just because they have a disability. So
- 03:23 - 03:23
um
- 03:24 - 03:25
it's important,
- 03:25 - 03:29
it was important for me to remain patient with them
- 03:29 - 03:34
and to continue to encourage them even if there was setbacks.
- 03:34 - 03:35
Um
- 03:35 - 03:41
I was in charge of teaching classes about art, transportation,
- 03:41 - 03:46
money movement, such as dance classes, sugar fits country dancing,
- 03:46 - 03:50
healthy choices such as learning how to make
- 03:50 - 03:54
smoothie or healthy meals and social skills classes.
- 03:55 - 03:55
Um
- 03:55 - 04:01
I was in charge of taking care of the hygiene of the clients each day,
- 04:01 - 04:04
which included changing them, helping them in the bathroom,
- 04:05 - 04:07
making sure they were washing their hands,
- 04:07 - 04:12
helping them with teeth and overall maintaining a clean environment.
- 04:13 - 04:13
Um
- 04:14 - 04:18
I was in charge of helping transport clients to
- 04:18 - 04:21
activities that we did in the day.
- 04:21 - 04:25
So we would go to museums, parks, we would go swimming,
- 04:25 - 04:28
um go to get cookies or soda
- 04:29 - 04:29
and
- 04:30 - 04:34
I needed to make sure that the clients were safe and I was driving correctly.
- 04:35 - 04:40
I also helped transport clients to their homes at the end of the day. So
- 04:40 - 04:44
I needed to learn where they each lived and
- 04:44 - 04:49
um the route that I would take while taking the clients home at the end of the day.
- 04:50 - 04:50
Um
- 04:51 - 04:58
I was in charge of just in general supervising the clients during activities
- 04:58 - 05:01
away from the facility as well as at the
- 05:01 - 05:04
facility just making sure they aren't wandering off.
- 05:04 - 05:06
They aren't talking to strange people,
- 05:06 - 05:09
making sure they aren't falling down.
- 05:09 - 05:10
Um
- 05:11 - 05:14
Not taking things that they shouldn't be and
- 05:14 - 05:17
helping them if they needed to purchase things,
- 05:17 - 05:20
I also needed to um
- 05:20 - 05:24
make sure that everyone was safe and if there
- 05:24 - 05:27
was a medical incident such as someone falling,
- 05:27 - 05:27
that
- 05:27 - 05:29
I was helping take care of them,
- 05:32 - 05:36
how did I benefit at the site that I served at? So
- 05:37 - 05:40
the site I served at helped give me
- 05:40 - 05:46
training such as CPR first aid, food handling
- 05:46 - 05:52
and helping clients with challenging behaviors. All of these trainings were paid.
- 05:52 - 05:53
Um
- 05:54 - 05:55
I
- 05:55 - 06:01
felt like all of the staff were very helpful and patient while
- 06:01 - 06:05
I was learning how to work with and serve the individuals.
- 06:06 - 06:08
Um personally, it was
- 06:08 - 06:11
a joy to help
- 06:11 - 06:14
the clients and become their friends. I
- 06:14 - 06:18
developed a love for each of them and found
- 06:18 - 06:23
happiness at work just being around them each day.
- 06:23 - 06:24
Um
- 06:25 - 06:30
This internship really helped me to develop my leadership skills by teaching
- 06:30 - 06:37
classes and help guide individuals during activities and out in the community.
- 06:37 - 06:38
I
- 06:38 - 06:46
improve my skill sets of CPR and first aid and working with people in general,
- 06:46 - 06:48
which has been super helpful
- 06:49 - 06:51
as a helping professional,
- 06:52 - 06:54
important connection. So
- 06:55 - 07:02
while I was taking this internship, I was also taking a religious class and
- 07:02 - 07:09
I made the connection of how much God truly loves each one of us. Every person that
- 07:09 - 07:14
I was working with had different struggles, different likes,
- 07:14 - 07:16
they were each unique and
- 07:17 - 07:21
um we're working on different goals and I cared about each one
- 07:21 - 07:27
of them and wanted to make a positive impact in their life.
- 07:27 - 07:28
Um
- 07:28 - 07:30
It reminded me that
- 07:31 - 07:35
how much God truly knows each one of us.
- 07:35 - 07:41
He knows our struggles pains, our trials, our strengths, our weaknesses,
- 07:41 - 07:46
and he will always be there to support us and lift us up.
- 07:46 - 07:49
He will continuously help us and
- 07:50 - 07:53
love us beyond. We could ever imagine
- 07:54 - 07:54
there
- 07:56 - 08:00
Um So contact information,
- 08:00 - 08:02
I went ahead and put
- 08:02 - 08:03
the
- 08:03 - 08:08
number of the turn community services office.
- 08:08 - 08:14
This is a great number to call because they will be setting up interviews,
- 08:14 - 08:19
doing trainings, they know the different locations that are hiring.
- 08:19 - 08:23
Um There's different locations such as
- 08:23 - 08:29
Provo, Springville, American Fork and other places in Utah. So
- 08:31 - 08:35
calling them can help you find opportunities for an internship
- 08:36 - 08:37
or work.
- 08:37 - 08:38
Um
- 08:39 - 08:42
And then I went ahead and put the
- 08:43 - 08:47
email of my personal internship coordinator.
- 08:47 - 08:50
She is in HR and her name is Brenda Harris.
- 08:50 - 08:52
So her email is Brenda
- 08:53 - 08:56
Harris at turn dreams dot org.
- 08:56 - 08:57
Um
- 08:58 - 09:04
I'm so happy to have this time to talk to you each about this internship.
- 09:04 - 09:06
I hope it was helpful
- 09:06 - 09:09
and I wish all of you luck as you
- 09:09 - 09:13
are beginning your own journeys of finding an internship.
