Hello, everyone and welcome to Earth months Storytime Presented by
- 00:05 - 00:09
Riverside Public Utilities Today we're going to read Not for
- 00:10 - 00:10
me, please.
- 00:11 - 00:12
I choose to act green.
- 00:15 - 00:16
Not for me, please.
- 00:16 - 00:21
I choose to act Green Written by Maria Godsey and
- 00:21 - 00:23
illustrated by Christoph J.
- 00:23 - 00:29
Kellner. There once was a day when I did an
- 00:29 - 00:32
act green a time when I thought things would always
- 00:32 - 00:32
stay clean.
- 00:33 - 00:36
I didn't think twice of the choices I made, the
- 00:36 - 00:38
impact they had or the damage that stayed.
- 00:39 - 00:42
My actions were based on the ease brought to me
- 00:42 - 00:45
with never much thought to our air, land or sea.
- 00:48 - 00:51
It can be difficult to understand the effect of our
- 00:51 - 00:54
actions on the environment, especially when we don't see the
- 00:54 - 00:56
damage or long term effects caused.
- 00:57 - 01:00
However, with awareness, this can change.
- 01:01 - 01:05
Understanding the interconnectedness and adjusting our way of living in
- 01:05 - 01:08
a way that is friendly to our environment and sustainable
- 01:09 - 01:12
for our planet means to think and act green.
- 01:16 - 01:19
But my thoughts around this changed in a flash when
- 01:20 - 01:22
I noticed the damage caused by our trash.
- 01:23 - 01:26
The sight of it caused a reaction in me and
- 01:26 - 01:28
all I could say was not for me, please.
- 01:30 - 01:36
Over 260 million tons of waste are generated every year
- 01:36 - 01:37
in the United States.
- 01:38 - 01:43
Globally, over 220 million tons of plastic are produced each
- 01:44 - 01:47
year. All of this waste adds up and pollutes our
- 01:48 - 01:51
environment, even if we don't see it all the time.
- 01:52 - 01:55
Did you know that every piece of plastic ever created
- 01:56 - 02:00
still exists today, with the exception of plastic that has
- 02:01 - 02:05
been incinerated, our use of plastic has gotten so out
- 02:05 - 02:08
of control that it is estimated there will be more
- 02:08 - 02:12
plastic by weight in our oceans than fish by the
- 02:12 - 02:13
year 2050.
- 02:15 - 02:21
Wow, I could not continue to live as I did.
- 02:22 - 02:25
Surely I could help out because I'm a strong kid.
- 02:26 - 02:29
From there, I decided that I will take action and
- 02:29 - 02:32
protecting our planet became my new passion.
- 02:33 - 02:36
You too, can help out with this phrase that I
- 02:36 - 02:40
found. Just say not for me, please, and stand your
- 02:40 - 02:41
own ground.
- 02:41 - 02:44
It may take some practice, but I'll show you how
- 02:45 - 02:45
and why.
- 02:45 - 02:48
It's important for us to act now.
- 02:53 - 02:55
Let's look at a straw that comes with the shake
- 02:55 - 02:56
now imagine the trip.
- 02:57 - 03:01
The straw will soon take most often are straws are
- 03:01 - 03:04
made out of plastic, and after one use their thrown
- 03:05 - 03:08
in a basket from the basket, they head to the
- 03:08 - 03:11
dump or the sea and become something known as marine
- 03:12 - 03:18
debris. These each day more than 500 million plastic straws
- 03:18 - 03:21
are used and discarded in the United States alone.
- 03:22 - 03:25
There's a lot of straws for just one country.
- 03:26 - 03:30
This all creates waste that ends up in landfills and
- 03:30 - 03:30
our oceans.
- 03:31 - 03:35
Just for the convenience of having the strong Marine to
- 03:35 - 03:40
breeze is human created waste that was deliberately or accidentally
- 03:41 - 03:46
been released in the Lake, Sea, ocean or waterway in
- 03:46 - 03:47
2000 and six.
- 03:47 - 03:52
The United Nations Environment Programme estimated that there are 46,000
- 03:54 - 03:59
pieces of floating plastic in every square mile of ocean.
- 04:01 - 04:02
That's a lot of plastic pieces.
- 04:08 - 04:11
Our oceans are filled with all sorts of stuff that
- 04:11 - 04:14
hurt our sea creatures and make their lives rough.
- 04:15 - 04:18
Poor turtles and fish mistake trash for their meal.
- 04:19 - 04:23
Imagine the pain that their tummies must feel or worse.
- 04:24 - 04:28
They get tangled in our careless muck around fins, heads
- 04:29 - 04:29
and legs.
- 04:30 - 04:32
There are nothing but stuck.
- 04:34 - 04:38
Did you know about one truckload of trash thrown into
- 04:39 - 04:40
our waters every minute.
- 04:41 - 04:45
This trash is captured by ocean currents and collects with
- 04:45 - 04:46
an ocean.
- 04:46 - 04:47
Geier's or vortexes.
- 04:49 - 04:52
Some guy wires have become so full of trash that
- 04:53 - 04:55
they have been nicknamed garbage patches.
- 04:56 - 05:00
The Great Pacific garbage patch is now three times the
- 05:00 - 05:01
size of France.
- 05:03 - 05:07
The trash thrown in our ocean doesn't just float on
- 05:07 - 05:12
its surface After sunlight, photo degrades the floating pieces of
- 05:12 - 05:14
plastic into small pieces.
- 05:15 - 05:21
Aquatic life and seabirds mistake these fragments microplastics for food.
- 05:21 - 05:28
And in just them, this one little straw is not
- 05:29 - 05:29
worth the high cost.
- 05:31 - 05:33
Why use things that harm or cause a great loss?
- 05:34 - 05:38
Here's where I'd say not for me, please, when asked,
- 05:39 - 05:41
I don't need a straw that will simply be trashed.
- 05:42 - 05:43
We all have a choice.
- 05:44 - 05:47
Let's do our small part to refuse to cause harm
- 05:48 - 05:50
and decide to act smart.
- 05:52 - 05:55
Unfortunately, our sea life and birds are not the only
- 05:56 - 05:57
ones ingesting plastic.
- 05:58 - 06:02
When we eat fish that have eaten plastic, this two
- 06:03 - 06:04
goes into our body.
- 06:05 - 06:09
Additionally, plastic casts frequently be found been found in many
- 06:09 - 06:11
brands of bottled water.
- 06:13 - 06:18
Did you know that 93% of Americans aged six or
- 06:18 - 06:21
older test positive for B P A.
- 06:21 - 06:22
A plastic chemical.
- 06:24 - 06:27
Also, some of the compounds found in plastic have been
- 06:28 - 06:31
found to alter hormones or have other potential human health
- 06:32 - 06:39
effects. Just think through your actions and the cause and
- 06:39 - 06:42
effect of waste and pollution and careless neglect.
- 06:44 - 06:46
Let's choose to recycle, reduce and reuse.
- 06:47 - 06:50
And with my strong phrase, there's no way we lose.
- 06:52 - 06:55
Here's some examples to show what I mean and how
- 06:55 - 06:58
you can join me and begin to act green.
- 07:00 - 07:05
Reduce, reuse and recycle, also known as the three R's,
- 07:05 - 07:11
are the main ways to practice environmentally responsible consumer behavior
- 07:13 - 07:15
when we aim to reduce the amount of waste we
- 07:15 - 07:21
produce the consumption of new resources, reuse as many items
- 07:21 - 07:24
as possible before replacing them and recycle.
- 07:25 - 07:28
We take action to protect our environment and act green.
- 07:33 - 07:35
Do you see all this trash scattered around?
- 07:36 - 07:38
Why would anyone throw their stuff on the ground?
- 07:39 - 07:42
Not for me, please, is what I choose to say
- 07:43 - 07:45
and pick up the litter to throw it away.
- 07:47 - 07:49
I choose to be mindful and sort through my trash,
- 07:50 - 07:52
recycling things like plastic or glass.
- 07:54 - 07:57
These can be turned into something brand new, like clothing,
- 07:58 - 08:00
park benches or even a shoe.
- 08:02 - 08:06
Recycling is the process of converting waste into new usable
- 08:07 - 08:07
materials and objects.
- 08:09 - 08:12
When we recycle, we reduce the need to consume Earth's
- 08:12 - 08:15
natural resources through mining and forestry.
- 08:16 - 08:20
Recycling helps ensure sustainable use of our limited resources.
- 08:21 - 08:25
There are many things that can be recycled metal, plastic,
- 08:25 - 08:27
glass, aluminum and paper.
- 08:28 - 08:30
It's important to be cautious that the items we buy
- 08:31 - 08:34
it, our materials that can be recycled and not just
- 08:34 - 08:35
up in a landfill.
- 08:36 - 08:39
Contact your local recycling center to find out what can
- 08:39 - 08:40
be recycled in your area.
- 08:44 - 08:46
Look at these lights that someone left on in the
- 08:46 - 08:49
room that is empty, with everyone gone the same for
- 08:50 - 08:51
computers, games and TVs.
- 08:51 - 08:54
Why keep these things on for no one to see?
- 08:55 - 08:55
Not for me, please.
- 08:56 - 08:59
I use what I need and power things off whenever
- 08:59 - 09:00
I leave.
- 09:01 - 09:03
I know that it's easy for one to forget, but
- 09:03 - 09:08
do it enough in a habit you'll see when you
- 09:08 - 09:11
consume less power and energy, you decrease the demands and
- 09:12 - 09:15
therefore emissions from power plants to generate electricity.
- 09:16 - 09:19
Most power plants burn coal, crude oil or other fossil
- 09:20 - 09:25
fuels. This method of creating energy is relatively inexpensive but
- 09:25 - 09:30
causes significant air pollution and contributes to climate change.
- 09:31 - 09:34
If we all turn off two lights in our home
- 09:34 - 09:37
for an hour every day, we could save more than
- 09:37 - 09:42
five million kilowatt hours of electricity nationwide each year.
- 09:43 - 09:46
The amount of coal it takes to produce that much
- 09:46 - 09:50
electricity could fill up the Empire State Building almost three
- 09:51 - 09:57
times. Do you see this faucet in the water that
- 09:57 - 09:59
flows? How much has been wasted?
- 10:00 - 10:03
It's so hard to know just running the water when
- 10:03 - 10:04
it's not in use.
- 10:04 - 10:05
It's careless and wasteful.
- 10:06 - 10:07
There's just no excuse.
- 10:10 - 10:10
Not for me, please.
- 10:11 - 10:15
I avoid wasteful drips while brushing or cleaning my small
- 10:15 - 10:16
finger tips.
- 10:17 - 10:21
We're lucky to have clean water to drink, not the
- 10:21 - 10:23
kind that is harmful, dirty or stinks.
- 10:25 - 10:28
According to water dot org, less than 1% of the
- 10:28 - 10:32
water on the Earth is readily available for human use.
- 10:33 - 10:36
Salt can be removed from the seawater, but this process
- 10:37 - 10:37
is expensive.
- 10:39 - 10:41
Water conservation is a sustainable way to make the most
- 10:42 - 10:43
of the fresh water that we do have.
- 10:45 - 10:48
Did you know a five minute shower uses more than
- 10:49 - 10:52
a person in a developing country uses in a day.
- 10:53 - 10:57
Sadly, one in nine people worldwide do not have access
- 10:57 - 10:59
to safe and clean drinking water.
- 11:00 - 11:03
This lack of clean water kills Children at a rate
- 11:03 - 11:06
equivalent to a jet crashing every four hours.
- 11:11 - 11:14
Do you bring food to school that's packed at your
- 11:14 - 11:16
home after lunch?
- 11:16 - 11:20
How much trash has been thrown from plastic baggies?
- 11:21 - 11:22
Two small boxes of juice.
- 11:22 - 11:25
It's scary, the trash just one meal can produce.
- 11:26 - 11:27
Not for me, please.
- 11:28 - 11:29
I watch what I bring.
- 11:29 - 11:32
Use food containers and avoid plastic things.
- 11:33 - 11:34
I bring my own bottle.
- 11:35 - 11:35
I wash and reuse.
- 11:37 - 11:39
No need to contribute to plastic abuse.
- 11:41 - 11:44
It has been estimated that an average a school age
- 11:45 - 11:51
child using a disposable lunch daily generates £67 of waste
- 11:51 - 11:52
per school year.
- 11:53 - 11:59
That equates to £18,760 of lunch waste for just one
- 11:59 - 12:02
average size elementary school just by changing.
- 12:03 - 12:06
And what and how you pack your lunch can drastically
- 12:07 - 12:08
reduce water waste.
- 12:10 - 12:14
On average, Americans use about 50 billion water bottles every
- 12:15 - 12:19
year, and only 23% of these plastic water bottles are
- 12:19 - 12:24
recycled just in the United States, 1.5 million barrels of
- 12:24 - 12:28
oil are used annually in the production of plastic bottles.
- 12:30 - 12:32
If that oil was not used to make these bottles,
- 12:32 - 12:35
it could fuel 100,000 cars for a whole year.
- 12:39 - 12:40
Even while shopping.
- 12:40 - 12:44
I see so much waste plastic grocery bags found all
- 12:44 - 12:45
over the place.
- 12:46 - 12:48
And why are there so many things plastic wrapped?
- 12:49 - 12:51
Most of these plastic will only be scrapped.
- 12:53 - 12:53
Not for me, please.
- 12:54 - 12:55
I've had enough.
- 12:56 - 12:58
I use my cloth bags when I pack up my
- 12:58 - 13:01
stuff. I also take care of what goes in my
- 13:01 - 13:04
cart. Choosing less packaging and plastic is smart.
- 13:06 - 13:10
Every year, Americans throw away over 140 billion food and
- 13:10 - 13:14
drink containers and bottles more than 30% of our waste
- 13:14 - 13:16
to simply packaging material alone.
- 13:18 - 13:22
Plastic bags are created using fossil fuels and require vast
- 13:22 - 13:26
amounts of water and and an energy to manufacture and
- 13:26 - 13:31
ship. Plastic bags are used on average for 12 minutes,
- 13:33 - 13:37
but remain in landfill, oceans and other places for thousands
- 13:38 - 13:38
of years.
- 13:42 - 13:44
Have you been on a picnic when the sky was
- 13:44 - 13:44
bright blue?
- 13:45 - 13:47
Do you remember the cups, plates and forks that you
- 13:48 - 13:53
used. There are probably plastic and only used once, but
- 13:53 - 13:57
decomposing takes years, not just a few months.
- 13:58 - 13:59
Not for me, please.
- 14:00 - 14:03
I'll join the band against single use plastic because I'm
- 14:03 - 14:03
not a fan.
- 14:05 - 14:07
All that I need can come from my home.
- 14:08 - 14:11
Let's avoid needless spies and reuse what we own.
- 14:15 - 14:17
Our world is connected with resources shared.
- 14:17 - 14:21
We almost pitch, pitch in and give nature are care.
- 14:22 - 14:24
Let's pass on these things that don't make much sense
- 14:25 - 14:29
or benefit us that our planet's expense the options are
- 14:29 - 14:33
endless. If you make the right choice, think the three
- 14:33 - 14:35
R's and use your strong voice.
- 14:38 - 14:40
So how will you choose next time when you're out,
- 14:41 - 14:44
will you think differently and take a new route?
- 14:45 - 14:47
You are free to borrow my little phrase and say,
- 14:48 - 14:48
Not for me, please.
- 14:50 - 14:54
In all of your days, B and
