this is my reflection on the cultural competency resources that we read.
- 00:09 - 00:12
And the first thing that I want to do is I kind of want to talk
- 00:12 - 00:14
about some easy ways that you can start
- 00:14 - 00:17
getting some cultural competency into your classroom.
- 00:18 - 00:23
The first is making sure that you are showing respect for all of your students.
- 00:24 - 00:27
Um and I think it's important to be sure that um my
- 00:27 - 00:32
students or your students show respect for each other as well.
- 00:32 - 00:37
I think that's a skill that definitely needs to be taught to students.
- 00:37 - 00:44
And so showing that modeling that and teaching kids how to do that is one way that
- 00:44 - 00:46
you can really have that cultural competency.
- 00:46 - 00:52
Another is I can use community meetings to get to know my students better
- 00:52 - 00:57
um and to let them get to know each other better as well.
- 00:58 - 01:06
This is a great way to share things to um normalize those differences.
- 01:06 - 01:07
Um and to celebrate them.
- 01:08 - 01:11
Community meetings have been a part of our
- 01:11 - 01:15
um school day for the past two years and I really do think it's helped to
- 01:15 - 01:19
build that community to help us show the
- 01:19 - 01:22
differences between each other and talk about how
- 01:22 - 01:26
um those differences are are good things
- 01:26 - 01:28
and the faculty focused article.
- 01:28 - 01:33
I really enjoyed the part about the effective accommodations for students,
- 01:33 - 01:39
such as giving them extra time for exams, um tests given in the other room.
- 01:39 - 01:42
So that way they can write something,
- 01:42 - 01:47
read it aloud to hear how it sounds and then start um like a final copy
- 01:47 - 01:50
of it and then time to verbally communicate
- 01:50 - 01:53
their ideas before having to write them down.
- 01:53 - 01:57
And I really loved hearing about these things honestly,
- 01:57 - 02:01
because there are things that I often do already in the classroom without thinking
- 02:01 - 02:04
um about how those are
- 02:05 - 02:08
helping me be culturally competent for my students.
- 02:09 - 02:09
Um
- 02:10 - 02:14
teach students how to be active listeners.
- 02:14 - 02:17
Um This is something that we already cover up
- 02:17 - 02:19
my school through a program called Second Step,
- 02:19 - 02:24
which focuses on um social and emotional learning.
- 02:24 - 02:29
So I can kind of use that information as a jumping off point with my students
- 02:30 - 02:34
um to dove a little bit deeper and talk about how that
- 02:34 - 02:38
um helps them really listen to each other, get to know each other better.
- 02:38 - 02:41
Um And then they can also show that cultural competency
- 02:41 - 02:45
when it comes to my fellow teachers and administrators.
- 02:45 - 02:49
Um I would love to give a presentation about cultural competency in the classroom,
- 02:49 - 02:52
especially after having read these resources.
- 02:52 - 02:58
Um I feel like there are a lot of easy things and little things that teachers can do,
- 02:58 - 03:01
like a lot of what I've talked about in this presentation
- 03:01 - 03:04
um to become culturally competent.
- 03:04 - 03:08
Um and I think they can, if they just know what those things are
