Ok. So this is a little overview of my project.
- 00:04 - 00:07
So, hi, I'm Alexandra Grant and for my project,
- 00:07 - 00:10
I'm gonna be researching vaping along with the risks and benefits of it.
- 00:13 - 00:16
So what is vaping the Cleveland Clinic Journal of medicine says that vapes are
- 00:16 - 00:18
electronic cigarettes that use a battery to
- 00:18 - 00:20
help change liquid nicotine into aerosol.
- 00:20 - 00:21
So you can smoke it.
- 00:21 - 00:24
Several versions of E cigarettes are available were originally created
- 00:24 - 00:27
to help lessen the intake of cigarettes and therefore nicotine.
- 00:28 - 00:31
So trends in vaping many more youth than before.
- 00:31 - 00:33
Vape according to the Cleveland Clinic in 2018,
- 00:33 - 00:37
a study done in high school shows that over 20% of students had vaped in the last month
- 00:37 - 00:39
when it used to be less than 2% in past years.
- 00:39 - 00:42
This is similar to what my presentation shows in my pictures.
- 00:45 - 00:46
The benefits of vaping.
- 00:47 - 00:48
Although there aren't many,
- 00:48 - 00:51
there are some positives of vaping for health over cigarettes
- 00:51 - 00:53
such as it does less damage to your lungs,
- 00:53 - 00:57
lowers risk of heart diseases or stroke and is less likely to thicken your blood,
- 00:57 - 00:58
avoiding blood clots.
- 00:58 - 01:01
Some other benefits of vaping are that it doesn't leave a scent for long.
- 01:01 - 01:03
Unlike cigarettes, you can smoke it anywhere
- 01:04 - 01:06
and you can change the strength of the nicotine, making it easier to quit
- 01:09 - 01:09
the
- 01:09 - 01:10
health risks.
- 01:10 - 01:11
Even though there are benefits,
- 01:11 - 01:13
there are a lot more risks associated with vaping such
- 01:13 - 01:15
as the chemicals and flavors can lead to lung cancer,
- 01:15 - 01:18
heart problems, dry eyes, dry eyes, mouth skin,
- 01:19 - 01:22
and there can be harmful heavy metals such as leads in the vapes.
- 01:24 - 01:26
So what is nicotine?
- 01:26 - 01:28
According to the alcohol and drug foundation,
- 01:28 - 01:30
nicotine is a stimulant drug that changes the speed of
- 01:30 - 01:32
how messages are transported between the body and brain.
- 01:33 - 01:36
Something else to know is the last brain area to mature as the prefrontal cortex.
- 01:36 - 01:38
And when adolescent smoke, nicotine, it affects
- 01:39 - 01:39
a
- 01:39 - 01:39
acetycholine
- 01:40 - 01:42
and glutamate receptor signaling which alters
- 01:42 - 01:44
cognitive function and performance with attention.
- 01:47 - 01:49
So, the side effects of nicotine,
- 01:49 - 01:51
although the side effects of vaping were stated,
- 01:51 - 01:54
there are more negative effects of specifically just nicotine such as mouth sores,
- 01:54 - 01:58
vomiting, tooth decay, coughing, dizziness, itchiness,
- 01:59 - 02:02
and so many more things that can affect your body and mind badly.
- 02:05 - 02:07
So the current regulations are on vaping
- 02:07 - 02:08
in 2019,
- 02:08 - 02:11
the tobacco 21 law was passed making that every state
- 02:11 - 02:14
in the US can't sell nicotine to anyone under 21.
- 02:14 - 02:17
Although it took a while for every state to actually implement this law,
- 02:17 - 02:20
there's also a flavor ban in some places losing
- 02:20 - 02:22
young customers who like gaping for the fun fruity flavors
- 02:23 - 02:25
and although even with the regulations,
- 02:25 - 02:27
a lot of kids are still able to get it from older friends,
- 02:27 - 02:30
as we can see in this um chart here, this infographic,
- 02:30 - 02:33
a lot of like a lot of students get it.
- 02:33 - 02:35
Like younger students get it from older people.
- 02:38 - 02:40
So more research is needed
- 02:40 - 02:45
um to be done built to more accurately tell if vaping could just be as effective as
- 02:45 - 02:48
FDA proved smoking cessation aids such as the patch
- 02:48 - 02:51
nicotine gum lozenges and certain medications such as wellbutrin
- 02:52 - 02:52
to do this.
- 02:52 - 02:54
Though physicians need to be more educated on vaping because
- 02:54 - 02:56
according to an article from our National Library of Medicine,
- 02:57 - 03:00
it was said clinicians are not to not totally against vaping because
- 03:00 - 03:02
they don't know all the facts so they can't warn their parent,
- 03:02 - 03:03
warn their patients.
- 03:03 - 03:05
So it would be very helpful if we were to
- 03:06 - 03:09
educate like doctors just more on vaping and the harmful effects of it.
- 03:11 - 03:14
So overall, here's my conclusion
- 03:14 - 03:14
and here.
- 03:14 - 03:16
So my ref here's my references and inclusion
- 03:16 - 03:18
vaping may be better than smoking cigarettes,
- 03:18 - 03:19
but it has many consequences.
- 03:19 - 03:22
It needs to be researched more to become FDA approved.
- 03:22 - 03:25
Yeah. At the end, you just overview my presentation.
