Hello, my name is Abby coding and this is my
- 00:04 - 00:09
digital tool for module to um I decided to do
- 00:09 - 00:11
a Prezi um and I thought that I kind of
- 00:11 - 00:15
talked about that before I got started on my material,
- 00:16 - 00:19
so I remember using Prezi back in high school and
- 00:19 - 00:21
it was kind of like the new power point um
- 00:22 - 00:24
and it was really cool, but I remember a lot
- 00:24 - 00:27
of students like getting sick and clatter like getting motion
- 00:27 - 00:30
sickness because of all the movement um but I wanted
- 00:30 - 00:33
to check in and kind of see um because I
- 00:34 - 00:35
haven't looked at it since high school and they have
- 00:35 - 00:39
this new great Prezi video um it's very easy to
- 00:39 - 00:43
use um and it's got, you know, a lot of
- 00:43 - 00:46
different, you know, types of landscapes and things like that,
- 00:46 - 00:47
which I thought were really awesome.
- 00:48 - 00:54
Um I work primarily on a Mac and unfortunately on
- 00:54 - 00:58
the website it's not compatible with Prezi specifically, Prezi video
- 00:58 - 01:04
is not compatible with um was safari, so I had
- 01:04 - 01:07
to download the Prezi video app, um but that was
- 01:07 - 01:13
really, really easy um and had no problems with that,
- 01:14 - 01:17
you can click on stuff and you know, and you
- 01:17 - 01:19
can add pictures, I didn't have any specific pictures that
- 01:19 - 01:21
I wanted to add for this presentation, so I just
- 01:21 - 01:24
kind of did some cool little stickers that they had
- 01:24 - 01:26
already in the app.
- 01:28 - 01:33
Okay, so I'm doing my presentation on the defining second
- 01:34 - 01:39
language acquisition um because I believe that it's important um
- 01:42 - 01:45
to know the definition and and what single second language
- 01:45 - 01:49
acquisition is before we teach, you know, teach our students.
- 01:49 - 01:54
So being familiar with the concept, Being familiar with this
- 01:54 - 01:59
concept um is important because once we understand this is
- 01:59 - 02:01
the first step of many other steps to come.
- 02:02 - 02:05
Um I decided to do my presentation on this topic
- 02:06 - 02:09
because after reading through this overview, I gained some a
- 02:09 - 02:10
lot of knowledge that I did not have before.
- 02:11 - 02:18
This knowledge is imperative um for teachers to know for
- 02:18 - 02:21
the benefit of our learners and I'm still new to
- 02:21 - 02:21
this profession.
- 02:22 - 02:25
So some of you, you know, some of you may
- 02:25 - 02:27
have already been familiar with all of this, but I
- 02:27 - 02:29
thought I would just present this information to those like
- 02:29 - 02:33
myself who um gained a lot of new knowledge from
- 02:33 - 02:35
reading this the beginning of this chapter.
- 02:36 - 02:42
Um so before you define second language acquisition as a
- 02:42 - 02:44
whole, like a, you know, a big word, you have
- 02:44 - 02:45
to divine language.
- 02:46 - 02:49
Um so in this section it talks about competence versus
- 02:49 - 02:56
performance. So chomsky divine competence as mental representation of the
- 02:56 - 02:59
grammatical rules that compromise as speaker.
- 02:59 - 03:05
Here's mental grammar, performance involves the use of language for
- 03:05 - 03:06
comprehension and production.
- 03:07 - 03:09
So I think all of us are kind of more
- 03:09 - 03:11
familiar with the performance side of this.
- 03:11 - 03:12
So how does this relate?
- 03:13 - 03:17
How do these two performance and competence relate to our
- 03:17 - 03:17
english learners?
- 03:18 - 03:21
Well, when I read the paragraph, um I decided to
- 03:21 - 03:23
put myself in the role as a researcher and my
- 03:23 - 03:25
middle school students in the role as the english learner.
- 03:26 - 03:28
And when I did, Excuse me when I did this,
- 03:29 - 03:31
the paragraph made a lot more sense as a teacher.
- 03:32 - 03:34
I want my students to be competent in the L.
- 03:34 - 03:36
two, but there's not a direct window to see my
- 03:37 - 03:37
students competence.
- 03:38 - 03:41
So as the researcher or the teacher, I try to
- 03:41 - 03:43
understand their competence through their performance.
- 03:44 - 03:48
Um And again performance um is the use of language
- 03:49 - 03:50
for comprehension and production.
- 03:51 - 03:52
So this can be useful.
- 03:53 - 03:55
So we understand the difference between these two concepts and
- 03:55 - 03:56
how they relate to our students.
- 03:58 - 04:05
So next we have second language acquisition versus foreign language
- 04:06 - 04:10
acquisition. So what is second, What is 2nd language?
- 04:11 - 04:14
Second language acquisition refers to the learning of another language
- 04:15 - 04:19
in a context in which the language is used as
- 04:19 - 04:21
a means for wider communication.
- 04:22 - 04:24
So in the book that gave the example, um if
- 04:24 - 04:26
you're learning like if you're learning english in the United
- 04:27 - 04:30
States, the assumption is that you will pick up the
- 04:30 - 04:33
language as a result to being exposed to it every
- 04:33 - 04:37
day. Um So that's when it that's kind of like
- 04:37 - 04:43
the second language acquisition um Foreign language acquisition refers to
- 04:44 - 04:46
the learning that takes place in the classroom through instruction.
- 04:47 - 04:50
There are usually limited times to use the language that
- 04:50 - 04:54
you are learning um how does this relate to english
- 04:54 - 04:58
learners? Well um when we relate our experience relating our
- 04:59 - 05:02
experiences to students is a very positive thing relating our
- 05:02 - 05:06
experiences, Learning language to our students is an ultra positive
- 05:07 - 05:09
thing, but we must be aware of the difference in
- 05:09 - 05:10
how we learn the language.
- 05:10 - 05:13
In my case, I received the ladder, so I learned
- 05:14 - 05:17
spanish in a classroom over many years, I didn't have
- 05:17 - 05:20
many chances to use um spanish as I was learning
- 05:21 - 05:25
it. Um so it was more of a learning process
- 05:25 - 05:28
rather than an acquisition process for my students.
- 05:29 - 05:32
Um they are here in the United States, being immersed
- 05:32 - 05:32
in the language.
- 05:33 - 05:41
Um Iii, 2nd language acquisition, now, knowing the difference, I
- 05:41 - 05:43
can better understand the acquisition process and better tailor learning
- 05:44 - 05:45
and acquisition to my students.
- 05:46 - 05:49
And I remember um in one of our first journals
- 05:50 - 05:53
that we wrote it, asked you know, what, what experience
- 05:54 - 05:57
have you had learning a second language and I was
- 05:57 - 06:00
like, oh well, I've you know, tried learning a second
- 06:00 - 06:03
language, I can relate that to my students and and
- 06:04 - 06:05
the ways that I learned, I can just show that
- 06:06 - 06:10
to my students, but you know, and through reading this,
- 06:10 - 06:13
the difference between the second language acquisition and the foreign
- 06:13 - 06:16
language acquisition, I realized that there is a huge difference
- 06:16 - 06:22
in between those um acquisition versus learning.
- 06:24 - 06:26
So acquisition is the process of picking up a language
- 06:26 - 06:29
without making any conscious effort to master it.
- 06:30 - 06:34
Learning involves intentional effort to study and learn a language.
- 06:36 - 06:40
Um in the book, it says, it may seem that
- 06:40 - 06:43
acquisition can only take place in the second language realm,
- 06:44 - 06:46
and learning can only take place in the foreign language
- 06:47 - 06:51
um realm, but that is not true.
- 06:51 - 06:55
Both acquisitions and learning can take place in both contexts.
- 06:56 - 06:59
Um throughout reading these sections.
- 07:00 - 07:03
Um it kind of makes with like specifically the verses.
- 07:05 - 07:07
Um it makes it seem like it's one or the
- 07:07 - 07:12
other, but I think this paragraph was very important because
- 07:12 - 07:15
it talked about how both of these spaces can exist
- 07:16 - 07:18
or both of these things can exist in each other's
- 07:19 - 07:21
spaces. Um so it's not just one or the other.
- 07:22 - 07:25
The learning and the acquisition can take place together in
- 07:25 - 07:26
both contexts.
- 07:27 - 07:31
So I think that this is important because um as
- 07:32 - 07:35
a, as a teacher, you know, reading this, I want
- 07:37 - 07:42
my students to become, I want my students to acquire
- 07:43 - 07:46
language, but when we think about the access test scores
- 07:46 - 07:49
and the um access tests in the spring and things
- 07:49 - 07:52
like that, they are going to be measured um about
- 07:52 - 07:58
how much they learned, um and and not as much
- 07:58 - 07:59
as how much they acquired.
- 07:59 - 08:03
So I think it's important to to really know that
- 08:03 - 08:06
both of them can take place together without one overwhelming
- 08:06 - 08:08
the other, if that kind of makes sense.
- 08:08 - 08:13
Um but this is the end of my presentation.
- 08:14 - 08:18
Um so I hope that you learned something from it
- 08:18 - 08:20
and let me know if you have any questions.
- 08:20 - 08:21
Thank you
