Hello everyone.
- 00:03 - 00:04
My name is Austin Hackett and today we will
- 00:04 - 00:07
be talking a little bit about corporate social responsibility.
- 00:07 - 00:09
So what is CSR
- 00:10 - 00:14
um CSR is the idea that businesses have a responsibility to
- 00:14 - 00:17
society um in order to benefit them in a positive way.
- 00:18 - 00:20
Um this commonly relates to, you know,
- 00:20 - 00:24
environmental social corporate governance and even economic issues.
- 00:24 - 00:26
Um so for this, just do an assignment.
- 00:26 - 00:29
You know, CSR really is all about taking action.
- 00:29 - 00:32
And so what I wanted to do is kind of look at
- 00:32 - 00:35
my company internally and kind of see what our current dilemmas are.
- 00:35 - 00:40
And I saw two big things for my own company and how it could relate to CSR.
- 00:40 - 00:41
One of those being,
- 00:41 - 00:44
we have constant staffing shortages due to employee turnover
- 00:44 - 00:46
and a bunch of contracts that we've recently won
- 00:47 - 00:50
and we also have a large lack of company diversity.
- 00:51 - 00:51
Um you know,
- 00:51 - 00:54
throughout the course we've talked about um
- 00:54 - 00:57
diversity being really important for an organization and
- 00:57 - 01:00
how it can actually benefit by having the
- 01:00 - 01:03
company having more ideas and more innovation.
- 01:03 - 01:07
And so in Livingston's article How to promote racial equity in the workplace,
- 01:07 - 01:09
he kind of talks about the three CS.
- 01:09 - 01:13
Um first understanding that your company has a diversity condition
- 01:13 - 01:18
to um having people in the organization that are concerned enough about it
- 01:18 - 01:21
that they're going to take action and then the last one being correction,
- 01:21 - 01:24
you know, what are we going to implement in order to create a solution?
- 01:25 - 01:27
Um so
- 01:27 - 01:30
luckily I had an opportunity for my company.
- 01:30 - 01:34
Um we're currently hiring engineers, environmental engineering interns,
- 01:34 - 01:36
project managers and environmental scientists.
- 01:36 - 01:40
Um And so that kind of gave me the possibility to implement a solution.
- 01:40 - 01:42
Um because we're hiring,
- 01:42 - 01:46
I went ahead and worked with the Sacramental LGBT Community Center,
- 01:46 - 01:47
who I commonly worked with
- 01:47 - 01:49
on other social issues.
- 01:49 - 01:52
Um but this allowed me to work with them
- 01:52 - 01:55
and through their job boards which really target um
- 01:56 - 01:58
you know, LGBT people of
- 01:59 - 02:00
minorities, people of color,
- 02:00 - 02:06
um allowed them to post our job opportunity for
- 02:06 - 02:09
our um internship position on their job boards.
- 02:09 - 02:14
Um And the hope of this is getting more applicants um that might not have
- 02:14 - 02:17
the access to these types of internships
- 02:17 - 02:19
and really getting them engaged and interested in
- 02:19 - 02:23
um the environmental industry, which doesn't have that much diversity
- 02:24 - 02:25
and hopefully getting someone hired that
- 02:26 - 02:30
um is going to help increase our diversity
- 02:30 - 02:33
and increase our firm's ability for innovation.
- 02:34 - 02:34
No,
- 02:35 - 02:38
so looking forward to completing the hiring
- 02:38 - 02:39
process within the next couple of weeks,
- 02:39 - 02:45
um and getting more engagement from people to um kind of tackle our diversity issue
