Hi everyone Welcome back.
- 00:01 - 00:04
This is near a all author of in distractible how
- 00:04 - 00:06
to control your attention and choose your life and it
- 00:06 - 00:09
is my pleasure to welcome you to this fourth part
- 00:10 - 00:13
of this series on how to become in distractible and
- 00:13 - 00:16
in this episode we are going to tackle how to
- 00:16 - 00:16
prevent distraction.
- 00:17 - 00:20
With packs you'll remember, we have this four part model
- 00:20 - 00:22
that we call the Indus tractable model that using these
- 00:23 - 00:26
four steps, anyone can learn to become in distractible to
- 00:26 - 00:27
control your attention and choose your life.
- 00:28 - 00:30
And we've talked about the first three steps of mastering
- 00:31 - 00:34
the internal trigger, making time for traction, hacking back external
- 00:35 - 00:39
triggers. And so finally the fourth step preventing distraction with
- 00:39 - 00:40
packs, how do we do that?
- 00:40 - 00:42
Well packed are these commitment devices?
- 00:43 - 00:45
These are things that we decide in advance to prevent
- 00:45 - 00:48
us as a firewall, as a last line of defense
- 00:49 - 00:52
to prevent us from getting distracted because remember being in
- 00:52 - 00:56
distractible does not only require we keep distractions out, it
- 00:56 - 00:59
also requires us to keep ourselves in.
- 00:59 - 01:02
And that's what using these packs are all about pre
- 01:03 - 01:06
commitments, things that we decide in advance to make sure
- 01:06 - 01:10
that when our impulses might pull us towards distraction, there's
- 01:10 - 01:12
something that prevents us from going off track.
- 01:13 - 01:15
Now these pre commitments come in several different types and
- 01:16 - 01:18
they can reduce the likelihood of us getting distracted.
- 01:19 - 01:21
And there are three strategies that we can apply.
- 01:21 - 01:25
Three types of packs we have in these packs, we
- 01:25 - 01:29
have what we call effort packs, we have price packs,
- 01:30 - 01:32
and we have what we call identity packs.
- 01:32 - 01:34
We're going to walk through for the next few minutes,
- 01:35 - 01:38
how to utilize these three types of pre commitment devices
- 01:38 - 01:41
to make sure that we can prevent distraction with packs
- 01:42 - 01:43
to make sure that we don't get distracted.
- 01:44 - 01:46
Now, the first type of pact that we can use
- 01:46 - 01:49
is called an effort packed an effort packed prevents distraction
- 01:51 - 01:54
and unwanted behaviors by inserting some bit of effort, some
- 01:54 - 01:57
bit of friction, some bit of of of of doing
- 01:58 - 02:00
that prevents us from going away from what we really
- 02:01 - 02:01
want to do.
- 02:02 - 02:04
Some bit of friction because we know that in this
- 02:04 - 02:08
day and age when we're working, we oftentimes don't have
- 02:08 - 02:11
that social pressure that past generations had when they were
- 02:11 - 02:12
at their desk.
- 02:12 - 02:14
If they were slacking off, if you are reading a
- 02:14 - 02:16
magazine or a newspaper at your desk or listening to
- 02:17 - 02:18
the radio, everybody would know.
- 02:18 - 02:20
But now we can put in our headphones and people
- 02:20 - 02:22
don't know whether we're listening to a podcast or Youtube
- 02:23 - 02:25
or on a conference call or whether on our screens
- 02:25 - 02:30
were calling, we're making sales emails or whether we're scrolling
- 02:30 - 02:31
facebook, people have no idea.
- 02:32 - 02:33
And so that social pressure is gone.
- 02:34 - 02:36
And so what we can have to do is to
- 02:36 - 02:39
replace some of those constraints, replace some of that friction
- 02:40 - 02:41
that keeps us on task.
- 02:42 - 02:44
Now, the ironic thing is that we can actually use
- 02:44 - 02:47
tech to make sure that we prevent ourselves from getting
- 02:47 - 02:51
getting distracted by tech and so we can use these
- 02:51 - 02:52
effort packed in our daily life.
- 02:53 - 02:55
What we can also do is to prevent distraction.
- 02:55 - 02:59
Using price pacts, Price packs is when there's some kind
- 02:59 - 03:02
of cost to getting distracted, when there's some kind of
- 03:02 - 03:05
penalty if you will, that if you don't do what
- 03:06 - 03:07
you say, you're going to do, there's going to be
- 03:07 - 03:11
some kind of cost inflicted on you if you don't,
- 03:11 - 03:12
if you were to get off track.
- 03:13 - 03:16
And this can be very effective, but only when you
- 03:16 - 03:19
can also remove those external triggers that can lead to
- 03:19 - 03:22
distraction. I'll give you a good example of a price
- 03:22 - 03:23
packed in my own life.
- 03:23 - 03:24
For many years.
- 03:24 - 03:28
I was clinically obese and I hated exercise, hated it.
- 03:28 - 03:30
And so what one day was to make a price
- 03:30 - 03:33
pact with myself and I took a calendar and I
- 03:33 - 03:36
put it on my wall inside my dresser inside my
- 03:36 - 03:39
closet. And every day when I wake up I see
- 03:39 - 03:42
that calendar and on that calendar is taped.
- 03:42 - 03:43
A $100 bill.
- 03:44 - 03:46
Now next to that calendar on a shelf is a
- 03:47 - 03:47
big lighter.
- 03:48 - 03:49
And every day I have a choice to make I
- 03:49 - 03:51
call this the burn or burn technique.
- 03:51 - 03:54
Every day I can either burn some calories by taking
- 03:54 - 03:56
a walk, doing some pushups, going to the gym, doing
- 03:56 - 04:00
something physically active or if I don't burn, those calories
- 04:01 - 04:02
have to burn the money.
- 04:03 - 04:05
So that's an example of a price packed again.
- 04:05 - 04:08
You have to do this last, this is not something
- 04:08 - 04:09
that you do first.
- 04:09 - 04:12
You have to do this when the distraction is something
- 04:12 - 04:14
that requires a temporary amount of willpower, something that is
- 04:15 - 04:18
difficult to overcome in that moment that you need to
- 04:18 - 04:21
overcome and that price pack can remind, you know, I
- 04:21 - 04:23
made a promise with myself, I just need to get
- 04:23 - 04:25
over that temporary hump in order to do what it
- 04:25 - 04:27
is. I said I was going to do these can
- 04:27 - 04:30
be very difficult to start but they're very effective.
- 04:30 - 04:33
Making a price packed with yourself or another person can
- 04:33 - 04:34
be a very, very effective technique.
- 04:35 - 04:37
But remember you have to do this after you've done
- 04:37 - 04:40
the other three steps of the indestructible model.
- 04:40 - 04:45
Only after you've master the internal triggers, made time for
- 04:45 - 04:48
attraction, hack back the external triggers, then you can use
- 04:48 - 04:49
packs like this price packed.
- 04:50 - 04:54
This works best if you have first learned self compassion
- 04:54 - 04:56
that if you beat yourself up and you don't know
- 04:57 - 04:58
how to properly use self compassion.
- 04:59 - 05:00
This technique can in fact backfire.
- 05:01 - 05:03
So make sure you reference my book in distractible, which
- 05:03 - 05:06
will tell you exactly how to implement this technique correctly
- 05:06 - 05:08
because if you do not do it correctly, don't just
- 05:09 - 05:11
watch this video, make sure you get all the techniques
- 05:12 - 05:14
and the background on how to use such a technique
- 05:15 - 05:16
effectively or it will backfire.
- 05:17 - 05:19
Finally, the last type of pact we can use is
- 05:19 - 05:20
what we call an identity packed.
- 05:21 - 05:25
An identity packed aligns our behavior with our identity.
- 05:25 - 05:27
When people have a moniker, when they have some kind
- 05:28 - 05:30
of a name, they used to call themselves whether it's
- 05:31 - 05:34
a vegetarian or a particular religion or whatever the case
- 05:34 - 05:34
might be.
- 05:35 - 05:37
When you call yourself a Now, when you have some
- 05:38 - 05:40
kind of moniker that you use to identify yourself, that
- 05:40 - 05:44
can help you conform to your beliefs because our identity
- 05:45 - 05:47
greatly influences our behavior.
- 05:48 - 05:50
So by making an identity identity packed by calling yourself
- 05:51 - 05:54
by a certain moniker, you are shaping yourself image, what
- 05:54 - 05:56
makes it, which makes it much more likely that you
- 05:56 - 05:57
will stay on track.
- 05:57 - 05:59
You may have noticed that throughout this series, I've been
- 05:59 - 06:03
wearing these shirts with different slogans and mantras relating to
- 06:04 - 06:05
time and time management.
- 06:05 - 06:08
That's because I'm reinforcing my self image as someone who
- 06:09 - 06:09
is indestructible.
- 06:10 - 06:12
That's my now, that's the kind of person I am.
- 06:12 - 06:16
I am in distractible and by sharing it with others
- 06:16 - 06:19
by teaching others, by preaching the gospel of how we
- 06:19 - 06:20
can all become indestructible.
- 06:21 - 06:25
This is how I also influence my own behavior, right?
- 06:25 - 06:27
This is how I keep myself on track by teaching
- 06:28 - 06:29
others this methodology as well.
- 06:30 - 06:31
And so that's very, very effective.
- 06:31 - 06:32
It helps you adopt these rituals.
- 06:32 - 06:35
If you look at different religions around the world, they
- 06:35 - 06:38
all have an element of proselytizing of bringing others into
- 06:38 - 06:38
the fold.
- 06:39 - 06:41
That's not only to grow the flock, it's also to
- 06:41 - 06:45
reinforce the lessons in the people who are already believers
- 06:46 - 06:48
to keep them on the straight and narrow.
- 06:48 - 06:51
So we can adopt that ourselves by becoming in distractible.
- 06:52 - 06:56
So in summary, you have the power to make these
- 06:56 - 06:56
pre commitments.
- 06:57 - 07:00
You can make effort packs, you can make price packs,
- 07:00 - 07:03
you can make identity packs, you can use these packs,
- 07:03 - 07:06
these pre commitment devices to make sure that when when
- 07:06 - 07:08
you've tried all the other techniques, this is the last
- 07:09 - 07:09
line of defense.
- 07:10 - 07:11
This is your firewall to prevent you from getting distracted.
- 07:12 - 07:16
Now, of course there's a big chunk of getting distracted
- 07:16 - 07:17
that's not just about what you do.
- 07:18 - 07:20
It also has to do with what other people do.
- 07:20 - 07:22
And so in the next video, we're going to cover
- 07:23 - 07:26
how to build an indestructible workplace, right?
- 07:26 - 07:28
Even if we're in distractible, what if everybody around us
- 07:29 - 07:32
is distracted and their distraction is causing us to go
- 07:32 - 07:32
off track?
- 07:32 - 07:34
How do we build an indestructible workplace?
- 07:34 - 07:36
So make sure you join me for that next video
