Hi, everyone.
- 00:01 - 00:02
My name is Kim Flores,
- 00:02 - 00:04
and I'm going to be walking you
- 00:04 - 00:06
through my learning experience throughout this course.
- 00:07 - 00:08
The three pieces that I will be focusing on
- 00:08 - 00:12
in this presentation are the film Paper Tigers,
- 00:12 - 00:16
a book titled After the Rain and I will be reflecting on myself care project as well.
- 00:18 - 00:20
Paper Tigers is a film that I was really able to connect
- 00:20 - 00:23
with and one that touched me in so many different ways.
- 00:24 - 00:27
I honestly think it's one of my favorite educational films that I've ever seen.
- 00:28 - 00:32
Watching it reminded me of why I chose to go into this field in the first place,
- 00:32 - 00:34
and it made me feel really hopeful about
- 00:34 - 00:36
the difference we can make in our students lives
- 00:37 - 00:39
as someone who experienced a lot of trauma as a child.
- 00:39 - 00:42
The topic of this film is one that's very near and dear to my heart.
- 00:44 - 00:46
The film highlighted various different types of trauma
- 00:46 - 00:49
that students are experiencing in schools every day.
- 00:50 - 00:51
When I was younger,
- 00:51 - 00:55
I often found myself in similar situations as the students in the film
- 00:55 - 00:56
and just like those students,
- 00:56 - 01:00
I was fortunate enough to have really great role models mentors and
- 01:00 - 01:03
trusting adults who were there to guide me through the rough times.
- 01:04 - 01:07
I know that not everyone has access to these same types of supports,
- 01:07 - 01:12
but this film is proof for me that with enough dedication and hard work, trauma,
- 01:12 - 01:16
informed practices and care can really be a reality for all students.
- 01:18 - 01:20
This film helped me to understand that schools can really make
- 01:20 - 01:24
a difference in supporting students who are or have experienced trauma.
- 01:25 - 01:26
The stories in the film showed
- 01:26 - 01:29
that providing students with guidance and mentorship
- 01:29 - 01:32
and acting as trusting adults for them can make a world of difference.
- 01:33 - 01:36
The film highlighted the need for trauma informed practices,
- 01:36 - 01:39
and it highlighted the positive influences that they can have
- 01:40 - 01:41
for students in the film.
- 01:41 - 01:43
Attending the school that used trauma informed
- 01:43 - 01:46
practices meant significant improvement in behavior,
- 01:46 - 01:49
an increase in consistent attendance and
- 01:49 - 01:51
significant improvements in academic achievement.
- 01:52 - 01:53
Lastly,
- 01:53 - 01:56
the film reminded me of how resilient students can be and
- 01:56 - 01:59
how important it is to foster resilience in all our students.
- 02:00 - 02:02
As someone who intends to go into this field,
- 02:02 - 02:04
I will carry with me what I learned from this
- 02:04 - 02:07
film and use it in my work with future students.
- 02:07 - 02:11
This film has inspired me to continue to be a trusting adult that students can
- 02:11 - 02:14
come to for support and to advocate for
- 02:14 - 02:16
students by stressing the importance of trauma,
- 02:16 - 02:18
informed practices and care in schools.
- 02:21 - 02:24
Next, I want to focus on a book titled After the Rain.
- 02:24 - 02:28
Gentle Reminders for Healing, Courage and Self Love by Alexandra L.
- 02:29 - 02:31
The book was gifted to me by a close friend of mine,
- 02:31 - 02:33
and I really enjoyed reading the book and
- 02:33 - 02:36
engaging with the exercises that I recommend.
- 02:36 - 02:39
The author divides the book into different life lessons
- 02:39 - 02:42
by giving her own personal stories and experiences,
- 02:42 - 02:46
and she follows them up with positive affirmations as well as with an
- 02:46 - 02:50
exercise for you to engage with as you're processing some of these lessons.
- 02:51 - 02:53
The book is gentle and very relatable.
- 02:53 - 02:54
When I read it,
- 02:54 - 02:56
I felt as though the author was my friend and we were
- 02:56 - 02:59
sitting in a room together while she shared those stories with me.
- 03:01 - 03:05
I included the opening quote in this presentation because when I read those words,
- 03:05 - 03:06
they felt so powerful.
- 03:07 - 03:10
Her book has constantly reminded me that healing is a process.
- 03:11 - 03:14
It is a journey that has many ups and downs, and it's not easy,
- 03:14 - 03:18
so we must be gentle and patient with ourselves as we work through it.
- 03:19 - 03:21
The messages in this book have helped me to
- 03:21 - 03:23
reframe a lot of the doubts that I've experienced,
- 03:23 - 03:26
and they've allowed for me to connect with myself in a way where
- 03:26 - 03:29
I appreciate and love myself for everything that makes me who I am.
- 03:31 - 03:35
This brings me to the last topic that I will be talking about,
- 03:35 - 03:36
and that is my self care project.
- 03:38 - 03:42
One of the things that has helped me manage my anxiety in the past has been exercised.
- 03:42 - 03:46
I've noticed that taking 30 minutes out of my day to get my body moving,
- 03:46 - 03:49
being present and focus on nothing else except for exercising has
- 03:49 - 03:53
helped me tremendously in dealing with stress and regulating my mood.
- 03:54 - 03:57
Despite these benefits, my journey with exercise has been rocky,
- 03:57 - 03:59
and it's a tool that I had not used in some time.
- 04:00 - 04:03
That's why I decided to challenge myself to exercise three
- 04:03 - 04:06
times a week for 30 minutes at home each week.
- 04:06 - 04:09
I usually prioritize other self care activities and
- 04:09 - 04:11
try to practice them as often as I can
- 04:12 - 04:15
but prioritizing exercise is self care was challenging. For me.
- 04:16 - 04:19
My responsibilities don't allow for much downtime.
- 04:19 - 04:22
And when I do have time for myself, I honestly just want to spend it by think,
- 04:22 - 04:25
doing things like having a cup of coffee or watching Netflix.
- 04:26 - 04:29
The school of exercising felt like a chore more than anything else.
- 04:30 - 04:33
So not only was finding time challenging, but when I did have the time,
- 04:33 - 04:35
I didn't have the motivation.
- 04:36 - 04:40
Once I was able to get into a routine, however, it didn't seem as much of a chore.
- 04:41 - 04:45
I was not able to hit my goal every week, but I was able to begin exercising again,
- 04:45 - 04:47
and that's definitely a win for me.
- 04:49 - 04:52
Dedicating time to working out again taught me about my strengths,
- 04:52 - 04:55
and it taught me that I am capable of doing anything I want to,
- 04:55 - 04:57
so long as I put in dedication in time.
- 04:58 - 05:00
Exercising again has helped me to manage my stress,
- 05:00 - 05:04
and it reminded me of the importance of prioritizing things that help us feel good.
- 05:05 - 05:07
This project has also reminded me of
- 05:07 - 05:09
the importance of teaching and emphasizing self
- 05:09 - 05:13
care to future clients as a tool that can help them manage their stress,
- 05:13 - 05:16
overcome trauma and promote overall well being.
- 05:17 - 05:20
That is all for my presentation. Thank you all so much for your time.
