Example 1

Helpful Hints and Rules

Conservation of Mass

Mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical equations

Rules:

  • You cannot change the subscripts on molecues or atoms

  • No fraction or decimal coefficients

  • Coefficients must be in the lowest possible ratio

Hints

  • Do not start with H or O

  • Consider polynomials as a unit

  • Leave single molecules for last

  • Use fractions or decimals to determine the coefficients

How to Balance Equations

  • Write down the elements on each side of the reaction

  • Count the number of each element on the reactant side

  • Count the number of each element on the product side

  • Using coefficients, make the number of elements on both sides of the reaction equal

How To Make Hot Chocolate

1/2 c powdered milk

1/2 c powdered sugar

1/4 c cocoa

1/2 t cornstarch

1/4 t salt

Marshmallows to taste

Mix gently & keep your recipe for later!
