Helpful Hints and Rules
Conservation of Mass
Mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical equations
Rules:
- You cannot change the subscripts on molecues or atoms
- No fraction or decimal coefficients
- Coefficients must be in the lowest possible ratio
Hints
- Consider polynomials as a unit
- Leave single molecules for last
- Use fractions or decimals to determine the coefficients
How to Balance Equations
- Write down the elements on each side of the reaction
- Count the number of each element on the reactant side
- Count the number of each element on the product side
- Using coefficients, make the number of elements on both sides of the reaction equal

Create a TedEd video of how to balance chemical reactions
Write a balanced reaction for your hot chocolate mix
and compare with a partner.
Your TedEd video must include:
- Video (either on already on YouTube or one made by yourself)
- Minimum of seven questions
- At least three additional resources
