Post-Secondary Pathway Plan

My path to becoming a police officer or detective

Career Pathway Options

Pathways Chosen

Based on my career cluster and what interests me most, the two careers I am hoping to get into are a police officer or a detective. Both of these careers however, have certain requirements I must complete after getting my high school diploma. The two career pathways I am planning on taking to be that much closer to my goal are going to college or university.

Police Officer

Secondary School Course Requirements

When looking at going to college for policing, the minimum requirement asked is for at least having a high school diploma. Courses in specific that are good to have are at least 70% or higher in grade 12 english, or taking three years of math or any of the sciences.

College

How I Will Get These Requirements

Considering these requirements in particular are centered around graduating high school, I'm going to try and achieve these by taking both math and english all 4 years with an average of at least 80% in grade 12, and also get all of the required credits to graduate.

Detective

Secondary School Course Requirements

As well as for policing, becoming a detective also requires the minimum of having a high school diploma. Other important courses that should be taken are english, law, biology, or even anthropology.

University

How to Achieve These Requirements

To achieve my goal, I will be taking all the required courses to earn the 30 credits I need, also I will be taking co-op to act as an introduction to policing, as I have to become a police first before a detective.

Education Programs

Is Education Required?

For both becoming a police officer or detective, going to college or university is not required, however, it is good to have.

Education

College

For policing, there is a program entitled police foundations that teaches you the the different laws, fitness and health, and procedures required to build a career as a police officer. The program lasts for four years.

University

When looking to become a detective, there is a program known as criminal justice, which will teach you all the rules and regulations involved when becoming a detective. The program also lasts for four years.

Financial

When figuring out what I would like to do with my future, I realize that I must have a financial plan in order to become successful in finding a career I truly enjoy, and also how I'm gonna be able to afford what job I would like to be involved in.

Financial

Financial Needs

Needs

In order to get into the field I want, there are also gonna be costs i have to cover, both for college and university. These necessities include:

  • college or university tuition
  • school textbooks or supplies
  • certain equipment
  • police car
  • staying on campus or in an apartment

Financial Support

Support

If my needs are unable to be met, there are also certain financial support systems that I could strive to get instead. These include:

  • earning a scholarship
  • college/university grants
  • saving up
  • having a part-time job
  • on-the-job training to avoid going to college or university altogether

Learning Style

Learning Style

I became aware that Iam in fact a visual learner based on what I learned from my strength profile. However, based on my learning style and the career paths I wish to achieve, I think I would be better suited to an on-the-job training program for policing. This is because being a visual learner, I am able to learn best by watching what is being taught. In an on-the-job training program, that is exactly how this career is being taught.

Management Skills and Work Habits

Management and Work Habits

After taking the management skills and work habits assessment, my strongest work habit is collaboration, and my greatest skill is assertive communication. Considering these are both of my biggest strengths, a career in policing would be better suited for me. This is because both of my greatest strengths are involved with working with others, and one of the main requirements for becoming a police officer is teamwork. as opposed to being a detective, where having this position requires more independent work.

Pros/Cons of Each Career Path

Pros/Cons

While each of the careers I am interested in are a good possibility, the paths to get there have multiple different pros and cons that can help me to better make my decision.

Pros and Cons of College

Pros/Cons of College

Cons

  • long-term commitment to school
  • less of a chance as opposed to university
  • difficult training
  • maintaining high levels of fitness

Pros

  • easy to achieve
  • the program is of interest to me
  • not as many requirements of any other program
  • eventually getting into the career i want
  • being able to use my learning skills and work habits and excelling at them

Pros and Cons of University

Pros/Cons of University

Pros

  • better work opportunities
  • getting into my second option of career paths
  • career path of interest
  • greater in depth learning

Cons

  • much more difficult to get into as opposed to college
  • wouldn't be getting into my first choice of career paths
  • greater amount of expenses involved
  • much tougher than college

Barriers and Challenges

Barriers/Challenges

The overall barriers and challenges I must face when finding the career path that best suits me include:

  • covering the financial aspects involved in each path
  • gaining all of the requirements needed to get into college/university
  • getting a major in the program of my choice and landing a job opportunity
  • finding the position i truly love
  • learning everything there is to know about the career of my choice

Contingency Plan

As for having a contingency plan, I'm going to make my career as a detective and going to university as my backup plan, mostly because of the fact that I would prefer to become a police officer, but want to have a backup idea just in case my initial career plan doesn't work out. Overall, both pathways are strong ones that I do believe I can achieve, and I will attempt to follow these paths to end up in the position that feels right.
