Mary Catherine Swanson/ Foundational Principals of AVID Pedagogy
Mary Catherine Swanson
Mary Catherine Swanson was born on September third, 1944 in Kingsburg, California, United States, and she started her education career in 1966 teaching Journalism and English at Woodland (California) High School. In 1980 she developed AVID and was "Convinced that marginal students can meet almost any challenge if they are given the support they need,...". In 1986 she left Clairemont High School and went to the San Diego County Office of Education. In 1992 she founded the non-for-profit AVID Center and was the executive director until she retired in 2008. Mary Catherine did something very significant; she created a class of thirty-two incoming students looking for a better education to help them achieve academic success in their classes. Over time in that class, the students were able to do advanced placement or honors classes. Swanson's goal of AVID for the students was to "grab the American dream." Mary Catherine had a cause to why she created such an amazing progra like AVID, Swanson primarily created AVID because ''she thought it was right for her students '' to have the opportunity to achieve academic succeess. After creating AVID and retiring, there were some effects. Starting off, AVID today impacts more that 400,000 low-income and under-served students in nearly 4500 schools and 16 countries. Mary Catherine has said "Teachers don't understand the power they have. They need to know it." Swanson is trying to get the point across to teachers that they have the power to lead students toward academic success.
Foundational Principals of AVID Pedagogy
This article explains that the Foundational principles of AVID can be described as WICOR. Wicor stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration , Organization, and Reading to Learn. Each of these fundamental properties are very important in the way that AVID teaches its students to study and learn. The foundational principles of AVID pedagogy are all so important in the development of an AVID student. Each foundational principle of AVID can be useful in its own way. Writing is important for reasoning of which that “writing is basic to thinking, learning and growth, requiring students to consider issues in new, complex ways, contributing to self-knowledge, and helping them to clarify and order experience and ideas'' Inquiry is important because it uses critical thinking some researchers have said that “thinking is not driven by answers but by questions,”. This quote shows that we should learn how to ask the questions instead of giving the answers. Collaborating is so important to AVID because it teaches students how to “help each other learn, thereby strengthening their own learning”. Organization is important in many parts of our life and AVID helps us prepare for our future by forcing us to be organized now. The R stands for Reading to Learn. To me this means having a strive for learning and always staying on top of your studies. This article states that “Skills such as “reading with purpose" can be scaffolded with more complex activities to ensure that students are connecting reading material to prior knowledge,”. As you can see Avids foundational principles are very important and they truly help a student work harder and more efficiently. The Foundational principles of AVID pedagogy was invented by Mary Cathorine Swanson. More information can be found about Mary's life and how it impacted AVId in the section labeled “Mary Cathorine Swanson”. In 1980 Mrs. Swanson invented WICOR to help her students learn more efficiently and help them succeed.
Lond term reasults/ Benefits {to the AVID program ect}
Mary Catherine Swanson is the founder of AVID and of the Foundational principles of AVID pedagogy. Herself alone has led to many long term benefits to AVID; considering that she is what created AVID in 1980. Both of us find that Mary Catherine's strive to help a group of people, that were strongly mistreated, and help AVID have a clear goal to help those around us has inspired us to work hard for the privilege we have been given, and to always help the community and people around us. We also think that Mary Catherine's idea of WICOR has helped AVID students work and study in a more efficient way.
