By the early 2000's, GCU was struggling maintaining its operations and quality of academics. Dwindling financial support caused them to fall out of the non-profit bracket in 2004. GCU then started focusing on nursing and education. Now, they are doing exceptionally well. Tuition Admissions and Academics Southern Baptist Church founded the university in 1949. At this time, it was known as Grand Canyon College. The first campus was an abandoned armory building in Prescott, AZ. Two years later, they relocated to Phoenix where they gained popularity.
