Real World Connection

We can see the idea of materialism becoming a higher being in today's western society as it slowly becomes an obsession in human nature- especially in modern day America. Our obsession has lead us to value materialism much more than human life and well-being; much like the truth behind conflict diamonds.

According to the Borgen Project; an organization created to help prevent world hunger, stated that it would cost $30 billion per year to end famine. In 2014 America spent $180.12 billion on media advertisement for materialistic items we do not necessarily need, such as jewelry and diamonds. Thus reinforcing the priorities of western societies we can see in Blood Diamond.

  • We can see Simmons' concentration is solely on the diamond being in his possession as he hands over the 2 million pounds in exchange.
  • While Solomon's eye contact is solely on his family as they exit the aeroplane and not on the money he is about to receive.

Establishing shot #2

6. Analyse how the use of language features shaped your response to one or more themes in the visual text.

  • The amount of precautions the company takes to keep what is simply, a rock, in pristine condition is abominable; as material is much more valued than human life and suffering (referring to the fact that it is a conflict diamond).

  • This solidifies the apparent impact of materialism in our western society today through the meticulous actions of protecting tangible property. This reinforces the idea of materials/items being highly valued and sought out for, more than those of emotions such as true happiness and love; intangible properties that cannot be bought.

  • This can be connected to today's society as we are heavily encompassed and bombarded with constant consumerism/materialism that it has almost become the norm.
  • Again, Simmon's concentration is soleley on the diamond he has just purchased from Solomon.
  • Whereas Solomon's concentration is soleley on being able to be with his family.

In our presentation, we have chosen to analyze the Establishing shot and Mis En Scène as our language features. We are focusing on the impact of materialism; how self-indulgence and constant consumerism has changed our moral values and shaped the western communities. In comparison to the simple wants and needs of those who have not been exposed to our western society composed of heavy materialism.

From these shots we can clearly see the priorities of each character.

Simmons' priority is the diamond rather than the miracle of a reunited family.

Solomon's priority is his family being alive, safe and reunited.

Mise En Scène

  • As we approach this scene, the diamond is heavily secured and encased with what looks to be bulletproof glass being wheeled away in a storage bank with upmost optimum security.
