Jurisdiction: When a court has the authority to decide a case.
Court of Appeals: The second highest ranking court in the state of Georgia.
They hear both civil and criminal cases. They preside over all felony trials. They7 also have exclusive jurisdiction over cases of divorce a land titles (ownership disputes) There are 49 superior courts or courts of original jurisdiction. They also have 207 judges.
Jury: A group of citizens chosen to hear evidence in a legal case and make a decision based on that evidence.

The appellate court of Georgia was established in 1906. They also have 12 judges that serve in 4 divisions. They deal with constitutional questions, land title disputes, the construction of wills, murder, election contests, habits corpus, extraordinary remedies, divorce and alimony and cases where original appellate jurisdiction lies with the Supreme Court.

Appellate Courts
They hear misdemeanors including most traffic violations. They issue search and arrest warrants, hold preliminary hearings in criminal cases, and try civil matters not reserved exclusively for the superior courts
Supreme Courts: Georgia's highest court
Probate Court: Dealing with wills and the estates of deceased persons is the role of the probate court.
Magistrate Courts:Limited jurisdiction county courts that issue warrants, hear minor criminal offenses, and civil hear civil cases involving amounts of $15,000 or less.
Georgia establish municipal courts to take care of traffic offenses, local ordinance violations, conduct preliminary hearings, issue warrants, and in sometimes hear misdemeanor shoplifting and possession of marijuana cases. Municipal court judges are often picked by the mayor, some are elected. There are more than 350 municipal courts in operation in Georgia.
Courts Of Limited Jurisdiction
These courts are the U.S. district courts. There are three in Georgia; U.S.the U.S. Northern District court, (there main office is in Atlanta) Middle District Court, (there main office is in Macon Georgia) and the U.S. Southern District Court(there main office is in Savannah. These are 3 out of 94 districts on the country that are organized through groupings called circuits. Georgia, Alabama and Florida are a circuit. So all the the federal courts within those states are in the same circuit.
The federal courts deal with cases that have to do with, Criminal cases brought by federal prospectors on for the U.S., Civil actions in which the United States is a party,and other cases and controversies.
