Importance in the past

- Chinese used it against the Mongolians when they were having a war.
- Gunpowder = meaning of "fire medicine" in China
- Chinese applied gunpowder on flamethrowers, rockets, bombs, and land mines
Importance in modern days
- People use it to develop mining, civil engineering, and multi stage rockets.
- They also use it in mortars and medicine.
- Another use was developing mountains (making tunnels) and street improvements.
Legacy
- These days the mixture of ammonium perchlorate and powder aluminium is used as the solid rocket booster that launch american space shuttles

- By the 8th century during the late Tang dynasty, a formula for gunpowder was established.
- Made by combining saltpetre and sulphur with charcoal.
- Gunpowder or 'huo yao' was first used to make fireworks and signal flares. Later simple hand-grenades were invented, which were thrown at the enemy using a catapult.
- Back then, the only way to bring down castle walls was to mine underneath and then burn the supports, causing a collapse.
