Question 2

Oliver Kesey

We also see how age is represented as the music in the background when we see the hero is more retro/ older and so represents him as being of an older generation as this music is more typical of adults than children. The fact that the victim is wearing tracksuit shows he is of the younger generation as we see that they usually wear more modern clothes which suggest that he is a typical teenager.

We see that gender is represented as the male villain is dominant in the scene which is shown by the way he is violent with the victim and the low angle shots looking up at him also connote that he is in control. He is shown in a negative way due to the violence in the scene. The victim however challenges the conventions as we see that he is portrayed as being vulnerable due to the high angle shots and the fact that the villain asserts physical dominance over him without him fighting back, this therefore challenges the stereotype of the male character being physically strong.

We see that the upper class is represented by the victim as he is wearing nice clothes which show that he has the money to be able to afford the clothes he is wearing. You can also link the retired hero into one of these classes as you could say that he is upper/middle class. This is represented by the fact that he is also wearing nice clothes such as jeans and a shirt for the morning and he lives in a relatively normal house which also looks nice on the inside. The furniture in the house are also expensive looking which again supports the idea that the hero lives in comfort and is more middle class. The fact that he is reading the newspaper shows that he is well educated as he wants to know about what is going on in the world. The big white radio/stereo shows also that he has money to be able to afford expensive things in his house. This is shown in a close up which creates the image that it is important so the audience pay attention to this. The fact that the hero seeming lives a life of solitude which is represented by the wider shots of the room demonstrate that he is alone most of the time as we don’t see anybody else with him, which is a stereotype of older/retired people.

My media product shows three characters each from a different social group. We see that the lower class is represented as the villain is wearing dark coloured clothes and they are slightly ragged. The fact that the victim is tied up by jump leads suggests that the villain is lower class as it shows he doesn’t have enough money to go and spend on rope. We also represent the villain as someone who is a criminal as he also commits small crimes such as parking where he shouldn’t and is shown as living of what he can as we see a sleeping bag and rough pillow in his car. All of these items and actions show him to be more of an outlaw and at this moment of a lower class. Also the connotation of the car being stolen is being created as it is a new and relatively expensive looking car but the items in the car denote that he is lower class, thus creating the impression it is stolen.

Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?
