Draco was an Athenian lawgiver/ politicain who lived in athens in the 7th century. Draco is best known for his harsh legal code that punished both trivial and serious crimes in Athens with death. He was given the task of codifying and organising the laws of Athens, This was the first time that laws had been writen down. Befor Draco, laws were known oraly. Writing the laws down was inspired by the Roman 12 tabels.
The Word Draconian came from Draco's harsh set of laws. The deffinition of Dracoian is exceedingly harsh punishment.
Draco's Law was created in 621 B.C.
In ancient Athens, Draco's law states that any offence agianst the law is deserving of death. In our legal system today, we do not have many laws that state death can be a proper punishment for crime. We do however have the death penality that is inforced for only the most sever crimes in some states such as Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, Colorado and others.
Draco's Law was the first record of writen law of it's time, The United states, as well as many other countrys have followed after this by having a writen set of rules for all to know. The United States for example has the Constitution.
As harsh as Draco's Law may seem, the people of athens addored Draco. Which oddley enough lead to his death. Draco would often go to the theater and when people noticed it was him they began to throw flowers and their robes at him, he was burried under all the items and when they dug him out they found that he had been sufficated and died.
