I think one of the reasons that contributes to the popularity of the 1960's is the amount of icons that the decade produced. From fashion icons such as Twiggy, to artists such as Andy Warhol and Peter Blake.
Music
In the 1960's, rock and roll was stepping out of the 3-chorded restraints of the 1950's and turning into something edgier and more daring. This took the form of the psychedelic and experimental bands, like The Seeds, and also bands like The Beatles that started the punchier "beat" music. The long hair of these bands and the clothes that they wore deterred older audiences and specifically drew in the young and bored who were hoping for a revolution like some kind of tame anarchy. 1960's music made a statement, which is why I think it appeals so much to young audiences still today.
Films
The iconic look of the 1960's os often represented in it's films. Here are some examples of film posters from the era.
This is my favourite film poster and I would love to create something that looks half as good as this. It looks simple, although it is complicated and the repitition really makes it stand out, as does the simple colour scheme. It looks very retro.
Film posters like these and album covers such as "Sgt. Peppers", "Revolver" and "Let It Bleed", left a definitive look for 1960's popular culture. Seeing as this decade is popular with my audience, I would love to incorporate some of the features of these things into my magazine cover and film poster.
Politics

I did a little bit of contextual research into world events and politics in the 1960s using the BBC link above. The decade was a time of revolution for the people and protests were happening frequently. America went to war in Vietnam, racism was being tackled and the Cold War was underway. In tense times it's no wonder that so much change was happening within the public domain.
