President Lincoln issues General War Order No. 1 calling for all US naval and land forces to begin a general advance by February 22.

President Lincoln appoints McClellan as general-in-chief of all Union forces after the resignation of Winfield Scott.

The Union Army under Gen. Irvin McDowell suffers a defeat at Bull Run 25 miles southwest of Washington.

Civil War begins

Virginia secedes from the Union, followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, forming an eleven state Confederacy.

Confederates open fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter

February 6, 1862

Victory for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Tennessee, capturing Fort Henry, and ten days later Fort Donelson.

April 20, 1861

February 9, 1861

Robert E. Lee resigns his commission in the US Army. Lee then becomes the command of the military and naval forces of Virginia.

There were many more battles fought throughout 1862 where lots of soldiers from both sides were wounded and killed. Some of the major battles include the First and Second Battles of Bull Run, The Battle of Shiloh, The Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Emancipation Proclamation: President Lincoln issued an executive order freeing many slaves and laying the groundwork for the Thirteenth Amendment.
