Q3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

During the research and planning stage of our coursework, we obtained some initial audience feedback of our chosen genre, Indie Pop through a questionnaire. We despatched the questionnaire to our target audience of teenagers.

We decided on the target audience of our media product based on the theory of ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’. Maslow stated that, ‘Humans strive for ‘self-actualisation’, to be unique from others and fulfil their full potential in life’.

As we know Indie Pop is a relatively new genre, we also understand that it will be more popular to our age group of teenagers, 15-23 than an older generation.

Questions we asked our participants in the questionnaire about the Indie Pop genre where as follows; What do you associate with an indie pop music video? What artists do you associate with indie pop? We also asked how they felt about ‘Marina and the Diamonds’ a leading indie pop artist in today’s charts.

The participant’s response was that they look for a good narrative and an interesting storyline. They also commented that Indie Pop videos are usually experimental, unique and individual.

The majority of our participants like Marina and the Diamonds as an artist due to her unique and quirky sense of personality.

For our product to succeed we need to understand what the target audience is looking for so that we can satisfy their needs

To appeal to our target audience we included elements of their interpretation of indie pop in our music video and ancillary tasks.

Personality

was the main factor in indie pop that our target audience was interested in. As they described Marina and the Diamonds as unique and quirky artist, we felt that we needed to create an artist of the same characteristics to fit the conventions of the genre.

And so we tried to create a fun, quirky and cheeky personality into our artist.

In the video we conveyed the artist’s personality through movement; such as gestures and mannerisms.

In the ancillary tasks the artists enhanced facial features, became more animated for still shots.

Target audience research also led to us think about these elements in our music video;

• A good storyline

• Experimental

• Unique

• Individual

In taking part in this initial audience feedback, it has influenced our final planning and decision making by allowing us to think about different aspects of indie pop and what our target audience are looking for in a music video. We have addressed these points of views by thinking about our artist personality and thinking about how to make our video interesting and entertaining for our audience.

Audience testing before completion

How would you describe the conventions of a Indie Pop music video?

‘Fun, Lively and Entertaining’

‘Comedic, Animated and Energetic’

‘Individual, Unique and Experimental’

‘Enjoyable to watch, shows of the performance of the artist’

During editing footage of our music video we asked an audience member to look at our footage so far and they gave some interesting feedback. The audience member recognised that because we have a variety of shots of the artist in the video the audience may get sidetracked and lose focus or interest on the artist and video.

So we decided to create a 'home' image of the artist running throughout the music video so that the audience have something to hook onto and be familiarised with. We chose the performance scene as are familiar image of the artist because it is when the artist looks most natural and less characterised like the 'job' images. In making this decision we brought an identity back to the artist making the music video more believable and entertaining for its audience.

When we had completed all our products; music video, magazine advert and digi pack. We gained some final audience feedback on our coursework.

Questions asked for feedback on our music video consisted of;

• How is it typical of a music video?

• What is unique about it?

• Does the video work?

• What is impressive / interesting about the video?

• Could it be better?

• Can you tell the genre of the music video?

Positive Feedback For Music Video

This video has unique aspects to it by including humour. Adding humour to the video allows the audience to have fun and enjoy watching it, as they get to see 'Taylor' in different characters and situations.

You can tell that the genre is Indie Pop, because it’s more experimental than pop videos, breaks barriers such as the weather woman when she clicks on the embarrassing picture.

The different techniques used in the video, e.g. when the artist is shown three times on the screen in the same setting is really impressive.

‘Oh No’ relates to a typical music video, because of the key attention to the setting and costume. Each has a purpose and looks cleverly thought out and placed throughout the video.

Negative Feedback For Music Video

• The night time shot could be a little lighter to establish the shot more clearly.

• Maybe more of a range of lighting in certain clips for example the drama room to make it stand out slightly more.

• Perhaps the green screen could have been a little neater in some areas.

Questions asked for feedback on our ancillary tasks consisted of;

• Do you think the products are typical of album covers/posters? If so in what ways is it similar?

• Does anything make it different or stand out from typical posters/ covers?

• Name two interesting/impressive elements from the ancillary tasks?

• Could the product be stronger – if so how?

• Can you sum up the brand image of ‘Taylor and the Rubies’ in one short sentence?

• Can you see a clear brand image?

One individual liked how the personality of the artist was shown in the print works like in most posters/ covers etc and thought it was a brilliant selling point.

Someone picked up on the fact that the text of the album name was over the artist and that made is visually interesting and more noticeable.

The use of mellow colours, similar font, outfits and artist personality; work well together. Making the print works easy on the eyes and that they were intrigued to know more about the artist.

Some found that they really liked the look of the album hanging from the frame on the poster, and how there was a continuous link to the video ‘Oh No’ in the prints whilst also bringing other elements to the artists personality which reflects their music in the indie/pop genre.

Some thought that the background colour on the front and back of the digipak could have been made more similar to make the album appear more professional.

Participants thought that the editing of the artist on the poster could have been stronger so that it doesn't appear that the artist is not actually stood next to the frame.

In Summary

Over all I am pleased with the amount of positive feedback that I received for our music video and ancillary tasks. Audience feedback on our video proved it does work and that it has been understood and enjoyed by our target audience as we must have met their needs from the initial audience feedback. I can also see which ways our poster and album have worked for the audience and how they can be slightly improved. It was nice to see how the audience realised that we did try to link the video to the poster and album, and how we wanted to give the artist their own stamp on the indie/pop genre. To sum up, audience feedback was a vital part in the making of our products and I believe they have been made to their full potential because of it.
