These requirements only apply to primary role BIRTHS.

Prenatal, newborn and postpartum exams can begin in the primary role whenever the field instructor deems the student ready.

Students need to be approved BEFORE they start Primary (Phase 3) Births

Academic Readiness

Conclusion

There are 3 requirements to be approved for Primary Births:

1-Academic Readiness

2-Experience Readiness

3-Skill Readiness and Preceptor Approval

Students need to have completed the following midwifery classes:

- Prenatal Care I (MDWF 338)

- Prenatal Care II (MDWF 340)

- Labor & Birth & Immediate Postpartum (MDWF 242)

- Postpartum Care (MDWF 246)

and they must be enrolled in the following classes:

- Prenatal Complications (MDWF 354)

- Labor & Birth & Immediate Postpartum Complications (MDWF 356)

Once a student is approved, she can attend births as primary under supervision. This does not mean that every birth she attends from that point on will be a primary birth--it is up to the preceptor to decide if a student has fulfilled the role of primary under supervision at each birth.

When you start attending primary births, it would be smart to make sure you have your MEAC Continuity of Care forms and your NARM Continuity of Care and Out of Hospital Birth forms ready to fill out, as well as your experience logs.

Experience Readiness

Students need to have attended at least 10 observed (Phase 1) births and at least 18 of their 20 required assistant (Phase 2) births with an approved preceptor.

Logs need to be turned in for these births before applying for primary births.

Skill Readiness and Preceptor Approval

The Field Skills Assessment is a tool for the field instructor to evaluate whether a student has the necessary skills and is ready to act as primary under supervision.
