Teaching How to Read

Making Reading Apart of the Classroom

Teachers have so many methods to instill reading skills into their students. Through using phonetic reading words, word walls, rhymes etc. students will absorb the tools they need in order to read.

In order to ensure that students read the amount that they need to, classrooms need to incorporate reading in every way possible. Through classroom libraries, research projects and other reading activities, teachers can provide students with opportunities to read at their appropriate levels.

Assessment

There are many aspects that contribute to reading and comprehension. As teachers it is important to understand the contributing elements that enable our students to understand what they read.

In order to properly monitor progress, teachers need to perform assessments. These assessments give teachers a clear idea of where each child is holding and can help the teacher choose the next step the child should take to improve his reading. Having concrete information about children's growth is vital for students' development.

Comprehension

Vocabulary

Learning vocabulary increases students' reading comprehension. For ESL students they need to learn even more vocabulary so that their English skills will improve.

There are different methods to improve students' comprehension. Having students discuss the book and question the author helps students understand what the author is wishing to state. Note taking and KWL charts are also great ways to help children's comprehension.
