He spent less than a fortnight in Greystones.

Who was

Colonel

Frederick

Burnaby?

Why were so many places in Greystones, Co.Wicklow named after him?

Frederick Burnaby was born

in Bedford in England in 1842.

Today in Greystones, many places are called

after Colonel Frederick Burnaby.

Shortly afterwards he was killed in hand to hand fighting in the Sudan. He was forty two years old.

Frederick was

about 17

when he joined

the Royal Horse Guard.

With no chance

of active service,

he looked for adventures

travelling through

Russia and Spain.

But in 1901 when building began

on the land in Greystones

that Elizabeth inherited from

her father, she called the area

'The Burnaby Estate'. in honour

of her first husband,

Colonel Frederick Burnaby

His wife recovered her health and

went on to be a pioneering mountaineer.

She also married twice more.

In 1875, he wrote a book about the winter he spent

travelling on horseback through Russian Asia.

Queen Victoria reportedly fainted at the news. Grown men wept on the streets of London.

All this was to change! In 1878,

Colonel Burnaby met

Elizabeth Hawkins Whitshed f

rom Greystones.

She was 18 and she had

come to London as a debutant

to be presented at court.

This book 'A Ride to Khiva'

brought Frederick Burnaby

fame and fortune.

It was said that

the Queen

had no more

loyal a subject,

the army no

finer officer

and the country

no finer a patriot

than Colonel

Frederick Burnaby.

There is a house called Khiva

in the Burnaby Estate in Greystones.

But as yet, Colonel Burnaby

had no connection with Greystones.

Colonel Burnaby was six foot four,

a soldier, adventurer and writer. He

was also nearly twice Elizabeth's age.

Colonel Burnaby was wounded

while fighting with the British Army

in the Eygptian Campaign.

Elizabeth was very impressed by

Colonel Burnaby

who was a celebrity of the time.

Colonel Burnaby successfully

crossed the English Channel

in a hot air balloon.

Elizabeth returned to Greystones

to give birth

to her only child

Harry St.Vincent Burnaby.

Elizabeth moved to Switzerland. The doctors told

her that the climate would be good for her health.

They travelled to North Africa on honeymoon, but due to ill health, Elizabeth couldn't continue.

He came to

Greystones

for 14 days,

to visit

the home

of his future

bride.
