13 going on 30

film trailer

Genre

13 going on 30 is related to the genre comedy,

but can also relate to drama and romance, therefore 13 going

30 is an example of a rom com which is a hybrid genre which is

a recent popular hit and is part of generic cycle. The generic cycle

being the body swap theme which has been a major hit with audiences.

films such as 17 again, freaky friday and 13 going on 30.

the trailer 13 going on 30 does have repertoire of elements

like other trailers such as the typical teenage girl bedroom

with a mirror, girly colours etc. This is traditional to display

that she is only a young girl to start with, but also helps to

show what year it is.

The idea of one wish can change everything is a common

repetoire of events, which is used in many films such as 17 again

and big aswell as 13 going on 30. This giving the message be careful

what you wish for, but also gives the audience hope that the

characters get what they wish for and turns out to be beneficial.

Another typical scene is used in the trailer this being the girly sleep

over where girls like to dress up, do makeovers, sing and dance to

music. This is used a lot in trailers but inparticularly in 13 going on 30

it displays Jenna still has the mind of a child and still loves to have

fun with friends.

A major element of many films is people falling in love, this is is displayed

in the form of two best friends who havent spoke in years and meet again

and fell in love with eachother by meeting and helping eachother. Displaying

the chemistry is also adding to the idea of falling in love which makes the

audience hope they end up together.

Another major repetoire of elements is the embarrassing parents who still

constantly treat a teenager like a baby, because they want there child to

still be a baby. But this is shown in a variety of ways when Jennas parents

use a video camera to document her birthday but film her mum pulling tissue

out of her bra saying she doesnt need it etc.

generic conventions create audience expectations. Generic conventions

are what the audience expect to see and feel. Pleasures of difference

place a refreshing twist on the gnere.

A form of generic convention is character types, the audience expects

to see a hero and a villain as the typical character types. But the film

does display a hero (Jenna) but it doesnt reveal who the potential villain

could be but this is good as it displays a pleasure of difference because

it makes the audience wonder if Jenna will come accross an enemy.

An example of a typical narrative set piece is the teenagers bedroom which

the audience would expect to see when representing the teenager and is

a change from the typical high school scenes.

another typical narrative set piece is someone finding someone who they

enjoy being with and love to be around and we see there chemistry on screen

and epect them to be together at the end.

Narrative

Another theorist is Claude levi Strauss who developed the

idea of binary oppositions. A binary opposition is opposites

such as good vs evil.

In the trailer at the start is child vs parent, the child is

fighting to be who they want whilst the parents still see

them as a baby. This will help sell the film as it will make

the audience wonder whether she will end up like her parents.

Another major opposition is young vs age, which the the character

jenna goes through, being treated young with her parents constantly

on her back then the next she is on her own and needs to take

responsibility. This will sell the film as this is what the major plot of

the film is and makes it interesting to see how they would cope in an

adults shoes.

The narrative analyses how the stories are told and structured. The film is in a reasonable linear narrative order with the equilibrium being the introduction of the characters at the start this being when we see the main character as a teenager longing to be older. But when the equilibrium gets upset which consists of obstacles and actions the character has to overcome. The point when the character changes to a 30 year old woman and having to act older than she is and living day to day life as an adult. But the film doesnt reveal a solution such as changing back to her younger self but does reveal she falls in love.

Another narrative theory is Vladimir Propp and he came up with Character

types such as the hero, villain, heroine, helper, donor and mentor.

The main character type is Jenna's childhood friend matt who is percieved

to be the helper who is there for all the way through the film helping her

with her job projects and just being a good friend. But can also be seen as

guiding her to get back to the way she is. This role will attract people as

they may assume that they are good friends who may fall in love at the end

as there chemistry is shown in the trailer.

At the end of the film trailer when Jennas female friend drags her away from the

restaurant she could be labelled the character type mentor because she is

stopping jenna getting into serious trouble such as prison.

But also the parents at the start could be represented as the villains because they

were embarrassing Jenna when she was trying to act grown up this is a good

representation of how actual teenagers feel that there parents are 'villains' and spoil

things for them

All narratives have some form of structure in this case the trailer

has a three part structure (Todorov theory).

This features an equilibrium which involves the introduction of the main character

as her normal self, this is a good idea because the audience can see what the person

looked and acted like before the change. But also we as the audience will know who the

characters are so we can recognise who they all relate to later in the narrative.

The use of the prop on the mirror 'Jenna' gives us an indication of her name and what

she looks like in her reflection before the change.

However the next step of todorov's theory was a disequilibrium which is the upsetting

of an equilibrium which usually involves overcoming tasks and actions. In the trailers

case the equilibrium is disrupted by the 13 year old going into the future and being in the

body of a 30 year old not any body but hers! She will then have to overcome obstacles to

change back to who she was. The 30 year old teenager, is shot looking in the mirror again

the same position as she was before which suggests she is still herself but shocked with

what has happened to her this would be an interesting idea to corporate into my work.

But the new equilibrium or resolution which is the restoration of order in the narrative

which doesnt have to be the character changing back but in 13 going on 30 they did it so

the childhood friends fell in love which restored peace between them after falling out

and not talking for years. This is a good idea as it doesnt reveal whether Jenna had to

just live being thirty forever or being her normal self persuades the audience to watch

the whole film.

The trailer uses the enigma code, an enigma intrigues the audience to watch and gives a sense of mystery. This is shown in 13 going on 30 when Jenna wishes to be older and sequence of dates is brought in, this makes the audience wonder whats going to happen or what she is going to look like.

But also when the trailer ends without revealing whether she will be with Matt or even change back to her normal self, this displays mystery but also makes the audience hope that there is a happy ending and encourages them to

want to watch to find out if it all comes true or if there is any shocking twists.

Themes are used quite a lot in movies, but in 13 going on 30

the main themes are hope, love, friendship and growing up.

these are apparent because Jenna at the start of the film

hopes to be older when the dust is sprinkled infront of her.

But also the chemistry between her and matt looks like they

love eachother but we can also see there friendship.

But we can also see the growing up when she has changed to an

adult but also when she has to adjust to being an adult.

technical codes

Graphic design

This is the last logo we see on the trailer which

includes the date of the films release and where

you can find out more information. On each side

is the production and distribution teams to display

who helped make the movie but could also be shown

as a reminder of who to go to, to find out the latest info on the

film. The only thing in a different colour is the date which is in

orange to highlight the important date so the audience dont

miss out as it has high visibility to catch attention. The colour

orange represents joy and enthuasiam. The use of the white

background brings the writing to the foreground and easier to read

from a distance.

This introduces who produced the film

but also the use of the word presents

gives the audience the indication that the

trailer is about to begin.

The simple white background gives continuity

from the other logos. The blue represents power

and depth which also gives the logo a cool and calm

look suggesting the film is a feel good film

Columbia is the film production and distribution

company, placing there logo in the trailer gives

credit to them and make them well known. It also

displays to the audience who was involved in the

making of the film. The image connotates that

Columbia aim to bring a brighter future and clear entertainment.

The main title of the film is quite simple and easy to read,

especially with the pace of the trailer being quite fast the title

will need to be to still be recognised.

The use of the background bring the text to the foreground

and clearer to read from a distance. However the use of orange

and purple contrasts with the white well to grab attention to the

audience. But also he colours are quite feminine which

will also appeal to the audience. The text is bold and legible

making it stand out and the audience will be more interested to

read it.

This is the producer of the movie

there logo is featured to promote

themselves and if the audience want

to know more about the film they can

use revolution studios.

Sound

Non-diegetic- Sound what cant be heard by the character

Girls just wanna have fun- This is an 80's song by Cyndy

Lauper which is suitable for the set of 13 going on 30, it is

used when Jenna is a teenager in the 80's to help the audience

identify what year she is in. But also could of been used to reflect

her personality bubbly, confident and wants to have a good time.

What I like about you- This song is by Lillex and is a striking

contrast compared to cyndy laupers, this is used to display the rapid

change by using the music from different times.

Diegetic - sounds what can be heard by the characters.

Clock alarm- This is the rude awakening Jenna

recieves when she has become older. But also it goes

with the text of the dates forwarding then the alarm

clocks completely stops it. An alarm wakes you up for

the day but it wakes Jenna up for a suprise.

Thriller- This song by michael Jackson was also released

in the 80's, it was used in the trailer at the work function

to create enjoyment. This may of been used to strike a bond

between Matt and Jenna and reliving there childhood.

Ice ice baby- This was used by Jenna's future boyfriend to

seduce her, but she didnt find it appealing at all. This song

may have been used due to some of the lyrics such as baby

and the way it is said in the song

Voice over

Voice over of Jenna- This lets the audience hear

her thoughts before the change and what she

wishes to happen. This is a good idea to have

the characters thoughts because we as the

audience can relate and emphasise with her.

Narrator voice- This is done to help tell a story

to the audience to keep them on track with the

story, but the characters cant hear what

is being said.

Use of camera

There is a use of closed framing when

Jenna turns into an adult, The only subjects

in the frame is Jenna, a mirror and her relection

suggesting she is now trapped in herself and can only

see her new body. So the closed framing contributes

to the idea of entrapment.

The shallow depth of field focus on the magic dust by putting

the rest of the objects out of focus, symbolises its importance

as this is the catylist of the transformation. so putting it in focus

automatically makes the audience think that this magic dust is

going to be important later in the film.

The use of a tilt shot of the boy sprinkling glitter on

Jenna. The shot begins from his hand with the bag of

glitter, then the camera follows the glitter to reveal Jenna

making her wish. The is an interesting shot because it

reveals what initially occurred to build up to the transformation.

But it also helps tell the story and give the audience hope that

wishes come true.

Eyeline!

In the elevator scene Jennas eyeline

is in the upper third whilst the young

friends eye line is in the middle third.

This could simply just display the height

and difference between them. But also

could give the message adults are more

dominant, free and have more power over

children. But does Jenna act like an adult?

During the birthday scene a medium longshot

is used to display the location but also reveal to

the audience what Jenna was dressing up for

(birthday party) but it also gives us a flavour

of what life her age was like and what her and

her friends would wear. But the shot may have

been used to put more emphasis on the location

and to set the scene to tell a story to the audience

on the build up of the transformation.

Mise en scene

In terms of facial expression when Jenna

has transformed and wakes up the shock

what comes on her face does make the film

more realistic as we can see her emotion and

how it has affected her. I will have to work on this

when I start mine.

Clothing

To be able to work a contrast between Jenna as a

teenager and when she is 30. The director used the

80's to create a distinctive difference between it.

When Jenna is 13 she wears typical 80's clothing

bright, colourful and outrageous. But she is also

wearing very girly colours like pink but also a

skirt and top. But her clothing also represents her

wanting to look like a young lady and grown up.

When Jenna is older she has a variety of outfits but

i think the one what stood out for me was the one

she wore to the work function as it still represents

her childlike taste with the bright colours such as

orange, green and blue but it does make her look

grown up but still have the childlike features.

This location has an important reference to displaying

who Jenna is showing her personality with the use of the

mirror displaying teenagers care a lot about there appearance,

but also the random objects convey that she likes to keep memories

e.g, the hawaiin flowers. But also of course the displaying of her name

on the mirror introduces who the character is.

Another location is the work function hall, which is set like a disco

with the multicoloured lights, and Dj booth. Which gives a fun atmosphere

but also the lighting is quite dim so the audience can feel the party atmosphere.

This is when Jenna discovers she is working for

magazine company poise but also learns about

working life, the workplace has bright lighting

which could suggest she enjoys working there

but being a part of the team is a dream.

Editing

Also the transition flash is used

a lot in the trailer maybe because

to display the instant change and it

could be like flashbacks of her

experience, introducing us to her

story and experience.

A lot of the editing is the use of the

transition zooming out at a fast pace

this could be done to express how Jenna is feeling that everything is going on around her is fas and reality is hitting her.

The pace of the trailer was quite fast

paced, this maybe because Jennas life

went so fast and she cant keep up, but

maybe making the trailer fast pace will rise

the tension making it more exciting.
