Codes and Conventions:

Eliza Dootlittle has a similar style to Paloma Faith.

What's noticeable is that throughout the video, similar to Faith's, is the use of close ups and extreme close ups, each time revealing their 'wacky' make-up and style.

Mika's style, approach and genre is again very alternative.

This print screen shows how the backdrop to the medium close up is a computerised special effect, although at the beginning of Faith's 'Upside Down' video a special effect is not used a similar shaped backdrop is used, connoting the quirkiness of the two artists.

Florence and The Machine - Shake it out.

Florence and The Machine and Paloma Faith's videos have a similar convention in the respect that they both have starnge and alternative props featured; consequently the taget audience then expect this convention to be used ever more frequently in similar music videos, thus then creating a code.

Within the 'alternative' genre there are many uses of the camera angle, for example:

  • Establishing low angle shots
  • Close ups - they focus on the musicians face and their mouths as they are lip syncing to the music. This shot also helps the audience to grasp what the artist looks like and what their style is too.
  • Pans

Unlike other music genres many 'alternative' videos don't have a narrative, I believe this is because of their total uniqueness. There is still a performance, but hypothetically speaking, there is no real reason why they are performing. An example of this could be although its not from the 'alternative' genre are many of the 'X Factor Winners Singles' they're basically just a compilation of stills, instead of puposely filmed footage.

Many of the editing and sound techniques used in the 'alternative' genre use more creative techniques, such as:

  • Jump Cutting
  • Ellipsis
  • Lip Synching
  • Diegetic Sound.
