A2 Media Evaluation.

In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions

of real media products?

For my movie poster for my trailer 'The Outsider', I used the typical features that you would see in a movie poster. I have included the billing block at the bottom of my poster and also I have included 2 star ratings and small reviews of the film from 'total film' magazine and 'empire' magazine. I have included the 4 main characters names at the top of the poster as that is what the audience will be looking for so they can relate to the characters in the trailer. Most of all I have made the title of the film the main incentive of the poster as I want it to be the main focus of the poster. I have included a tagline underneath the name of the film. I have used a 'scary forest' picture as the background of the poster as that is where the film is set. Also in the corner of the poster I have used a close up of an eye which I think represents that someone is watching them in the forest.

The colour scheme within my movie poster is in keeping with the whole of the poster. The picture for the background of the poster is a black and white photograph of a forest as my movie is set in the woods about a group of three teenagers who are camping. I thought it was better to use only two colours black and white so the poster wasnt crowded and looked professional. In the bottom corner of the poster there is an eye which was colour first of all but I thought it would look better if it was in black and white to be in keeping with the whole colour scheme.

For the main logo on my movie poster I have used photoshop to create it and have used the font 'Charlemagne Std'. I think this look like a scary font which relates to the genre of the movie that I have decided to create. I decided not to use and shadows or borders around the font as I feel it would of made the logo to fussy.

I decided to find a movie poster of the same genre that I have decided to base mine on. The same features that both mine and the horror house movie posters have are that they both have one large image which fills the whole of the background. I have also inserted the 4 main actors names at the top of the poster; the reason why I beleive they should be put at the top of the page is even though it is at the top its not the first thing that people look at but the second thing. People are more likely to go and watch the film if the actors in it are ones that they like and can relate to. Also my movie poster and The Ring movie poster are similar as they both only have 2 colours in the

poster 'black and white'. I also took the idea of using the billing block off the ring poster and felt like it would be a good feature for my poster. In all three of the movie posters there isn't any pictures of the actual pictures of the actors in the films. I think you should only

do that when the actors are well known enough to sell the movie themselves.

Overall, I believe that my movie poster both uses and develops the forms and

conventions of real media products. I think I have done well in making the poster

as I have stuck to what I have seen on other movie posters, not overloading them with

a lot of pictures or several different colours. I think the font I have used for the

name of the film is very distinctive and is in keeping with the horror genre. I also liked the

way I only used the two colours black and white in the movie poster to pormote a more horror scene and isn't over powering.

This is my movie magazine front cover. I have taken inspiration from both Empire Magazine and Entertainment Weekly Magazine. I like the colours which I have used as again they are not overpowering and make it look unproffesional; I have only used three colours 'red, white and black' which I think go together perfectly and make the cover look professional. I have used puffs, strapline, pugs, headline and masthead.

As you can see by the three movie magazine front covers I have got my inspiration from the two of them both Entertainment Weekly and Empire magazines. They both feature the large masthead at the top of the cover and have a continuous colour scheme through out the cover. As the cover states 'THE OUTSIDER MOVIE SPECIAL', I used the same font which is on the movie poster also, to make a synergy between the two. I did not want to over crowd the cover by using lots of different colours and more than one picture on the cover.

As you can see both of the mastheads are similar, they both have a coloured name and then another colour which is in the scheme around the name of it. They both have the date and the price around the area of the masthead, this makes it easier for the audience to find them. Above the masthead there is also a tagline which is a feature that is in the magazine which will heighten the sales of the magazine.

I believe that overall my own movie magazine front cover looks authentic and I think I have really portrayed all of the features that a real magazine front cover would have, in my own. I think that the synergy between the movie poster and the movie magazine front cover has made it look more authentic. I have used the image of Phil for the main image as I feel like thats what would make that specific magazine stand out most as the image is bright; I also took the picture with Phil in a stance where it looks like he is really engaging with the reader.

I believe my movie trailer incorperates most of the features that a professional movie trailer would have.

- It attracts the audience, making them want to find out more and watch the whole movie.

- Genre is easily known to the audience just by listening to the music and watching the first few scenes in the trailer.

- The story line is evident to the audience.

- Slowly builds from the start to the finish making more of an attracting trailer to the audience.

- Music starts off a bit scary but still calm then builds up to a more up beat and fast pased drawing the audiences interest of the movie in.

I think that the soundtrack fits in well with the trailer as it starts off quiet but still scary, creating a mysterious atmosphere and then builds up when more action happens in the trailer. Towards the end of the trailer the music is carefully put together to create an epic conclusion to the trailer.

Another way in which my trailer uses conventions of movie trailers is that at the start of the trailer it follows a story line and conveys to the audience what is the theme and genre within the film and what the storyline is without actually watching the film.

Overall I believe that my trailer challenges what is expected of movie trailers. It follows Propps Theory, Stauss Theory; and Roland Barthes Theory. My trailer is mysterious and exciting. Questionaing and gives the film a great name.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

I believe that my movie trailer, magazine and poster all have synergy which

makes it obvious that they are for the same film and make a brilliant

marketting campaign.

My products mostly conincide using the same colour scheme and fonts, the iconic font I have used for the name of the film will be one that will be remembered for that film only. I used various filters using iMovie within my movie trailer to make the trailer seem darker and depressing; I did not want it to be too light as that would not make the movie look dark or scary. I made my movie poster look very scary and would make the genre of the movie seem obvious.

I like the fact that I did not use any of the actors pictures on my movie poster as it

keeps the theme of it being a mysterious film active. Although I didnt use pictures I did

use the actors names at the top of the movie so there would be some knowledge to

the reader of who the actors where in the movie.

I believe that the effectiveness between the magazine front cover and the poster is both good and bad effectiveness. It is good in the aspect that they are both not exactly the same in both seen as I have not used photographs of the actors in the movie poster and I have in the magazine but it still delivers to the audience about the same film. But it is also bad in the fact that they both do not deliver the message in the same way. The movie magazine is not scary but does still deliver as it uses the same fonmt as which is used on the poster.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

I have completed a questionnaire using Google Documents for fellow students to fill it out about my movie trailer. I shared it with the people who had views my trailer and thought that they would have the best opinions on my movie trailer.

From the questionnaire we recieved both good and bad results. We did not recieve any 1 or 2 star votes for the rating of our trailer but we recieved 3, 3 star ratings, 5, 4 star ratings and 5, 2 star ratings.

When asked about their initial thoughts of my trailer, the results that come back were all good.

We also recieived some constructive criticisms about the trailer, stating that when the trailer begins it takes quite a while to actually get into all the action and too see how scary the film will actually be.

Overall, I believe that the positive comments completely overpower the negative comments about my trailer. Considering we had a very low budget to make the trailer then I think we did a remarkable job in doing such a good trailer.

This is the website that I have completed all of my research and planning on. The website has helped me organise and display all of my coursework neatly for the examiner to see and mark.

This was a crucial programme to use while creating my coursework. I needed to use it to look at different trailers and soundtracks to research what would be good for my own trailer. I also needed youtube to actually upload my trailer so it could go on my blog.

The internet was an absoloute necessity for my entire coursework. I needed it to complete all my research, without it I would not of been able to look at hundreds of trailers and listen to soundtracks to make the editing of my trailer the best it could be. Also without it my coursework would of had to be done on paper instead of using Blogger.

I would not of been able to edit my trailer professionally, magazine or poster without these programmes; I would of had to use windows movie maker and paint which would of looked like a childs work. Both of the programmes are used in the professional industry and I take great pride in being able to use them.

Using this programme enabled me to create a very professional looking presentation to evaluate all of my coursework. Without this programme I would of had to use Microsoft Powerpoint which would of been very boring and not very professional looking.
