Logical Problem Solver
- When Thomas was captured as a slave he problem solved by joining the British army.
- Thomas did not know what to do when he was the Black slaves' representative. So he found out what he should do by listening to other Black slaves.
- Thomas did not know how to receive freedom. But then it hit him. He went to the Royal Government and persuaded them to give black slaves land and freedom.
Resourceful
- When Thomas was a slave he used Dunmores Proclamation to obtain freedom
- Thomas Peters took the risk of being caught when he ran away from his owner to join the British Army and gain freedom
- To persuade the Royal Government he gathered the signatures of the cheated black slaves. He used that to persuade the Government to give blacks freedom and land
- Joining the British army was very risky. It was a big chance that he would die in battle. However if he joined the army he would have gained freedom which he valued above everything else
- Thomas was very poor. He could not take a boat to London to meet the Royal Government. He collected funds from fellow black slaves.
- While traveling to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick he took the risk of being re slaved to gather signatures and funds in hopes that the Blacks might receive their reward of freedom

- Thomas was very self-motivated. He didn't need anyone to tell him to run away from his owner. He set his own goals
- When Thomas joined the army it was not because of other peoples influences. It was because he motivated himself to do whatever it took to be free

- When Thomas traveled across the world in hopes of gaining freedom for black slaves it was out of his own will. His main mission in life was to obtain freedom for blacks. He never needed anyone to tell him what to do

- Thomas brought many slaves into Freetown and many Black slaves lived freely
- Freetown was a place where everybody lived as an equal
- Thomas then became a founding father of Sierra Leone
- Sadly Thomas Peters passed away on June 25th 1792
Taking Initiative
- When Thomas was a slave he took initiative and ran away and became a runaway slave
- Thomas longed for freedom so he took initiative and joined the British army for their promise of freedom
- Thomas traveled to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick at the risk of being reslaved
- He gathered the signatures and funds from Black slaves that did not get their rewards
- On 1791 he set sail to London and pleaded the Royal Government to give black slaves a part of Sierra Leone
- Thomas was given land and instructed to bring other Black slaves into that land
- When the Black slaves did not receive freedom Thomas went to the Royal Government and persuaded them to give the Black slaves freedom and land

- Born in 1738 (?)
- Grew up in Nigeria
- He was kidnapped as a young man by the French to be a slave
- He was sold to the British
- In the early 1770s he worked in Wilmington, North Carolina as William Campbell's slave
- The Black soldiers were called the Black Pioneers
- During the war Thomas gained the title of sergeant because of his natural ability to lead
- In 1784 the war was finally over, however the Black slaves did not receive their freedom or their land
- The angered slaves elected Thomas Peters to be their representative

- In 1775 the outnumbered British were desperate to crush the American Revolution
- Lord Dunsmore announced a proclamation stating that all Black runaway slaves would gain freedom by joining the British army (or being a Black Loyalist)
- Thomas and many others took this opportunity to escape from their owners and join the British
army
