In this activity, students will
research all the apects of
integration/segregation.
The students will be assigned different roles and will research as much information as they can on their assigned role. Then students will come together and work on a final project.
Role #1: The President
As President at the time of integration,
explain
1. Who are you? When did you come into office?
2. What did you do to finally get integration passed? When did this happen? Why did you want to push the issue?
3. What school integrated first? Where was it located? Where was the last? Where was it located?
4. Describe all the issues that you faced while trying to get schools to integrate. Describe what you saw on a day to day basis.
Role #2: African American Student
attending an integrated school for
the first time.
As the African American Student, please explain
1. What are Jim Crow laws? Explain a few of them that would affect rules at school.
2. Explain what school was like before and after integration.
3. Is it better now? Is it worse? Explain your opinion with facts.
4. Explain how the white parents acted when schools were integrated. Were they for or against it? How did white students act?
Role #3: Ex Slave Owner

As the ex slave owner please explain:
1. When did slavery end? What caused it to end?
2. What state or area was the first to abolish slavery? When did this occur?
3. What are your views on integration?
4. Describe how African Americans were treated from slavery to integration. Has anything changed? If so, how much? When did African Americans finally become equals?
Role #4: African American Activist
As the African American activist please explain
1. Who are you? What did you do?
2. Why did you stand up against segregation?
3. Did you do it alone? Did you have followers? If so, who were they?
4. Explain in detail what the outcomes of your act were and if anything changed because of you.
Each individual should create a Microsoft Photo
Story about their feelings and what is going on at this time through their eyes. Try to use the voice recording to read your story.
After all the individual research is done,
the group will come together to produce
a 4-8 minute skit involving their individual
roles.
Videotape the skit and post it on youtube.
