How did you use media technologies in the contruction and research planning and evaluation stages.
Internet
We used the internet firstly for our research into making our documentary. We used many vaired sites to help us understand how we should lay out our documentary as well as gathering facts about tea to use in our voice over. An example of this was http://www.tea.co.uk/teafacts .
We found it helpful to find relevan archive footage and also for our print advert and radio adverts which we documented to make the codes and conventions and also to give us background knowledgge to make our own.
we used sites like..
Within the internet we used a technology called Blogger.
This was extremey helpful to the contrustion of our documentary as this is where my owkr has been planned, stored and documented to keep my work in order and represents the making of the final peice we have made.
It is also used to present our work for the exam board.
On Blogger we uploaded images and videos of our work by linking them to youtube and embeding them onto our post.
We uploaded footage like our target audience feedback.
TO upload an imago or video the icon must be selected for an image or video.
By selecting this icon, the photos can be uploaded to put it onto the blog. With an option to upload multipule images up to five, it can be very useful for example when i was uploading graphs to my audience research.
This section lets you organise your images with layout which comes in handy when uploading more than one image, so you can put them along side each other.
And finaly upload the image to be
displayed on the blog page.
We also uploaded other images and graphs relating back to our work.
We used other sources of technology to help in the creating of our documentary...
Microsoft word.
We used this when writting our voice over and radio voice over scrifts as well as drafting some of our work like producing our questions and results.
Microsoft exel also came in handy when producing our results from questionaires and forming graphs to display our results.
Paint was another technology device we used to take screen grab images of our work to upload as images by changing them to a JPEG for images I could insert into my blog.
Filming
In the construction of our media product, one source of technology we used was a digital camera. This device was used to record all our footage for the documetary like interviews, cut aways, voxpops and extra footage incase we diverted from our storyboards. We also used the camera for our opening tittles for the effects of a fallen jar of tea bags spelling our title and to give the effect of the tea bags moving them selves. Also, the camera was used to take still images for our print advert and was involved to make our radio advert.
A tripod which was extremely usefull to steady our camera, give it a proffession look and made moving the camera into differnt places for lines up easy and we could adjust it to keep to our codes and conventions to keep good eyeline and positioning our the people we were filming.
A battery was used so we could go and film for longer periods of time and capture more footage.
We also used head phones and a microphone. We felt this was appropriate to ensure the sound of our documentary was clear for our audience and professional. The microphone especially helped as during our voxpops in WArrington town center, it was very loud with background noises and it was important to focus the sound on our interveiwee to make them stand out and keep the auidiences attention on them and not what was going on around
In hindsight, our tape was most relvant as it was used on every occasion we filmed, stored the footage we captured and was then used to store several outtakes of events and with the help of log in sheets we could go back to all our footage when it came to editing.
Within this we also used our mobile phones and a seperate camera to capture the events we filmed to put onto our blogs for example this image.
When it came to editing for a our final peice, we used many new technologies to give us the best chances of success for example..
Adobe photo shop.
we used this technology mainly for our print advert.
I kept to the codes and conventions by using simple imagery and chose an image of a tea pot to directly stand out to our target audience and to give elements of the documentary from which it is also seen in from the start.
I cut the image out from the background by used the magic wand tool to shadow the object and by changing the path and making it an overlaying image i took it out from the back ground to form a new image
Then by isolating the areas in which i wanted to change i used the same tool to change the hue/saturation of the stipes in the tea cosy and change them to a colour to compliemtn the logo.
I chose to use the same colour from the image for the font so as not to distract it from the main image. Also the colour of the image is very natural coloured, this links in with tea being natural and also give the image more of a calming effect.
I then used the internet to get a logo image of our channel ITV1 and used paint to crop out the background. I then imported the image on photoshop and applied it to the right hand corner screen. THe yellow and green I felt worked well both being warm colours it would stop the pring advert clashing.
On my first attempt of the print advert I decided to use a darker background. I used the magic wand tool to keep the shadow and then applied my graphics.
However, after talking to my group we decided that a more simple and brighter background would be better appropriate for the print advert and also that it would convert with codes and conventions to hopefully make it more successful.
This shows how simple imagery is most effect. We used research from the channel four advert print outs as they follow all the codes and conventions.
Adobe premier was used for most of our other work like the documentary, the radio advert and also in editing for our target audience research and the feedback i used for my evaluation technique.
I found this technology quite difficult at first but with help I was able to learn new and exciting ways to make a sucessful documentary.
This technology helped us put together our documentary as it was here we edited through our log in sheets and after capturing, we were able to edit our cut aways, voxpops, interveiws and other screen shots.
For creating the radio trailer, we used adobe by selcting the parts we wanted along the time line and locking the audio section and deleting the video time line. This gave us actual parts fomr the documetnary without the imagery.
To add our own music bed we used another level of audio and selected areas of music we had pre-uploded and moving them through the 'in' 'out' selections to put into our trailer.
one of the more difficult things we had to do was using a blue screen. We chose to do this to add a mise-en-scene onto our interveiw with a sociology teacher James Hill.
For this, we has to use the video effects to transfr colour. Firstly, we had to take out shadows by altering the colour shades in sections before replacing the colour with a final image of a tea cup to relate back to the subject of tea.
Also in our interveiw with James it was in a very echoing space which effected the noise levels which we had to alter by dragging the solid yellow bar which runs through the audio of the interveiw down to a lower level so it matched with the music bed and also to match the level from the rest of the documentary.
In the opening titles, we used the effect of fallen tea bags to spell the words 'Milk and two sugars'.
However, we had used the shots of a table and as the picture was out this was clearly visable and made the shots look off balance. On video effects, we had to change the positioning of the screen with possition percentages so it would overlap the screen and cut off. We then repeated this for all the different shots to give a balanced look.
Also we wanted the titles run smoothly and with more thatn 15 shots we felt the timing was too slow even though each shot was onlu a second long. To correct this we had to speed up the speed duration to 300% approx make it run smoothly and so as not to notice any stopping and starting from the process.
In my evaluation i have also used other technologies to present my work.
I have used recorded footage to show feedback from my audience.
I used microsoft powerpoint for an interesting way to present my work through slideshare.net .
And also i have used prezi.com to add creativity to my evaulation withsimple and attractive presentation skills displayed and personalised for a decorative way to present my work.
The use of our camera was very useful in consrtucting our documentary,
