William Shakespeare

The Swan of Avon

Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616, at the age of 52 and was buried in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church two days later.

But his masterpieces still live in the hearts of his esteemers.

National heritage

His earliest plays were comedies and histories such as Henry VI and The Comedy of Errors.

In 1596, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, his second tragedy.

Over the next dozen years he wrote his now best known plays: Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra.

In his final years, Shakespeare turned to the romantic with Cymbeline, A Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest.

Shakeapeare's extant works, including collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship.

Susanna and Judith

Mrs Shakespeare

In 1582, when William was 18, he married 25-years-old Anne Hathaway.

William and Anne raised two daughters: Susanna, who was born in 1583, and Judith (whose twin brother died in boyhood), born in 1585.

Outstanding English poet

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. The son of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, he was probably educated at the King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford, where he learned Latin and a little Greek and read the Roman dramatists.
