Mark Adams - Kindergarten

Elisha McLaughlin - Middle Grades ELA

A Compare and Contrast:

Kindergarten vs. Middle Grades

Rules, Norms, and Procedures...

  • are important!
  • set the tone of the classroom.
  • create a learning-conducive environment.

But as a new teacher, it can be hard to know where to start...

Let us help!

  • Rules and Norms
  • Procedures
  • Student Involvement

Procedures

Specific behaviors that are expected

Procedures explain what norms

look like in practice.

Involve students!

  • Brainstorm what norms look like
  • Give examples
  • Use student input to create a procedure
  • Students become invested!

RULES

Middle Grades

Kindergarten

Statements of what is NOT allowed; health and safety related

Teachers at both levels should...

Kindergarten students need lots of procedures throughout their school day. They are learning so much by practicing everyday skills we take for granted!

1. Establish early

2. Provide reminders

3. Student input!

4. Keep rules to a minimum

  • Wait until the teacher dismisses you to leave at the end of class
  • Keep the classroom neat by returning materials to where you found them.
  • Respect the school equipment by carefully returning it at the end of class.

Middle Grades

Kindergarten

Students should know where to store their belongings and how to prepare themselves for the next activity.

- Daily line leader

-Use line up stickers

Students can tidy up when a tidy up song is played.

Daily assignment of class jobs with specific roles.

Students could follow hand washing chart procedures

It can be easy to mix up

norms and procedures.

Examples:

  • No running during a fire drill
  • No fighting or pushing

Examples:

  • We are kind to others
  • We play and learn safely
  • We do not run inside
  • We use nice voices

Norms describe WHAT.

Ex: Be prepared for class.

Procedures describe HOW.
