Mark Adams - Kindergarten
Elisha McLaughlin - Middle Grades ELA
A Compare and Contrast:
Kindergarten vs. Middle Grades
Rules, Norms, and Procedures...
- are important!
- set the tone of the classroom.
- create a learning-conducive environment.
But as a new teacher, it can be hard to know where to start...
Let us help!
- Rules and Norms
- Procedures
- Student Involvement
Specific behaviors that are expected

Involve students!
- Brainstorm what norms look like
- Give examples
- Use student input to create a procedure
- Students become invested!
Statements of what is NOT allowed; health and safety related
Teachers at both levels should...
Kindergarten students need lots of procedures throughout their school day. They are learning so much by practicing everyday skills we take for granted!
1. Establish early
2. Provide reminders
3. Student input!
4. Keep rules to a minimum
