MY CHOSEN

TARGET

AUDIENCE

Female

15-19

Indie

Outgoing

Adventurous

Fashion Concious

- listens to independent music, watches independntly made films, dresses in their own independent, unique way. More individual than those who are 'mainstream' (listen to chart music, follow the latest trends etc.

Nowadays, ‘indie’s’ are a specific culture group who are known for being quite ‘natural,’ wearing ‘vintage’ or old style clothing. Girls especially have quite natural looking hair, aren’t too made up and look quite simplistic. The music they listen too isn’t as independent but is still of a specific style – quite unique and different.

MY TARGET AUDIENCE

My target audience are fashion conscious, always looking for ‘new’ things, and are very outgoing. They are very free spirited, and do what they want. They are also known for being very creative, often having an interest in art, music, textiles, photography etc. as they enjoy being able to express themselves.

The stereotypical ‘look’ is that they wear vintage clothing, red lipstick, have messy style hair and are overall very ‘natural.’

They tend to read other music magazines that have a broader range of music genres, also watching TV regularly, going to the cinema, downloading and buying music in different formats etc. Therefore I wanted to create a form of media specifically targeted at them.

ATTRACTING THE TARGET AUDIENCE

The masthead will appeal to the target audience as the colour is red - one of the favourite colours, which also links to the models red lipstick - a stereotypical indie feature. The magazine is also called IN-D, which is essentially 'Indie' but in a more modern way.

The background of the front cover is very plain, and instead of being white, is a natural colour. Therefore this will appeal to the target audience, as they are generally very natural.

The artist on the front cover will appeal to the target audience as they appear to be someone they could relate to. For example, they're wearing a 'vintage' jumper, something that is very stereotypical of the target audience. I have the stereotypes by having her quite made up, but still having the red lipstick, another feature of an indie. Her hair is also very natural, slightly messy, gripped back at each side - a style which the target audience are likely to use.

The main coverline 'Amber' will appeal to the target audience as it is simple, the artists name. It is also simple, rather than being something strange such as 'Lady Gaga.' Therefore the audience will believe the artist is simple and natural, just like them. It is also in the colour red, one of the target audience's favourite colours.

The coverlines will attract and appeal the target audience as they are all to do with music to do with stereotypically indie bands and artists. The fact it is 'new music' will appeal to them, as they are known for being individual with their music, therefore finding new individual artists will interest them.

The images used on the contents page all relate to my target audience. For example, the main image is of the artist from the cover, in a more natural environment - something my target audience like. The other images are of artists at concerts, all of which are of an indie genre, therefore will appeal to them.

The contact box will attract the target audience as this gives them a chance to get involced and be creative, something they enjoy doing. It also lets them have their say or give their ideas about the magazine.

The mode of address used in some of the coverlines 'Your Gig Highlights' and 'We Tell You...' will appeal to the target audience as it is as if the magazine is directly addressing them, and therefore these articles are specifically for them.

The main colour used on the contents page is red, which will appeal to the target audience as it stand out, but will also is known to be a stereotypical indie favourite colour. It also links back to the red lipstick - another indie stereotypical feature.

The article itself is an interview, with questions and answers. This will appeal to the target audience as they are finding out new things about this artist, and it may answer some questions they wanted to know.

The main colours on the double page spread are greens and black. Green is seen to be a natural colour that links to the environment, but also links to the photo on the opposing page. Indie's are into nature and natural things, therefore they will be drawn to the 'natural feel' of this page.

The title of this page is bold and black and will therefore capture the audiences attention. It is also of varying sizes which make it more appealing to look at. The font is quite unique which will attract the audience's attention, as it is quite creative and fun, as are they.

The image I have used is of the artist in a natural environment - a forest. Therefore it will appeal to the target audience as many of them said they enjoying going to outdoor places, but also is natural.

AUDIENCE RESPONSE

''She looks like someone I can relate to, especially from her clothing. And the colours are eye-catching, I'd instantly be drawn to this magazine.''

''The coverlines are all of features I would be interested in reading. New Year New Music especially, I also like discovering new artists, so to have a whole feature on it is just what I'm after!''

''The article inside really appealed to me from the moment I saw it. The title espeically stood out, and as I'm into graphics, I noticed the use of the font in different sizes. Also I am a very natural person, so the pale greens really appealed to me.''

FEEDBACK

I asked 20 people what they thought of my magazine, using the following questionnaire.

Questions 4 & 5

I have attempted to attract and appeal to the target audience in a number of ways. The main way being through the model, dressing and making her pose accordingly to the target audience. I also took note of the mise-en-scene, and how a lot of the target audience mentioned that they are into nature and natural elements. Therefore I tried to reflect this in my magazine, using a plain, natural coloured background for the cover, and a natural envirionment - forest as the background for the double page spread photos.
