CCCSAA Student Leadership Conference Post-Presentation

By Misha Maggi

My First Time Chairing a

State-Wide Conference

Three Months Before the Conference:

"You can help chair it right? It will be fun!"

What did I do on this trip?

What Will I Now Incorporate into my work in the ASCC because of the trip?

  • Chair all conference committee meetings
  • Create agendas
  • Form a committee
  • Create a conference vision
  • Create tasks for all the members wishing to get involved
  • Create first ever online conference registration and program proposals
  • Create conference program
  • Work with hotel on logistics and meals
  • Check in with committee on tasks
  • Answer state-wide questions
  • Be the point person for all conference set up and issues
  • Be the MC at the conference
  • Get 515 people from across the state together!
  • When outside projects get really hard I need to set at least 1 open office hour per day to be available for students (open door)

  • Have at least one, one on one with each senate member to better connect (quality time=love language)

What Did I Learn?

  • Practice what I preach!
  • Student Senate presentations in Summer Training all spoke about being able to facilitate and not have to take everything on. I learned a lot for my first time CHAIRING versus ADVISING and making sure to check in with team members on their tasks
  • Let it Go
  • I can't be involved and have fun with everyone/my team to the level that I am used to when I'm planning a big event due to incidences coming up all the time
  • No matter how much you plan people will love the conference and people will come up to you and tell you how much they didn't like the conference.
  • Provide context where necessary and realize you can't satisfy everyone

Top 3 Take-Aways

  • Support the Home Front
  • In conference planning, communicate to Student Senate my primary role is to be there for them (felt like people didn't think they could come to me because I was so busy)
  • No Adviors Available, What Now?
  • Clearly communicate and designate one student "lead" per meal and event to ensure all team-members stay together and get to things on time
  • It Takes a Village
  • Ask for help even when I think I can do it myself
  • Connecting with other advisors
  • bring them from impartial to passionate
  • CCCSAA is like Student Senate for Advisors

1 New Initiative I Can Create for the ASCC After Attending this Conference?

  • Hearing a lot from other advisors and students I would like to see the Student Senate address one cause to benefit students for the 2016 semester
