ACT II scene 1:

The king and queen summon Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet’s friends from Wittenberg, to see what is the cause of Hamlet's actions and cheer him up. Polonius enters, bringing the ambassadors that Claudius sent to Norway. Voltimand and Cornelius enter and describe what took place with the old and dying king of Norway. Relieved to have averted a war with Fortinbras’s army, Claudius declares that he will see to this business later. Voltimand and Cornelius leave. Polonius explains how mad in love Hamlet is for Ophelia and he shows the king and queen letters and love poems Hamlet has given to her, and told them of his plan to see if it is true. Polonius then tries to talk with Hamlet, who seems insane, making him determined to arrange the meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia. When Polonius leaves, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern enter, and Hamlet is happy to see them. Hamlet asks why they have come and they say that they wanted to visit him, but Hamlet knows they were sent. Hamlet tells them that he knows everyone thinks he is sad and acting weird. Polonius enters to announce the arrival of the players, who follow him into the room and one of them gives a speech about the fall of Troy. Hamlet is awestruck with the speech and explains that he will write one for himself. When Hamlet is alone, he yells at himself for not having the same passion as the man who gave his speech about people he didn't even know. Hamlet wishes to convey such feelings in his everyday life and emotions. He then decides to deal with Claudius, and make him watch a play that is just like the the murder of Hamlet’s father. Hamlet states that if the king is guilty, he will show some kind of guilt.

Polonius is talking to Reynaldo trying to get him to bring money to his son Laertes. He also wants Reynaldo to become Laertes friend so that Reynaldo can spy on Laertes and see what he has been up to.

Ophilia enters and tells her father Lord Polonius that Hamelt was trying to get at her. Polonius decides to tell the King and Queen that Hamlet's strange behavior is because he loves Ophelia and is grief stricken because Ophelia is not allowed to be with him.
