INVASIVE SPECIES

Private Salesian High School in Wroclaw (POLAND)

The indirect threats of invasive species:

  • Changing food webs: Invasive species can change the food web in an ecosystem by destroying or replacing native food sources. The invasive species may provide little to no food value for wildlife.
  • Decreasing biodiversity: Invasive species can alter the abundance or diversity of species that are important habitat for native wildlife. Aggressive plant species like kudzu can quickly replace a diverse ecosystem with a monoculture of just kudzu.
  • Altering ecosystem conditions: Some invasive species are capable of changing the conditions in an ecosystem, such as changing soil chemistry or the intensity of wildfires

WHAT CAN YOU DO to STOP THE ALIEN SPECIES

  • Learn how to identify invasive species
  • Report sightings of invasive plant species in natural settings
  • Educate yourself and neighbors about this increasing problem
  • Use non-invasive plants in your home landscape
  • Ask you local garden center/nursery to stop selling problematic plants
  • Do not take away any plants and animals to einvironment

Characteristics that make invasive species so

successful in our

environment:

An invasive species is an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native.

Invasive species can harm both the natural resources in an ecosystem as well as threaten human use of these resources. An invasive species can be introduced to a new area via the ballast water of oceangoing ships, intentional and accidental releases of aquaculture species, aquarium specimens or bait, and other means.

  • Lack predators, pathogens, and diseases to keep population numbers in check
  • Use successful dispersal mechanisms attractive to wildlife
  • Fastgrowing
  • Some demonstrate alleleopathy - produce chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants
  • Have longer photosynthetic periods
