Why Europe?

The Importance of Imperialism in Europe.

Imperialism: the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.

Europeans found it much more profitable to invest their money abroad, thus expanding their economy over foreign lands.

Imperialism became broadly popular with the growth of nationalism.

Europeans saw colonies as a symbol of power; Countries competed to acquire them.

Nationalism made the acquiring of colonies important, even on a social level.

Imperialism helped in the dissolving of social class issues caused by industrialization. Both workers and aristocrats could claim the same heritage.

What contributed to changing European views of Asian's and African's in the 19th century?

Europe's technological superiority due to industrialization gave rise to the idea of a racial hierarchy.

Europe was more open to adopting foreign ideas, technologies from other advance societies such as China and India.

Although Europeans held some Asian civilizations in high regard, the idea of natural superiority (Social Darwinism) was popular.

Europeans pitied "lower races," felt they were responsible for educating/civilizing them.
